Senior Lesley Varner II led the Vaqueros (6-11, 2-2 WAC) with 19 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Sean Rhea scored 13 points with eight rebounds. Freshman Quinton Johnson II scored 11 points and four rebounds. Graduate student Jordan Jackson finished with 11 points and two blocks. Junior Javon Levi scored eight points with eight assists. Morgan Means led the Redhawks (10-9, 3-1 WAC) with 22 points. Myles Carter scored 17 points with 11 rebounds. Riley Grigsby scored 15 points with five rebounds. Delante Jones finished with 12 points. Mattia Da Campo scored 11 points with seven rebounds. Terrell Brown scored eight points with six rebounds, nine assists, three blocks and two steals. Varner hit two three-pointers and a jumper to help the Vaqueros jump out to a 17-5 lead. Two minutes later, Jackson hit a pair of free throws and junior Rob McClain Jr. sunk a jumper to make the score 21-10. The Redhawks responded with a 15-2 run, bookended by Carter layups, to take a 25-23 lead. A Varner jumper tied the game, and then after a Carter free throw, Varner hit two free throws of his own to put the Vaqueros up 27-26. The Redhawks followed with a 12-3 run before a three by junior Chris Freeman brought the Vaqueros within 38-33 at halftime. The Vaqueros got as close as three twice early in the second half when a Rhea layup made the score 40-37 and a Rhea dunk made the score 42-39, but the Redhawks scored the next seven points and led by at least eight the rest of the way. UTRGV is back in action on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Utah Valley.

The winner of the quarterfinal matchup will face the winner of No. 3 CSU Bakersfield and No. 6 Grand Canyon on Friday.
https://goutrgv.com/news/2019/2/24/baseball-rallies-for-sweep-of-north-dakota-state.aspx Feb. 24, 2019 – EDINBURG, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team scored four runs in the seventh to come from behind and complete the sweep of North Dakota State University (NDSU) with a 6-4 victory to close out the Al Ogletree Classic to on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium. Down 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh, UTRGV (5-3) loaded the bases against Alec Holcomb (0-1) on two walks and a hit batsman. One out later, junior Christian Sepulveda hit a two-run single. Senior Coleman Grubbs followed with a game-tying single. Sepulveda moved to third on the hit, and then, for the second day in a row against NDSU (1-6), Sepulveda stole home to give UTRGV the lead. Grubbs finished 2-for-5. Sepulveda reached base three times, including two walks. UTRGV added a run in the eighth on a bunt-single by senior Anthony Gomez that scored junior Hunter Lessard from third. That made a winner of sophomore Max Balderrama Jr., who gave up a run on two hits while striking out one in the seventh. Senior Nikki Rowe alum Ryan Jackson struck out three in 1.2 innings for his second save. Jackson now has nine-career saves, tied for the sixth-highest total in program history. UTRGV scored its first run in the third when freshman Vela alum Aaron Galvan doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Gomez sacrifice fly. NDSU got on the board in the second on an RBI-single by Jayse McLean and again in the third on a Jack Simonsen RBI-groundout. Senior McAllen Memorial alum Juan Carreon II took over with two outs in the third and retired the first eight batters he faced and nine of the first 10. With two outs in the sixth, however, Sean Noel doubled to right to put NDSU up 3-1. Noel finished 3-for-4. NDSU added a run in the seventh on an RBI-single by Jake Malec. Neither team led by more than eight points throughout the game as New Mexico State scored 24 points in the third quarter to take the lead for good. Redshirt senior Madison Northcutt paved the way for UTRGV (14-12, 8-5 WAC) with her ninth double-double of the season by scoring a game-high 21 points and grabbing a career-high 15 rebounds. Redshirt sophomore Amara Graham added a career-high 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting. New Mexico State (20-6, 12-1 WAC) got 20 points and seven rebounds from Brooke Salas while Gia Pack scored 17 points with five assists. Monique Mills added 12 points with five steals. UTRGV jumped out to its biggest lead of the night after Graham made a free throw to make it 11-5 with 5:05 left in the first quarter. Junior Megan Johnson converted on a pair of free throws that made it 14-9 in favor of UTRGV with 1:08 left in the quarter. Graham opened up the scoring in the second with a layup as UTRGV extended its lead to 16-11 but a three-pointer from Mills got New Mexico State within 16-14. Later in the second, senior Krisynthia Sampson knocked down a jumper to make it 20-15 UTRGV with 6:50 left in the half. New Mexico State tied the game at 22-22 after Pack converted on a three-point play with 3:44 left in the half but UTRGV closed out the half with four straight points after senior Idil Türk made a layup and senior Jameka Dowell made a pair of free throws giving them the 30-25 lead heading into halftime. New Mexico State opened the third with an 8-2 run to take the 33-32 lead after Salas scored six of those eight points. Later in the third, Northcutt gave UTRGV the 34-33 lead at the 5:49 mark but Mills answered right back with a jumper to give New Mexico State the lead once again. UTRGV answered with a 6-0 run capped by a three-pointer by Graham to give them the 40-35 lead with 3:44 left to play in the quarter but back-to-back three-pointers by New Mexico State erased that lead. There were seven ties and four lead changes throughout the third as New Mexico State took the 49-47 lead into the fourth. UTRGV stayed within range throughout the fourth quarter but couldn’t get closer than 53-51 after a Northcutt layup with 7:29 left to play. UTRGV will be back in action on Thursday, February 28, when it hosts Chicago State University at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.

UTRGV (12-12, 4-4 WAC) shot a season-best 64.7 (11-for-17) percent from downtown, including 72.7 percent (8-for-11) in the second half. This is the first time UTRGV has hit at least 10 three-pointers in back-to-back games since Dec. 29-31, 2016, when UTRGV hit a combined 30 three-pointers against Our Lady of the Lake and Texas A&M-Kingsville. Earlier in the same month, UTRGV hit at least 10 three-pointers in three-straight games against NCAA Division I competition, with 10 at Portland on Dec. 5, 13 against Texas State on Dec. 7, and 12 against North Florida on Dec. 12. This is the first time UTRGV has reached double-figures in three-pointers in back-to-back WAC games and the first time UTRGV has done so in conference play since Jan. 19-21 2012, when UTRGV knocked down a combined 20 three-pointers at Chicago State and NJIT. In this game, junior Jordan Jackson led UTRGV with a career-high 22 points on a career-best 6-of-8 shooting, including a pair of three-pointers, and a career-best 8-of-8 shooting from the line. Sophomore Greg Bowie II went a career-high 5-for-7 from behind the arc for 15 points. Graduate student Tyson Smith scored 13 points while hitting a career-high tying three three-pointers. Junior Lesley Varner II finished with 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting. Sophomore Javon Levi dished out a career-high tying 12 assists for the second game in a row, grabbed a game-high five steals, scored eight points, and had four rebounds. Senior Ndene Gueye grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds while dishing out a career-high three assists. Brandon McKissic led Kansas City (8-15, 3-5 WAC) with 13 points. Danny Dixon finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. UTRGV trailed by as much as five and was down 40-36 early in the second half. Jackson, Smith and Bowie responded with three-pointers to spark a 13-2 run that saw UTRGV go up 49-42. Then, after Kansas City pulled within four midway through the half, Jackson hit four free throws and Bowie nailed three threes to power a 13-2 run to give UTRGV a 64-49 lead. UTRGV led by as much as 18, going up 71-53 on a Varner three-point play with 4:11 remaining. Kansas City led 5-2 in the opening minutes, but a Smith four-point play capped an 8-1 run to put UTRGV up 10-6. Kansas City scored nine of the next 11 points to take its first lead at 15-12, but threes by Varner and Bowie helped UTRGV regain the lead. UTRGV hit seven of its first eight shots, including each of its first three three-point attempts. UTRGV led 20-17 after nine minutes before three-straight baskets put Kansas City up four. UTRGV scored the next seven points, capped by a Jackson alley-oop to go up 27-24 before Kansas City went on a 9-1 run to take its largest lead of the game at 33-28. UTRGV is back in action on Thursday at 8 p.m. at Grand Canyon.
