What a massive result that was! Beating Wolves 1-0 last weekend wasn't just another three points in the bag and a much needed improved performance, it was also a statement to the other teams battling for the top six that David Moyes' men aren't done fighting just yet. Defeat could have been disastrous for our top-six hopes, due to so many of our rivals having several games in hand on us, but the three points means that our fate is back in our own hands after weeks of underwhelming performances. Moyes tweaked the system, opting for a back-five, and it did the trick with Wolves struggling to find answers in and out possession for much of the 90 minutes. Tomas Soucek's second-half winner was all it needed but in truth, it could've and should've been more on the day. James and Will gave their thoughts on the win in this week's show, with James in particular raving about the improved performance from all of the players against Wolves. It's fair to say the wheels appear to be falling off West Ham's bid to finish in the top four this season. More dropped points at home, this time to 17th-placed Newcastle United, means we're now in serious danger of slipping outside of the European qualification places for the first since the beginning of October. Having played more games than anyone else around us in the table and with 7th-placed Wolves up next, a mixture of tiredness, poor form and a thin squad looks to be a recipe for a huge anti-climax to a season that promised so much only a few months ago. Of course, there are still plenty of points to play for and trust in David Moyes to salvage something with this group of players remains high, but current form doesn't exactly fill many with a great deal of confidence. This week, the lads react to the 1-1 draw with the Magpies as James mostly spends the entire time moaning about the performance, the lack of signings in January, Jarrod Bowen being assaulted by Dan Burn and many more things. Leicester 2-2 West Ham - REACTION! 😅 | We Are West Ham Podcast
It's fair to say West Ham were somewhat fortunate to have come away with a point from the King Power Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Craig Dawson's 91st minute equaliser - which very clearly came off his arm - ensured the game ended 2-2, after Leicester bounced back from Jarrod Bowen's 10th-minute opener. Issa Diop had a superb game after being drafted in at late notice for the unwell Kurt Zouma, but the rest of the squad weren't at the races. Vladimir Coufal was poor, Aaron Cresswell had an off day, Michail Antonio barely broke a sweat and Tomas Soucek was barely noticeable whatsoever. But we managed to avoid defeat to ensure we kept our position in the Premier League's top four, albeit by a single point and with everyone else having games in hand still to play. West Ham's win over Norwich last week was as routine as they come but, just a few days later, David Moyes' men succumbed to a 3-2 home defeat to decimated Leeds side. Jack Harrison's hat-trick was as surprising as the performance and the result, but in reality, West Ham just couldn't handle Leeds' press on the day. Issa Diop's poor performance and Jarrod Bowen's last-gasp miss were to blame for not being able to strengthen our grip on a top-four spot but, when you put things into perspective, we're still 4th in the Premier League and in a really good position as we edge closer towards the final third of the season. After last weekend's huge win over Chelsea and then Thursday's Europa League defeat to Dinamo Zagreb, West Ham travel to Turf Moor to take on Sean Dyche's struggling Burnley side on Sunday afternoon. As we feared would happen at some point this season, we're currently experiencing a bit of an injury crisis. Angelo Ogbonna, Kurt Zouma, Ben Johnson and Aaron Cresswell are all sidelined, leaving our defence dangerously short of strength in depth. However, our attacking players are still on form, apart from Michail Antonio, so we shouldn't have any issues in that department this weekend. Especially if Jarrod Bowen puts in yet another superb showing.
