UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier was scheduled to face Jon Jones in the main event of UFC 197. But an injury just weeks before the fight forced Cormier to withdraw. Jones would face the late replacement, Ovince Saint Preux, for an interim title. Cormier still attended UFC 197, but acted as a commentator for the new main event. At UFC 256 young Heavyweight contender Ciryl Gane face former champion Junior dos Santos. Gane was dominating the fight when in the second round he landed an elbow that dropped Junior. The fight was stopped and Gane was declared the winner. But dos Santos protested the stoppage believing the strike was to the back of the head. Almost two years later he would call out Gane again for a shot that he considered illegal against Tai Tuivasa. At UFC 208, Dustin Poirier would face Jim Miller in a Lightweight bout that would give him an experience that he would never forget. Poirier says Miller's kicks to the calf was something that he didn't expect and was some of the most painful strikes he'd experience in his career. At UFC 235, Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones defended his title against Anthony Smith. Jones mostly cruised to a victory, but in the fourth round he was nearly disqualified for an illegal knee he threw while Smith was down on the canvas. Smith didn't believe the illegal knee was intentional and decided to continue fighting. If Smith decided to not continue, he could've been awarded the victory and become the new UFC Light Heavyweight champion. But Smith says he didn't want to win in that fashion. At UFC 235, Herb Dean was the referee of a Welterweight bout between Robbie Lawler and Ben Askren. But the anticipated matchup had an early ending due to a controversial stoppage from Dean. Lawler was stuck in a submission attempt from Askren when it appeared he couldn't properly defend himself. But when the fight was stopped Lawler immediately protested the result believing he was fine and wasn't in jeopardy of being submitted.
