https://goutrgv.com/news/2022/1/6/mens-basketball-drops-wac-home-opener.aspx Jan. 6, 2022 – RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team dropped the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) home opener to the Grand Canyon University Lopes 84-70 on Thursday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Graduate student Mike Adewunmi led the Vaqueros (5-9, 0-2 WAC) with a season-high 20 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks for his second double-double of the season. Junior Justin Johnson scored 16 points with seven rebounds and four assists. Junior LaQuan Butler scored 10 points with two assists. Graduate student Marek Nelson scored nine points with two steals and one block. Junior Ricky "Doc" Nelson scored seven points with five rebounds and two assists. Gabe McGlothan led the Lopes (12-2, 2-0 WAC) with 18 points and two steals. Holland Woods II scored 17 points with seven assists and two steals. Sean Miller-Moore scored 15 points with five rebounds. Jovan Blacksher Jr. scored 13 points with six assists and two steals. The Vaqueros led 3-2 on a Marek Nelson three in the opening minutes, but the Lopes scored the next eight points to go up 10-3. The Vaqueros responded with a 6-2 run, capped by an Adewunmi layup, to pull within 12-9. The Lopes scored nine of the next 11 points to push their lead to 21-11 before layups by Marek Nelson and Johnson made the score 21-15. The Lopes increased their lead to 32-19, but the Vaqueros responded with a 9-3 run to pull within 35-28 on an Adewunmi layup late in the first half. The Lopes extended their lead to 49-35 early in the second before a pair of Adewunmi free throws and a Johnson three-point play brought the Vaqueros within 49-40, but the Lopes answered with a 14-0 run to go up 63-40. Adewunmi scored 10 points as the Vaqueros outscored the Lopes 21-10 over the next six minutes to pull within 73-61. An Adewunmi three brought the Vaqueros within 76-64 with 3:31 remaining, but that's as close as they got. UTRGV hosts New Mexico State on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Graduate student Taylor Muff led the Vaqueros (5-8, 1-1 WAC) with 15 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Tiffany McGarity hit three three-pointers en route to 11 points. Sophomore Maria Llorente scored nine points with three rebounds and four assists. Freshman KaCee Kyle scored nine points with five rebounds. Tiarra Brown led the Lopes (8-5, 1-1 WAC) with 15 points. Ja'mya Powell-Smith scored 11 points. The Vaqueros opened the game on a 12-2 run, capped by a three, a steal and a Llorente layup. Then, with the score 12-6, a pair of McGarity threes fueled an 11-1 run to put the Vaqueros up 23-7. The Lopes pulled back within single-figures midway through the second quarter at 29-20 and 31-22 before a layup and a jumper by graduate student Iva Belosevic gave the Vaqueros a 35-22 lead. The Vaqueros extended their lead to 41-27 on a Muff layup to start the third quarter. The Lopes followed with a 7-3 run before back-to-back Muff baskets put the Vaqueros up 48-34. The Vaqueros took their largest lead at 62-46 on a McGarity three-pointer with 2:18 remaining.

Junior Justin Johnson led the Vaqueros (5-8, 0-1 WAC) with 22 points, a career-high tying four assists and two steals. Graduate student Marek Nelson scored 19 points with six rebounds and four assists. Graduate student Mike Adewunmi scored 12 points with seven rebounds. Freshman RayQuan Taylor scored nine points with four rebounds. Junior LaQuan Butler finished with eight points. Savion Flagg led the Bearkats (7-8, 2-0 WAC) with 27 points and 17 rebounds. Demarkus Lampley scored 19 points. Jarren Cook finished with 15 points. The Vaqueros jumped out to a 5-2 lead on a Taylor layup and a Nelson three. The Vaqueros led 7-6 on a pair of Nelson free throws, 9-8 on a layup by sophomore Quinton Johnson II, 12-11 on a Nelson three-point play, and 20-18 and 22-21 on Butler layups. The Bearkats used a 16-5 run to go up 37-27 before the Vaqueros scored the final four points of the half to pull within 37-31. Adewunmi opened the second half with two free throws to bring the Vaqueros withing 37-33, but the Bearkats responded with a 19-1 run to go up 56-34. The Bearkats led 84-60 with 2:52 remaining when dunks by Justin Johnson and Adewunmi fueled an 18-3 run to close out the game. UTRGV plays the WAC home opener against Grand Canyon on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at UTRGVTickets.com. GoUTRGV.com RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s basketball team fell 65-50 to the Stephen F. Austin (SFA) Ladyjacks in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) opener on Thursday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. The Vaqueros (4-8, 0-1 WAC) were led by the graduate student Taylor Muff who finished the night with 11 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Freshman KaCee Kyle scored 10 points with three assists. The Ladyjacks (10-3, 1-0 WAC) had three scorers in double-figures as Aiyana Johnson and Stephanie Visscher each scored 18 points. Johnson added eight rebounds, three assists, and two blocks while Visscher grabbed nine rebounds with six assists. Tasharian Robinson chipped in with 10 points and four steals. Muff got the scoring started by knocking down a three-pointer from the top of the key and then it was sophomore Jena’ Williams with the layup after the give-and-go with graduate student Iva Belosevic as the Vaqueros went up 5-0. The Ladyjacks answered with a 19-0 run before a three-pointer from sophomore Tiffany McGarity ended UTRGV’s drought as Stephen F. Austin took the 22-8 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Ladyjacks pushed their lead to 30-10 after a layup by Johnson and a three-pointer from Visscher. The Vaqueros answered with a 6-0 run as Kyle converted on a layup and freshman Maria Llorente hit a couple of free throws and a spinning layup to make it 30-16. The Ladyjacks opened the second with a 9-2 run before Muff knocked down her second layup of the quarter giving SFA the 41-20 lead with 7:23 left in the third quarter. SFA got their largest lead of the night at 46-20 after Johnson converted one of her two free throws before freshman KaCee Kyle knocked down her first three-pointer of the game. Llorente converted on a layup with 4:11 left in the third that kicked off a 10-5 UTRGV run that was capped by another three-pointer by Kyle making it 52-33. The Vaqueros got it to 61-45 in the fourth quarter after a three-pointer from freshman Brooke Jessen and a pair of free throws from Kyle, but the Ladyjacks kept the Vaqueros at bay the rest of the way. The Vaqueros will be back in action on Thursday, January 6, when they travel to Phoenix, Arizona to face the Grand Canyon University Antelopes at 7 p.m. at GCU Arena.

Freshman RayQuan Taylor led the Vaqueros (4-7) with a career-high 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting and six rebounds. Graduate student Marek Nelson scored nine points with four rebounds, a career-high five assists and a career-high tying four steals. Junior LaQuan Butler scored nine points. Graduate student Mike Adewunmi scored nine points. Junior Justin Johnson scored seven points with eight rebounds. Junior Ricky “Doc” Nelson dished out a season-high nine assists. Brison Gresham led the Tigers (2-7) with 18 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks. John Jones scored 15 points with three rebounds and four assists. Justin Hopkins scored 12 points with five rebounds and four assists. The game was tied at 5 in the opening minutes on the power of a Johnson layup and a Doc Nelson three-point play. Then, after three-straight Tigers baskets, Taylor drained a three to bring the Vaqueros to within 11-8. The Tigers pushed their lead to 15-8 when Marek Nelson came up with a steal and a dunk to bring the Vaqueros within five. The Tigers went up 23-13 before sophomore BJ Simmons hit a three to set off a span off the two teams trading baskets that ended with the Tigers up 32-21 at the half. The Vaqueros pull within 37-28 early in the second half on a hook shot by freshman Donte Houston Jr., but the Tigers scored the next seven points to go up 44-28. A pair of Butler three-pointers and a layup and a dunk by Taylor powered a 10-0 run to bring the Vaqueros within 44-38. The Vaqueros were again within six at 48-42 on a Marek Nelson layup and 54-48 on an Adewunmi three, but that’s as close as they got. UTRGV is back in action on Friday at 7 p.m. at UTSA.

Freshman KaCee Kyle led the Vaqueros (4-5) with a career-high 14 points while hitting a career-high four three-pointers to go with two assists and a career-high three steals. Sophomore Sara Bershers scored 11 points with 12 rebounds, two steals and a season-high tying three blocks. Junior Jessica Martino scored eight points with three rebounds. Sophomore Jena’ Williams scored seven points with five assists. Graduate student Taylor Muff scored six points with three rebounds. Alecia Westbrook led the Islanders (4-5) with 11 points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Makinna Serrata scored 11 points with nine rebounds and three assists. Paige Allen scored a team-high 12 points. The Vaqueros jumped out to a 4-2 lead on layups by Williams and Muff. The Islanders scored the next 10 points to go up 12-4 before Kyle hit back-to-back threes to bring the Vaqueros within 12-10. The Islanders pushed their lead to 16-10 early in the second quarter. Muff followed with a layup to spark a 13-0 run to put the Vaqueros up 23-16. The Islanders scored the next six points, but a Bershers three put the Vaqueros up 26-22 at halftime. The Vaqueros extended their lead to 28-22 on a Muff jumper at the start of the third quarter and 32-25 on a Williams layup three minutes later. The Islanders pulled to within 32-30 before Martino scored six points during an 8-2 run to put the Vaqueros up 41-32 at the end of the third quarter. The Vaqueros pushed their lead to double-figures at 44-34 on a Kyle three early in the fourth quarter. The Islanders responded with a 7-2 run before a Bershers jumper put the Vaqueros up 48-41 to cement the Vaqueros’ advantage. The Vaqueros open the UTRGV South Padre Island Classic on Friday at 6 p.m. against UTSA. Grand Canyon faces Liberty at 3 p.m. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at UTRGVTickets.com.
