Junior Justin Johnson led the Vaqueros (6-15, 1-8 WAC) with 23 points and eight rebounds. Junior Ricky “Doc” Nelson scored nine points with a career-high tying 10 assists. Freshman RayQuan Taylor scored nine points with seven rebounds. Graduate student Jeff Otchere scored a season-high nine points with two blocks. Freddy Hicks led the Texans (10-13, 5-5 WAC) with 29 points, four rebounds and two steals. Montre Gipson scored 13 points with five rebounds and seven assists. Shamir Bogues scored 13 points, five rebounds, six assists and two steals. Tahj Small finished with 10 points with four rebounds. Taylor connected on a dunk and Johnson nailed a three as the Vaqueros took an early 5-4 lead. The Texans went on a 17-5 run to go up 21-10 midway through the half. The Vaqueros scored five of the next seven points, pulling within 23-15 on an Otchere layup. The Texans pushed their lead to 37-23 before a Nelson three made the score 37-26 with about a minute left in the half. The Texans hit a pair of baskets right before the buzzer, though, to take a 42-26 lead into the locker room. The Texans extended their lead to 55-35 early in the second half. Adewunmi hit a three and Johnson made a layup to spark an 11-4 run to bring the Vaqueros within 59-46. The Vaqueros were again within 13 on an Otchere dunk that made the score 61-48 and a pair of Otchere free throws that made the score 63-50, but that’s as close as they got. UTRGV hosts Lamar on Wednesday at 7 p.m. for Lew Hill Tribute Night at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at UTRGVTickets.com. GoUTRGV.com ABILENE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s basketball team fell 88-69 to the Abilene Christian University (ACU) Wildcats on Thursday at the Teague Center. The Vaqueros (7-12, 3-4 WAC) were led by sophomore Sara Bershers who scored 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting while grabbing four rebounds and recording two blocks. Junior Jessica Martino tied a career high with 13 points while graduate student Taylor Muff added eight points with five rebounds. The Wildcats (13-7, 5-4 WAC) had four players in double-figure scoring with Madi Miller leading the way with 18 points and seven assists. Jamie Bonnarens scored 16 points with four rebounds while Emma Middleton added 12 points with five rebounds and Bella Earle chipped in with 11 points. The Vaqueros opened the game with a 10-0 run that was started and capped by a jumper and a layup by Bershers but the Wildcats answered with an 8-0 run of their own. Later in the first quarter, sophomore Tiffany McGarity knocked down a three-pointer to give UTRGV the 17-14 lead. Bershers hit another three-pointer to make it 20-18 but the Wildcats got a layup from Miller and a jumper from Middleton to take the 22-20 lead to close out the quarter. In the second, ACU extended their lead to 27-20 after a three-pointer from Bonnarens and a layup from Middleton. After a layup from freshman Brooke Jessen and a layup from Muff, the Wildcats went on a 14-0 run to grab the 46-29 lead with 1:32 left in the half. In the second half, the Wildcats scored seven of the first 10 points as they extended their lead to 57-38 with 6:14 in the third quarter. Graduate student Iva Belosevic converted a layup, but the Wildcats answered with a 10-2 run to close out the third making it 69-44. Martino did her best to keep the Vaqueros in the game scoring 10 of her 13 points in the final quarter but the Wildcats kept the Vaqueros at bay the rest of the way. The Vaqueros will be back in action on Saturday when they visit the Tarleton Texans at 2 p.m. at Wisdom Gym.

Junior Justin Johnson led the Vaqueros (6-14, 1-7 WAC) with 22 points, nine rebounds, and a career-high six assists. Sophomore Quinton Johnson II scored a season-high 19 points. Graduate student Marek Nelson scored 15 points with four rebounds and two blocks. Freshman RayQuan Taylor scored 14 points with six rebounds and three blocks. Graduate student Mike Adewunmi scored seven points with four rebounds. Graduate student Xavier Johnson scored six points with three rebounds, three assists and one block. Mahki Morris led the Wildcats (13-7, 4-5 WAC) with 16 points, three rebounds and three assists. Coryon Mason scored 16 points with three steals. Damien Daniels scored 15 points with three rebounds, four assists and three steals. Cameron Steele scored 12 points. Airion Simmons scored 11 points with eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. The Vaqueros trailed 33-20 with 5:07 remaining in the first half. That’s when an Xavier Johnson 3 sparked a 14-6 run to bring the Vaqueros within 39-34 at halftime. The Wildcats extended their lead to nine early in the second half. That’s when a Quinton Johnson 3, a Nelson dunk and a Justin Johnson layup brought the Vaqueros to within 52-50. One basket later, Quinton Johnson nailed a 3 to cut the deficit to 54-53. Then, down 56-53, Justin Johnson hit a jumper and four free throws to give the Vaqueros a 59-56 lead with 8:36 remaining. Ultimately, from the time the Vaqueros were down 52-43, the Vaqueros went on a 24-8 run to take a 67-60 lead at the 6:07 mark. The Wildcats closed to within 67-64 before Justin Johnson scored nine points as part of a 14-5 run to give the Vaqueros their largest lead at 81-69 with 1:59 remaining. Down the stretch, however, the Wildcats went 4-5 from the field and 7-10 from the line to go on an 18-4 run, regaining the lead on a Simmons three with nine seconds remaining. Down 68-64, Graduate student Taylor Muff made a jumper, sophomore Maria Llorente hit a free throw, and the Muff made another jumper to give the Vaqueros (7-10, 3-2 WAC) the lead. The Vaqueros extended their lead to 73-68 on free throws. The Trailblazers (6-12, 2-5 WAC) had the ball with less than 17 seconds left when graduate student Iva Belosevic stole the ball and raced down the court for a layup to put the game on ice. Muff posted her third double-double to lead the Vaqueros, scoring 18 points with a career-high 13 rebounds, two assists, one steal and a career-high two blocks. Belosevic scored 16 points with six rebounds, a career-high three steals and a career-high tying two blocks. Freshman KaCee Kyle scored 14 points on a career-high tying four 3-pointers with a career-high six rebounds, a career-high tying four assists and one steal. Sophomore Tiffany McGarity scored seven points with a career-high nine rebounds, a career-high four assists and a career-high tying three steals. Breaunna Gillen led the Trailblazers (6-12, 2-5 WAC) with 15 points and eight assists. Macie Warren scored 14 points. Emily Isaacson scored 12 points. Shanaijah Davison finished with nine points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. Muff opened the game with a 3-pointer and Belosevic got in front of the defense to take a long pass for a layup to give the Vaqueros a quick 5-0 lead. Then, with the score 5-4, a Belosevic 3-point play sparked a 7-2 run to put the Vaqueros up 12-6. The Trailblazers pulled to within one four times, including at 19-18. Muff answered with a jumper as the Vaqueros went on a 10-2 run to go up 29-20 two minutes into the second quarter. Then, with the score 29-25, Muff hit a jumper and a layup to put the Vaqueros up 33-25 before the Trailblazers closed the half on a 6-0 run. Belosevic opened the third quarter with a layup to put the Vaqueros up 35-31. The Trailblazers followed with an 8-0 run to take their first lead. The Vaqueros pulled within 46-45 on a pair of McGarity free throws. The Trailblazers scored the next five points before a Kyle 3-pointer made the score 51-48 at the end of the quarter. Kyle opened the fourth with a layup and a 3-pointer, capping a personal 8-0 run with the Vaqueros up 53-51. Freshman Arianna Sturdivant twice gave the Vaqueros the lead with 3-pointers, first at 56-53 then against at 59-56. The Trailblazers, however, scored the next eight points to regain the lead, going up 64-59. A Kyle 3-pointer brought the Vaqueros within two and graduate student Burcu Soysal made a layup again making it a two-point game at 66-64. Graduate student Xavier Johnson led the Vaqueros (6-12, 1-5 WAC) with a season-high 21 points, making a season-high five 3-pointers and turning in a 4-for-4 night at the free throw line. Graduate student Mike Adewunmi scored 11 points with six rebounds. Junior Justin Johnson finished with 10 points. Graduate student Marek Nelson tallied a career-high four blocks. Fardaws Aimaq led the Wolverines (12-6, 3-3 WAC) with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Tim Fuller scored 13 points with nine rebounds and two blocks. Le'Tre Darthard also finished with 13 points. Connor Harding scored 12 points with five rebounds and two blocks. Xavier Johnson sparked a hot start for the Vaqueros, knocking down three 3-pointers in the first five minutes to open a 13-2 lead. He scored 13 first-half points to aid a 30-29 advantage for the Vaqueros at halftime. The Wolverines went on an 8-0 run to take their first lead at 29-27 with one minute to play, but a big 3-pointer from Adewunmi put UTRGV back on top. UTRGV scored on over 40 percent of its first-half possessions, but up 32-31 early in the second half, the Wolverines went on an 11-0 run to regain the lead. Xavier Johnson hit two pairs of free throws to bring the Vaqueros within 41-36 before the Wolverines went on a 10-2 run to push their lead into double digits. The Vaqueros pulled back to within six twice, including 55-49 on a Xavier Johnson 3 with 5:36 remaining and 62-56 on a three-point play by junior Ricky "Doc" Nelson at the 1:29 mark. Graduate student Taylor Muff scored led the Vaqueros (6-9, 2-1 WAC) with 16 points. Freshman KaCee Kyle scored 11 points. Sophomore Sara Bershers scored 10 points. Graduate student Iva Belosevic scored six points. Sophomore Tiffany McGarity scored five points. Sophomore Maria Llorente and junior Jessica Martino scored four points each. Freshman Brooke Jessen scored two points. Down 2-1 in the opening seconds, Kyle and Muff hit three-pointers to spark an 18-0 run to put the Vaqueros up 19-2. The Vaqueros took their largest lead at 26-6 on a Kyle free throw with 6:26 remaining in the second quarter. GoUTRGV.com AUSTIN – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s basketball team fell 93-58 in a non-conference matchup against the No. 9 Texas Longhorns on Sunday at the Frank Erwin Center. The Vaqueros (5-9, 1-1 WAC) had a pair in double-figure scoring as graduate student Taylor Muff led the way with 17 points with four rebounds and three steals. Sophomore Maria Llorente added 10 points with three assists. The Longhorns (11-2, 1-1 BIG 12) had four in double-figures as Aliyah Matharu led all scorers with 18 points. Joanne Allen-Taylor and Lauren Ebo added 13 points each while Latasha Lattimore chipped in with 10 points. Llorente got the scoring started for the Vaqueros as she scored the team’s first four points with a couple of free throws and a fast break layup, but the Longhorns got back-to-back buckets to go up 11-4 with 5:47 left in the first quarter. After a layup from graduate student Iva Belosevic, the Longhorns put together a 7-0 run to go up 18-6 but the Vaqueros got a three-pointer from freshman KaCee Kyle and a layup from Llorente to cut the Longhorns lead to 24-14 at the end of the first. In the second quarter, the Longhorns pushed their lead to 33-16 after a jumper from Shay Holle. Sophomore Sara Bershers put together a 6-0 run of her own as she converted a three-point play and knocked down a three-pointer to get within 28-25 but the Longhorns closed out the half on a 10-2 run taking the 48-27 lead into halftime. In the third quarter, a three-pointer from Rori Harmon pushed the Longhorn’s lead to 60-32. Later, Muff knocked down one of her five three-pointers to get the Vaqueros within 60-38 before the Longhorns took their largest lead of the quarter at 78-45 on a layup from Latasha Lattimore. The Longhorns kept the scoring going early in the fourth quarter as Allen-Taylor knocked down a jumper to make it 80-46 to put the game out of reach. The Vaqueros will be back in action on Thursday, January 13, when they hit the road to face the Chicago State Cougars at 6 p.m. at the Jones Convocation Center.

Graduate student Xavier Johnson led the Vaqueros (5-10, 0-3 WAC) with a season-high tying 20 points on a season-high four three-pointers. Graduate student Mike Adewunmi scored 11 points with five rebounds. Sophomore BJ Simmons scored 11 points while hitting a career-high tying trio of three-pointers. Junior Justin Johnson finished with 11 points. Sophomore Quinton Johnson II scored a season-high nine points with a season-high eight rebounds and a season-high three assists. Teddy Allen led the Aggies (13-2, 3-0 WAC) with 19 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. Will McNair Jr. scored 17 points with six rebounds. Sir’Jabari Rice scored 14 points with seven rebounds and four assists. Johnny McCants scored 13 points with seven rebounds and three blocks. Mike Peake finished with 10 points and two blocks. Adewunmi opened the game with a three-pointer before the Aggies scored nine-straight points to take the lead. The Vaqueros responded with a 10-3 run, capped by a three-pointer and a three-point play by Xavier Johnson, to take a 13-12 lead. The Vaqueros led 16-15 on a Simmons three when the Aggies went on an 8-0 run to go up 23-16. Simmons answered with a three and then Xavier Johnson hit back-to-back threes to put the Vaqueros up 25-23. The Vaqueros led 28-26 on another Xavier Johnson three before the Aggies went on a 9-2 run to go up 35-30. The Vaqueros tied the game at 35 on an Adewunmi layup, but the Aggies closed the half on a 9-2 run to go up 44-37. Adewunmi opened the second half with a layup before the Aggies went on a 9-2 run to take a 53-41 lead. The Vaqueros pulled within 53-46 on a Quinton Johnson three and 58-51 on a Quinton Johnson three-point play with 13:26 remaining. The Aggies pushed their lead to 69-55 six minutes later before a layup and a three by Simmons helped the Vaqueros score six-straight points to make it an eight-point game. The Vaqueros were again within eight at 71-63 on a pair of Justin Johnson free throws with 5:55 left, but that’s as close as they got. UTRGV visits Stephen F. Austin on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Fans can watch in the United States on ESPN+ or internationally on the WAC Digital Network.
