GoUTRGV.com RIO GRANDE VALLEY – Junior Brandon Pimentel hit a pair of three-run home runs to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team to a 23-3 victory over the George Washington Colonials on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium, completing the three-game sweep in front of a crowd of 946. After drawing 2,418 fans on Friday, the largest crowd since prior to 2008, and 1,189 fans on Saturday, UTRGV finishes the weekend with a three-game attendance of 4,553, an average of 1,518 per game, and the best since prior to 2008. This is the third-straight season in which attendance was not limited that UTRGV has drawn more than 4,000 fans for their first three home games. UTRGV drew 4,298 fans (1,433 per game) for games against Kansas State in 2020 and 4,142 fans (1,380 per game) for games against Oklahoma State in 2019. This is UTRGV’s highest scoring output since scoring 23 runs against Louisiana Tech on March 7, 2010. Pimentel drove-in a career-high six RBI, the most for a player in program history since March 5, 2010, when Vinnie Mejia drove-in six runs against Louisiana Tech. Mejia hit one three-run home run in that game. This is the program’s third six-RBI performance since 2008. Jordan Rutenbar drove-in six runs at Northern Colorado without hitting a home run on May 3, 2008. In what was his first-career multi-home run game, Pimentel finished with a career-high three hits, going 3-for-4, and a career-high three runs scored. Pimentel’s first home run went out to right field and gave the Vaqueros (3-0) a 3-1 lead in the first against Justin Solt (0-1). His second home run went out to left field and put the Vaqueros up 8-1 in the fourth. The Colonials (0-3) pulled to within 8-2 in the fifth, but the Vaqueros scored two in the bottom of the inning on a single by graduate student DeAndre’ Shelton, two in the sixth on a bases loaded walk by sophomore Alex Kelch and a Shelton single, and five in the seventh on a three-run double by junior Chris Mondesi and a two-run home by sophomore PSJA alum Jacob Sanchez. Mondesi’s double came on the first pitch he has seen this season while Sanchez’s home run was the first of his career. The Vaqueros added six mor runs in the eighth on a Mondesi bases loaded walk, a Sanchez two-run double, and a pinch-hit three-run home run by junior Raul Ortega. The last two hits were Sanchez’s first-career double and Ortega’s first-career home run, coming in his first at-bat as a Vaquero. Sanchez posted his first-career multi-hit game, going 2-for-2 with a career-high four RBI and a career-high two runs scored. Graduate student Freddy Rojas Jr. finished with his second-career three-hit game, going 3-for-4 with a double, two walks and a career-high three runs scored. This is also the second time Rojas has reached five times in a game after doubling twice and walking three times at Dallas Baptist on March 27, 2021. Shelton finished 2-for-3 with a career-high three walks, a career-high three RBI and one run scored. It was his third-career multi-hit game. Kelch recorded the first two hits of his career, going 2-for-3 with a double, one walk, two RBI and one run scored. Graduate student Brett Cain finished this game 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. It was Cain’s second-straight multi-hit game after recording one last season. Junior J.C. Ariza (1-0) started on the mound for the Vaqueros, striking out three while allowing one run on three hits without a walk in 4.0 innings. After graduate student Chase Bridges allowed one run in two innings of relief, junior Diego Escobedo, senior Ricky Gerik Jr., each pitched one scoreless inning of relief. Junior Alex Verdugo pitched the final inning, allowing one run. UTRGV is back in action on Friday at 2 p.m. against Texas Southern at the University of Houston.

Sophomore Tiffany McGarity scored led the Vaqueros (10-17, 6-9 WAC) with a season-high 14 points and a career-high tying three steals. Graduate student Taylor Muff scored 10 points with six rebounds. Damaya Telemaque led the Bearkats (13-13, 8-7 WAC) with 23 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals. Madelyn Batista scored 13 points with six rebounds. Kaylee Jefferson scored 10 points with four steals. The Vaqueros trailed 6-4 in the opening minutes before a Muff jumper sparked a 12-0 run to make the score 16-6. The Bearkats scored the next four points before a layup by sophomore Sara Bershers and a Muff buzzer-beater gave the Vaqueros a 20-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Bearkats opened the second quarter on a 14-4 run to pull within 24-23. Freshman KaCee Kyle pushed back by converting a 3-point play and Bershers followed with a jumper before the Bearkats closed the half on a 7-0 run to go up 31-28. The Bearkats score the first six points of the third quarter before McGarity knocked down a 3 and sophomore Jena' Williams made a layup to bring the Vaqueros within 37-33. The Bearkats responded with a 9-2 run, though, to push their lead to 46-35. The Vaqueros pulled to within nine three times, including at 50-41 on a Williams jumper with 1:31 remaining in the quarter, but the Bearkats responded by scoring eight-straight points as part of a 16-3 run to go up 66-44 and push the game out of reach. Graduate student Marek Nelson led the Vaqueros (7-19, 2-12 WAC) with 18 points and five rebounds. Freshman RayQuan Taylor scored 13 points with seven rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Junior Justin Johnson scored 11 points with seven rebounds and four assists. Junior LaQuan Butler scored nine points with four rebounds. Cameron Tyson led the Redhawks (20-6, 11-2 WAC) with 30 points while hitting nine 3-pointers and recording eight rebounds. Darrion Trammell scored 19 points with eight assists and two steals. Kobe Williamson scored 11 points with two steals. Riley Grigsby scored 10 points with six rebounds. The Redhawks scored the first eight points of the game before graduate student Mike Adewunmi came off the bench and on his first touch buried a 3. The Redhawks restored their eight-point lead at 16-8 before Nelson converted a 3-point play to make the score 16-11. Then, with the Vaqueros down 19-11, a Johnson 3-point play and layup brought the Vaqueros within three. The Redhawks responded with an 8-0 run to go up 27-16. The Vaqueros scored five of the next seven points to pull within 29-21 on a pair of Taylor free throws, but the Redhawks scored the next 16 points as part of a 22-3 run to take command of the game. Junior Justin Johnson led the Vaqueros (7-18, 2-11 WAC) with a career-high 38 points, six rebounds and two steals. This was the highest-scoring output by a Vaquero since Nov. 15, 2017, when Nick Dixon dropped 39 points at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Freshman RayQuan Taylor posted his third double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds (career-high tying six offensive). It was Taylor's third-straight game with 12+ rebounds, all of which have come on the road. Taylor is the only freshman in the NCAA with four games of 12+ rebounds on the road this season. Graduate student Marek Nelson scored seven points with four assists and three steals. Graduate student Xavier Johnson also scored seven points. Taran Armstrong led the Lancers (14-11, 4-8 WAC) with 18 points and nine assists. Ty Rowell scored 16 points with five assists. Tre Armstrong scored 16 points with three rebounds. Dan Akin scored 12 points with 17 rebounds. Taylor opened the game with a pair of boards and buckets. His second basket kicked off a 9-0 run to put the Vaqueros up 11-4. The Lancers came back to within one at 11-10 and 16-15 before a Justin Johnson 3-point play and layup put the Vaqueros up 21-16. The Lancers scored the next seven points to regain the lead, going up by as much as three twice, including 32-29. Another Justin Johnson 3-point play and a Nelson dunk, though, sent the game to the locker room tied at 34. The Lancers opened the second half on a 10-0 run to take a 44-34 lead. Justin Johnson made a pair of free throws and Nelson followed with a layup to bring the Vaqueros within six, but the Lancers scored the next six points to push their lead to 50-38. The Vaqueros pulled within 10 twice, including 52-42 with 11:22 remaining, but the Lancers responded with a 7-0 run to push their lead to 17. The Lancers still led by 17 at 71-54 with 4:06 remaining when Taylor made a layup and a dunk, Johnson followed with back-to-back layups and then Taylor hit another layup to bring the Vaqueros within 71-64, but that's as close as they got. Graduate student Taylor Muff led the Vaqueros (10-15, 6-7 WAC) with 22 points while going 4-for-5 from behind the arc with eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Freshman KaCee Kyle scored a career-high 18 points while hitting a trio of 3-pointers with five assists. Sophomore Halie Jones scored nine points with six rebounds. Sophomore Sara Bershers finished with seven points. Ane Olaeta led the Lancers (18-5, 9-3 WAC) with 15 points and eight assists. Sydney Palma scored 14 points with nine assists. Caitlyn Harper scored 14 points with two steals. Britney Thomas scored 13 points with eight rebounds and four assists. Trinity San Antonio scored 12 points. Georgia Dale and Nicole Avila-Ambrosi each finished with 10 points. Muff scored the Vaqueros’ first 13 points, making a layup to tie the game at 2, a 3 to give the Vaqueros a 5-4 lead, a 3 to bring the Vaqueros within 11-8, and a 3 and a jumper to bring the Vaqueros within 14-13. Muff finished with 16 points on 4-of-4 shooting from behind the arc in the first quarter, with her final basket shrinking the deficit to 24-22. Kyle took over the role of unstoppable scorer in the second quarter, scoring 14 points while hitting a trio of 3-pointers. Kyle’s first 3 brought the Vaqueros within 28-25. Her second 3 made the score 34-32. Then, after a 9-0 run by the Lancers, Kyle converted a 3-point play to help the Vaqueros climb to within 43-35. In the closing minutes of the quarter, Kyle made a jumper to make the score 45-39 and then she knocked down a 3-pointer to make the score 49-42. After getting held scoreless in the first half, Bershers scored seven points in the third quarter, opening up the period with a 3-point play to bring the Vaqueros within 51-45. The Vaqueros got as close as four four times, including 63-59 on a Muff jumper at the 4:26 mark. The Lancers, however, closed the quarter by scoring 12 of the final 14 points as part of a 24-6 run to take an 87-65 lead and push the game out of reach. Sophomore Sara Bershers led the Vaqueros (10-14, 6-6 WAC) with 20 points while hitting four 3-pointers to go with five rebounds, a season-high tying four assists and two blocks. Graduate student Taylor Muff scored 17 points. Freshman KaCee Kyle scored a career-high tying 14 points with five rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Halie Jones scored 15 points with a season-high tying eight rebounds, four assists and a career-high five steals. Bree Calhoun led the Redhawks (7-16, 2-10 WAC) with 14 points and five assists. Irene Korolenko scored 13 points. Georgia Kehoe finished with 11 points with five rebounds. After being outscored 31-19 and going 1-for-14 from behind the arc in the first half, the Vaqueros outscored the Redhawks 49-29 while going 9-for-18 from downtown in the second half. Bershers opened the third quarter with a 3 and Muff followed with a jumper. Then, with the Vaqueros down 38-27, Kyle hit back-to-back 3-pointers to bring the Vaqueros within five. The Vaqueros trailed 43-35 when Bershers hit four-straight baskets, including a trio of 3-pointers, to give the Vaqueros their first lead, 46-43, early in the fourth quarter. The Vaqueros and Redhawks traded baskets for a few minutes. Then, with the Redhawks up 55-52, sophomore Tiffany McGarity made a layup to spark a 7-0 run to give the Vaqueros the lead for good. Then, with the score 61-60, Muff banked in a three to put the game on ice. The Redhawks jumped out to an 8-2 lead before Muff hit a pair of free throws and the Vaqueros and Redhawks started trading baskets for the rest of the quarter. Kyle hit a three and Muff had a board and a bucket to start the second quarter, bringing the Vaqueros to within 14-13. After a pair of Redhawks baskets, Muff and Jones hit jumpers to bring the Vaqueros within 18-17. The Redhawks responded by scoring the next nine points as part of a 13-2 run over final 4:22 to take a 31-19 halftime lead. Sophomore Halie Jones scored a season-high 19 points while hitting a season-high five 3-pointers and grabbing six rebounds. Freshman KaCee Kyle posted her first-career double-double with 13 points and a program record-tying 15 assists. Graduate student Iva Belosevic scored 13 points with five rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Jamie Bonnarens led the Wildcats (14-8, 6-5 WAC) with 20 points, four rebounds and two steals. The Wildcats led 7-3 in the opening minutes. That’s when a Jones jumper and 3-pointers by Belosevic and Jones fueled an 11-0 run to give the Vaqueros a 16-7 lead. The Wildcats responded with an 18-0 run to go up 25-16 early in the second quarter. Over the final eight minutes, though, Jones scored eight points, hitting two of the Vaqueros’ four 3-pointers, to power a 22-7 run to give the Vaqueros a 38-32 halftime lead. The Wildcats pulled to within four in the opening seconds of the third quarter before a 3 by sophomore Sara Bershers sparked a 12-3 run to put the Vaqueros up 50-37. The Vaqueros extended their lead to 58-44 late in the quarter on a pair of Kyle free throws. Then, with the score 60-51 early in the fourth, Jones and Muff hit back-to-back 3-pointers as part of an 8-0 run to push the game out of reach. UTRGV held a moment of applause before the game, played a tribute video at halftime, and announced fun facts about Coach Hill throughout the game. After the game, the entire UTRGV team went over to Hill's wife, Renee, and their daughter, Elle, to wish them well. Graduate student Marek Nelson led the Vaqueros (7-15, 2-8 WAC) with a career-high 30 points and a career-high 10 rebounds for his first-career double-double. Junior Justin Johnson posted his second double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Graduate student Xavier Johnson scored a season-high tying 22 points with a season-high seven assists. Graduate student Mike Adewunmi scored 13 points with eight rebounds. Junior Ricky "Doc" Nelson dished out a career-high 14 assists. In total, the Vaqueros had a season-high 24 assists on 32 baskets. C.J. Roberts led the Cardinals (2-20, 0-11 WAC) with 26 points, four assists and four steals. Lincoln Smith scored 18 points with seven rebounds. Kasen Harrison scored 13 points with four assists. Brock McClure scored 11 points with five rebounds. The Cardinals led 9-5 in the opening minutes. That's when Marek Nelson connected on a 3 to spark a 14-4 run that put the Vaqueros up 19-13. The Cardinals pulled within 21-20 midway through the half, but Marek Nelson countered with a layup to start a 10-2 run that gave the Vaqueros a 31-22 lead. The Cardinals closed to within three late in the half before a pair of Justin Johnson free throws gave the Vaqueros a 42-37 lead going into the break. The Cardinals took the lead early in the second half, going up 51-49. Xavier Johnson nailed a pair of deep 3-pointers to fuel a 22-6 run to put the Vaqueros up 71-57. The Vaqueros led by as much as 16, including at 86-72 on a Marek Nelson layup with 2:18 remaining.
