UTRGV Baseball Earns Series Victory Over New Mexico State

https://goutrgv.com/news/2022/4/17/baseball-earns-series-victory-over-new-mexico-state.aspx April 17, 2022 – LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team beat the New Mexico State Aggies 7-2 in seven innings on Sunday at Presley Askew Field to earn a series victory, taking two out of three. The Vaqueros (20-15) broke the game open with six runs in the fourth. With runners at the corners and nobody out, graduate student Cameron Blake singled through the right side to bring in the first run. Juniors Diego Ramirez and Brandon Pimentel followed with RBI-singles to knock out Cam Blazek (1-3). One out later, a wild pitch brought home Ramirez. Then, after graduate student Brett Cain walked, sophomore PSJA alum Jacob Sanchez hit a two-run triple to cap the inning with the score 6-0. Sanchez finished 2-for-3 while Pimentel went 2-for-4. Junior Jesus Aldaz (4-3) racked up 10 strikeouts while allowing five singles and one walk in a career-high tying 6.0 innings for the win. After recording a 1-2-3 first inning, Aldaz allowed a leadoff single in the second. He then retired the next seven batters. Gunner Antillon hit a one-out single in the fourth, stole second and made it to third on an error, but Aldaz responded with back-to-back strikeouts as he retired the next seven batters. With two outs in the sixth, however, the Aggies (13-20) put two on with two out, setting up RBI-singles by Logan Gallina and Nolan Funke to make the score 6-2. The Vaqueros got one of those runs back in the seventh on an RBI-groundout by graduate student Bryan Sturges. Junior J.C. Ariza pitched a scoreless seventh to close out the game. UTRGV hosts future WAC opponent Incarnate Word on $2 Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at UTRGV Baseball Stadium. General admission tickets and select concession items will be available for $2 or less. GoUTRGV.com LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team fell 11-8 to the New Mexico State Aggies in the series opener on Friday at Presley Askew Field. The Aggies (13-18) got the scoring started in the bottom of the first as Gunner Antillon hit a two-run home run for the 2-0 lead. The Vaqueros (18-15) answered in the top of the third as they loaded the bases for junior Brandon Pimentel who delivered an RBI infield single that scored graduate studuent DeAndre’ Shelton cutting into the Aggies lead 2-1. Junior Bryan Sturges then followed with a two-run single that gave the Vaqueros the 3-2 lead which also knocked out starter Cade Swenson. Graduate student Freddy Rojas Jr. then weclomed reliever Frank Dickson IV with a three-run home run that extended UTRGV’s lead to 6-2. The Aggies tacked on three more in the bottom of the fourth. Logan Gallina drove in Kevin Jimenez with an RBI single. After a walk and a strikeout, Cal Kilgore delivered a two-run double to right field that cut the Vaqueros lead to 6-5. UTRGV got one of those runs back in the top of the fifth as sophomore and PSJA High alum Jacob Sanchez and graduate student Brett Cain delivered two-out hits, which set up junior Diego Ramirez who followed with an RBI single that made it 7-5. In the bottom of the fifth, the Aggies tied the game at seven as the first two batters reached in the inning before Jimenez hit an RBI single that knocked UTRGV starter Kevin Stevens out of the game. Later in the inning, a passed ball allowed Antillon to score tying the game. The Aggies took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single by Antillon and a miscue in the outfield on a single by Jimenez that gave them the 9-7 lead. A throwing error in the top of the eighth allowed graduate student Cameron Blake to come in and scoring cutting into the Aggies lead 9-8 but the Aggiees answered with two more in bottom of the eighth to push their lead back to 11-8 to cap the scoring. Josh Laukkanen (1-0) earned the win after pitching two and a third innings while scattering three hits. Alex Bustamante earned his fourth save of the season after pitching two innings and allowing just an earned run while striking out four. Senior Ricky Gerick Jr. fell to 2-3 on the season aftr pitching two innings and allowing two runs, one of which was earned, on three hits with three strikeouts. The Vaqueros and Aggies will be back on the field tomorrow for the middle game of the series with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.

Junior Brandon Pimentel was one of four Vaqueros (15-11, 5-6 WAC) with multi-hit games, going 4-for-5 with a double and two runs scored. Graduate student Bryan Sturges went 2-for-4 with a double, three RBI and a run scored while nailing a would-be base stealer. Sturges is now 17-for-32 (.531) during an eight-game hitting streak. Graduate student Cameron Blake went 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored. Junior Diego Ramirez also scored twice. Graduate student Brett Cain went 2-for-4. Graduate student Freddy Rojas Jr. finished with two RBI. The Vaqueros jumped on Steven Beard (2-2) right away, as Rojas hit an RBI-single and then during the next at-bat, got caught in a rundown on a stolen base attempt to allow Pimentel to score from third. The Bearkats (16-11, 7-4 WAC) answered against junior Colten Davis (4-1) in the second with a two-run home run by Walker Janek, an RBI-double by Clayton Chadwick, and an RBI-single by Justin Wishkoski to make the score 4-2. Chadwick added another RBI-single in the fourth and then Easton Loyd scored on a wild pitch in the fifth to put the Bearkats up 6-2. The Vaqueros answered with three runs in the top of the sixth, as Sturges hit an RBI-double, Rojas lifted a sacrifice fly, and sophomore PSJA alum Jacob Sanchez hit an RBI-groundout to make the score 6-5. Chadwick came up with a two-run double in the bottom of the inning to make the score 8-5. The Vaqueros got one back in the seventh on a Sturges RBI-single, but the Bearkats score two more with two outs in the eighth on a two-run single by Wishkoski. Lane Lusk pitched 2.0 innings for his fourth save, allowing just a Sturges sacrifice fly in the ninth. Graduate student Bryan Sturges led the Vaqueros (15-10, 5-5 WAC) offensively by going 3-for-5 with a double, three RBI and a run scored. It was Sturges’ third 3-hit game of the season, all of which have come during a 7-game hitting streak. During that span, Sturges is hitting .536 (15-for-28). Graduate student Cameron Blake also drove-in three runs while going 2-for-6 with a double and a run scored. Freshman Vela alum Isaac Lopez posted his first-career multi-hit game, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Sophomore PSJA alum Jacob Sanchez reached base a career-high tying four times, going 2-for-3 with two walks, an RBI and a run scored. Junior Diego Ramirez went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a career-high tying two runs scored. In his first game against his former team, graduate student DeAndre’ Shelton, who played for Sam Houston in 2020, went a career-high tying 2-for-5 with a double and a career-high tying two runs scored. The Vaqueros fell behind 2-0 in the first and then scored in six-straight innings, starting with a Sanchez RBI-single against Cole Wesneski (3-3) in the second. Then, down 3-1 in the third, Sturges hit a two-run single to tie the game. The Vaqueros took the lead in the fourth on a Lopez RBI-single. Blake followed with an RBI-fielder’s choice and then Ramirez hit an RBI-single to make the score 6-3. The Vaqueros extended their lead to 8-3 on an RBI-groundout by graduate student Brett Cain in the fifth and a Sturges RBI-single in the sixth. Blake hit a two-run double in the seventh to put the Vaqueros up 10-4. That made a winner of senior Kevin Stevens (3-2), who struck out two while allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks in 5.0 innings. The Bearkats (15-11, 6-4 WAC) scored twice in the first on a two-run single by Myles Jefferson. Then, with runners on the corners, Luke Repka hit a fly ball to deep center, but Cain tracked it down with a leaping catch near the wall to end the inning. Justin Wishkoski hit an RBI-single with two outs in the second, after which Stevens settled down to retire eight in a row. In the fifth, however, the Bearkats loaded the bases with two outs. Repka hit a chopper up the middle. Lopez came running from the shortstop position and slid to glove the ball on the first base side of second. He then got to his feet and made a perfect throw to first to end the inning. The Bearkats added a run in the sixth on an RBI-groundout by Clayton Chadwick. Senior Ricky Gerik Jr. took over from there, striking out a career-high five in a career-high tying 3.1 innings of scoreless relief for his fourth save. Graduate student Xavier Johnson led the Vaqueros (8-23) with a season-high 27 points. Graduate student Marek Nelson scored 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting with nine rebounds and three steals. Graduate student Mike Adewunmi scored 14 points with eight rebounds and two steals. Taran Armstrong led the Lancers (18-14) with 13 points, six rebounds and five assists. Tre Armstrong scored 13 points. Ty Rowell, Reed Nottage and Chance Hunter all scored 12 points. Juhlawnei Stone finished with 11 points The Vaqueros trailed 72-62 with 4:39 remaining. That’s when sophomore Quinton Johnson II hit a jumper, Marek Nelson knocked down a layup and Adewunmi dunked the ball to bring the Vaqueros within 72-68. Then, after a pair of Taran Armstrong free throws, an Adewunmi layup and a Xavier Johnson 3 made the score 74-73. Tre Armstrong made a 3 of his own before Quinton Johnson knocked down a jumper and Nelson made a layup to tie the game at 77 with 56 seconds left. Taran Armstrong hit a free throw and Nottage made a 3 to put the Lancers up four. Xavier Johnson banked in a 3 to make the score 81-80 with 35 seconds remaining. The Vaqueros got a stop and took the ball down quickly. Adewunmi launched a 3 as time expired but it hit the backboard and the rim before bouncing out. Down 5-0 early, junior Justin Johnson made a pair of free throws and then junior Ricky “Doc” Nelson knocked down a layup, starting a streak of five-straight made shots as the Vaqueros tied the game at 12 on a Marek Nelson jumper. The Lancers responded with an 8-1 run to go up 20-13. Marek Nelson answered with back-to-back jumpers and then Adewunmi made a layup to bring the Vaqueros within 20-19. The Lancers pushed back again, scoring the next seven points to take a 27-19 lead. Xavier Johnson hit a 3 to spark a 6-2 run and bring the Vaqueros within 29-25. The Lancers went up eight with about a minute left, but Quinton Johnson hit a 3 just before time expired to bring the Vaqueros within 37-32. The Lancers pushed their lead to 12 at 50-38 early in the second half. Adewunmi followed with a 3 and then Xavier Johnson made four-straight baskets, including a 3 to cap a 12-3 run and bring the Vaqueros within 53-50. The Lancers pushed their lead back out to eight before a Xavier Johnson 3-point play brought the Vaqueros within 62-57.

Junior Justin Johnson led the Vaqueros (8-21, 3-14 WAC) with 23 points, 10 rebounds and two steals for his third double-double of the season. Graduate student Xavier Johnson scored 15 points with five rebounds and three assists. Graduate student Marek Nelson scored 12 points with five rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Brock McClure led the Cardinals (2-26, 0-17 WAC) with 12 points, six rebounds and two steals. Lincoln Smith scored 11 points with five rebounds. C.J. Roberts finished with 11 points. Jordyn Adams scored 10 points with five rebounds, five assists and two steals. The Vaqueros trailed 54-45 with 8:10 remaining. The Vaqueros scored the next six points to make the score 54-51 on a Xavier Johnson layup. After three Cardinals free throws, a pair of Marek Nelson free throws and a pair of Adewunmi free throughs brought the Vaqueros within 57-55. Then, after the Cardinals went up 60-55, Justin Johnson converted a 3-point play, Marek Nelson came up with a steal and finished with a layup to tie the game, and sophomore Quinton Johnson II stole an inbound pass to set up a go-ahead layup by Xavier Johnson. After a pair of Roberts free throws, junior Ricky "Doc" Nelson made a layup to put the Vaqueros up 64-62. McClure followed with a free throw, but Justin Johnson made a jumper with 14 seconds left a free throw with two seconds left to put the game on ice. The Vaqueros led 2-0 in the opening minutes on free throws by freshman RayQuan Taylor and Justin Johnson. The Cardinals followed with an 11-4 run to go up 11-6. Justin Johnson answered with a pair of free throws and then Taylor made a layup to bring the Vaqueros within one. The Cardinals pushed their lead back to five at 19-14 before a Xavier Johnson 3 started a 9-5 run, capped by a Marek Nelson 3, to bring the Vaqueros within 24-23 at the half. The Cardinals scored the first four points of the second half before a Nelson dunk and a pair of free throws by Doc Nelson brought the Vaqueros back within one. The Cardinals outscored the Vaqueros 16-8 over the next four minutes to take a 44-35 lead. Xavier Johnson responded with a 3 and a jumper to bring the Vaqueros within 44-40. The Cardinals pushed back with a 10-5 run to go up 54-45. UTRGV hosts Stephen F. Austin to close out the regular season on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. GoUTRGV.com STEPHENVILLE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team was defeated by the Tarleton State University Texans 75-62 on Thursday at Wisdom Gym. Junior Justin Johnson paced the Vaqueros (7-21, 2-14 WAC) with 13 points and tallied five defensive rebounds and one steal. Sophomore Quinton Johnson II finished with 12 points and went 2-for-3 from the three-point line. Freshman RayQuan Taylor scored 10 points, recorded a team-high eight rebounds and one block. Graduate students Mike Adewunmi and Marek Nelson each scored eight. Montre Gipson and Freddy Hicks led the Texans (13-15, 8-7 WAC) with 22 and 20 points, respectively. The Texans jumped out to an early lead, but UTRGV got within three off a deep 3-pointer from Justin Johnson. Tarleton responded with an 8-0 run to go on top 16-5. Quinton Johnson ended a nearly four-minute scoring drought with a 3-pointer to spark a 6-0 Vaqueros scoring run to trim the deficit to five. Tarleton’s defense forced another scoring drought to extend its lead to 20-11 before a Marek Nelson free throw got UTRGV back on the board. Taylor recorded a clean-up dunk, showing his prowess on the rim, to keep the deficit in single digits. UTRGV was aggressive getting to the bucket to put Tarleton in foul trouble early. The Vaqueros went 6-for-9 at the charity stripe in the first half. But Tarleton’s defense forced 11 turnovers in the first half, helping it take a 31-18 lead. UTRGV went into the locker room at half trailing 42-22. Adewunmi turned in a strong second half, scoring all eight of his points in the final 20 minutes. He scored four consecutive points off a floater and a highlight-reel dunk to get things started for UTRGV. The Vaqueros went on a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 45-31. The two squads exchanged buckets as UTRGV continued to battle hard to chip away at the lead. Taylor helped the Vaqueros go on another 6-0 run as he nailed a floater through contact after an offensive rebound, then converted the free throw to make it 61-46. Taylor was strong around the rim throughout the contest. Junior LaQuan Butler scored all seven of his points in the second half, too, as he aided a competitive half from UTRGV. After trailing by 22, the Vaqueros were able to claw back to down 11 by keeping Tarleton off the board for two minutes late in the game. Freshman Donte Houston Jr. had an exciting play, slamming down an alley-oop assist from redshirt junior Ricky “Doc” Nelson for a dunk. UTRGV had another solid game from the charity stripe, going 16-of-21 on free throws.
