"Ole's dilemma" "On the day Manchester City became the first team in more than a decade to defend their Premiership title ,it was left to the team on the other side of town to provide the black comedy on the final day of the season. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must be at his wits end as he watched his highly over-payed, underperforming superstars contrive to capitulate at home to Championship-bound Cardiff City. Just a week after the turgid 1-1 draw at rock-bottom Huddersfield Town ,the Reds managed to send the Old Trafford faithful home for the summer with another woeful display ,which hardly bodes well for the future. Just how he takes on this mammoth task and what support he gets from Ed Woodward and the Glazers remains to be seen but clearly there has to be a massive shake-up throughout the squad . Virtually every position needs strengthening with glaring weaknesses clearly apparent in all departments. Whether promising youngsters are ready to establish themselves and how they will blend with their more experienced colleagues remains to be seen. One things for sure ,he has to get it right and quickly or even this Old Trafford legend will find patience running out and we all know what that will lead to. This unforgettable finale was decided by a dubious refereeing decision when Diogo Dalot was harshly adjudged to have upended Nethaniel Mendez-Laing who got up to blast home the resultant spot kick. Mason Greenwood looked the most likely to bring some joy for the home support but was wide on a number of occasions as was the more experienced Marcus Rashford whose composure in the box continues to let him down. Matters got worse after the break as Mendez-Laing rammed home a second ,again exposing United's frailties at the back. The gleeful Welsh contingent taunted their ex-boss who had ironically started his tenure with a thumping 5-1 triumph in the reverse fixture . In the end ,the introduction of Anthony Martial and captain Antonio Valencia making his final appearance for the club made little difference as Paul Pogba continued his hugely disappointing run of form,and he too may have played his final match at the Theatre of Dreams. "Old fighting spirit see Ole's unbeaten run roll on" "Still unbeaten ,but the 100 per cent start to his tenure in the Old Trafford hot seat is now over . Still Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be grateful his side showed that special fighting spirit to glean a point from what appeared a lost cause . When Chris Wood nodded home a second for Burnley with just nine minutes remaining ,it looked as if a shock first reversal was on the cards. It was night when defensive frailties and an inability to convert presentable openings combined to leave the Reds with a mountain to climb,but finally they responded. A clumsy challenge on substitute Jess Lingard gave Paul Pogba the chance to halve the deficit and the rescue mission was completed when Victor Lindelof pounced to prod home when the brilliant Tom Heaton pushed out an Alexis Sanchez header deep into injury time. In a disappointing performance - by some margin the worst since the Norwegian's arrival - United had huffed and puffed through the opening period with Marcus Rashford missing a glorious one on one with Heaton. Both sides had efforts ruled out as ther goalless first half claim to a close. But suddenly the home side had a fight on their hands when the totally-ineffectual Andres Pereira was robbed of possession allowing Ashley Barnes to convert with ease. Matters worsened as Wood doubled the lead before Ole's army finally got their reward with a late double strike to keep in touch with the top five." "Jose's Pink Panthers are back on track" Two clinical first half finishes by the re-energised Romelu Lukaku lifted the gloom that had descended on Old Trafford since the humbling Spurs defeat. But Jose Mourinho's red -or should that be pink - avengers were left to defend their lead with ten men following the dismissal of Marcus Rashford’s dramatic 11 minute cameo. Having won a penalty when hauled down by Lennon inside the Burnley box -a golden opportunity subsequently squandered by Paul Pogba, the young England striker took exception to an impetuous kick out by the aggressive Phil Bardsley and then appeared to push his head into his opponent's face . Referee John Moss booked the defender but red-carded the United player making him ineligible for the next three matches. The Reds were were then forced to see out the remaining minutes although Lukaku could have at least doubled his tally as his power and pace proved too much for the Clarets to handle. But in the end, it was a greatly relieved manager who was able to take the plaudits from his supporters at the final whistle. Earlier United stormed out of the blocks and should have been ahead with successive efforts from Jesse Lingard just off target. Burnley, off the back of their mid-week Europa League exit, gifted the visitors time and space and were behind to a powerful Lukaku header from a superb cross by the industrious Alexis Sanchez. The Belgian increased the lead a minute before the break when he capitalised on some poor defending to beat the unfortunate Joe Hart. Although Shaun Deitch's side showed more endeavour in the final period, United should have been out of site, with Lukaku through twice - the first opportunity he rounded the keeper only to be bundled over but without reward. He then was thwarted by the hand of Mee, but the referee refused pleas for a second red card . Rashford's loss of control did put his side under late pressure but Mourinho was delighted with the performance and result, while bemoaning the glut of chances that went begging. "Mourinho's future hangs by a thread" "The storm clouds gathering above Old Trafford all week burst open in spectacular style as Manchester United were swept aside by a rampant Spurs. And with his side languishing in 13th position, Jose Mourinho's job is surely on the line after an incomprehensible second half collapse saw his woeful defence concede three times without reply. Its difficult to recall a United back line so mistake ridden and after a bright opening where struggling Romelu Lukaku could have bagged himself a hat trick, the whole side suddenly imploded as the visitors, led superbly by the electrifying Lucas Moura took control. In fairness, United had dominated the early exchanges and could have been ahead in the opening seconds when Fred fired wide. Lukaku round Lloris but fired wide, then tamely fluffed a second opening before finally heading wide when unchallenged . Spurs took nearly 40 minutes to force their way into the game but Moura should have earned his side a penalty following a clumsy challenge by Phil Jones. What followed in two devastating minutes just after the break left United on their knees. Harry Kane looped a superb header beyond David de Gea to open the scoring and Moura added a second as defenders went AWOL. Jose rang the changes but to no avail. Again Sanchez provided little impetus, Fellaini failed to upset the Tottenham rearguard and Lindelof on for the injured Jones was as jittery as he was at Brighton, almost providing Delle Alli with a third. That honour eventually fell to Maura, courtesy of shocking defending by Chris Smalling and the stadium emptied rapidly . Whether the Reds boss remains at the helm for the upcoming trip to Burnley will remain the major talking point over the next few days. " Jose has nowhere to hide - nor do his players !" We've seen it all before, of course, and we fear what's coming next. Prophet of Doom, Jose Mourinho, left bemoaning the lack of signings in the summer transfer window, has already predicted " a difficult season" ahead. But no-one could have foreseen how quickly his demoralising assessment would begin to gather pace. It's hard to recall such a gutless, mistake-riddled performance in recent times. And if the first half was atrocious, the second period was arguably even worse. It was bad enough turning in 45 minutes of woeful defending, combined with a total lack of understanding throughout the side. But what followed after the manager replaced Juan Mata and Pereira with Lingard and Rashford was a shock to everyone. With a commanding 3-1 advantage to defend, Brighton prepared for the inevitable onslaught but must have been as stunned as everyone else to discover it would just never materialise. United had, in fact, started brightly and should have been ahead when Romelu Lukaku found himself in on goal only to drag his shot wide of the post. The Seagulls were quick to respond and a cross into the six-yard area was met by the alert Glenn Murray who avoided his markers to flick the ball over the shoulder of the surprised David de Gea. Worse was to follow as Eric Bailly, having a nightmare afternoon, failed to clear a corner and Shane Duffy pounced on the loose ball to double the lead. Lukaku headed in from a miscued Luke Shaw drive to halve the arrears but hopes of a comeback were quickly dashed when the struggling Fred failed to control De Gea's clearance and Pascall Gross burst into the penalty area and appeared to be going nowhere when the clumsy Bailly needlessly brought him down. The same player converted the spot kick via De Gea's legs to put distance between themselves and their so-called illustrious opponents. Another famous United fightback on the way? Not this time, as Ed Woodward, like the rest of us, sat in stony silence as the Reds ambled their way through the final 45 minutes as if it was they that held the two-goal advantage. Paul Pogba's last-minute penalty for a foul on the ineffective Fellaini did nothing to lift the clouds of gloom now descending on a beleaguered manager and his stuttering squad. Next up Tottenham with two opening wins and a real test of Mourinho's inspirational skills as the vultures circle above the Theatre of Dreams. “Cheerio Michael - and one or two others" "Having accomplished his target of finishing second to runaway champions Manchester City,it looked inevitable that Jose Mourinho's much-changed side would end the Premiership campaign on a low key. And that's exactly how it turned out. On a day when club captain Michael Carrick bowed out after a magnificent career ,- justifiably earning a standing ovation in the final minutes- there will be one or two others anxiously awaiting news of their futures -Matteo Darmian, Daley Blind and, almost certainly, Luke Shaw amongst them. None of the above will feature in next Saturday's Cup Final and will learn their fate shortly afterwards . In a classic end -of-season encounter, a Marcus Rashford tap-in clinched all three points to leave United on 81 - still 19 behind the record-breaking Blues. The superb long ball over the Watford defence was delivered with pin- point accuracy by Carrick to the feet of Juan Mata who squared to the young England striker who couldn't miss. But any thoughts of a last day goal bonanza similar to those taking place at Anfield and Wembley were quickly abandoned as a lethargic performance, similar to a number of others in recent weeks, left most of the crowd feeling short-changed as the curtain came down on a campaign that promised so much but in the end delivered so little. Indeed it needed a couple of smart saves from Sergio Romero to keep the Hornets at bay. So its Chelsea standing in the way of a second F A Cup win in three seasons and a fervent hope that Lukaku's ankle injury will not force the giant Belgian to sit out the big day at the Venue of Legends." "Reds ease to a comfortable win" First-half goals by Romelu Lukaku - his hundredth Premiership strike - and the impressive Alexis Sanchez saw United through to a comfortable victory ahead of next weekend's head on collision with bitter rivals City. We know now that following Everton's feeble submission to the Blues at Goodison Park, victory for the runaway leaders in Saturday evening's Etihad Derby will see Guardiola's men lift the title in record time on their own patch. Mourinho will know exactly what he needs from his side so expect him down at Queen's Road bus depot trying to acquire as many spare vehicles that they have available! An aggressive opening against a Swansea team improving of late ensure the Reds take an early lead when Lingard fed Sanchez in the box and the Chilean slid the ball across to Lukaku to finish courtesy of a slight deflection taking the ball high into the net. The home side continued to dominate and the chances came and went with Lingard finishing poorly on more than one occasion. The Swans offered nothing up front as were in constant retreat as Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic pressed forward at every opportunity. A second goal duly arrived before the interval as Sanchez - looking suspiciously offside - fastened on to a fine through ball by Lingard to drive home only his second goal for his new club. The second period started with Sanchez and Mata missing presentable openings before the Welsh visitors suddenly sprang to life. Substitute Tammy Abraham forced two fine saves from the under-worked David De Gea - the first a superb effort from ten yards out as United failed to kill the game off and looked nervous for a brief spell. But normal service was soon restored as Mourinho rang the changes bringing on Marcus Rashford and the fit-again Ander Herrera in an attempt force the issue. But in the end, they had to settle for a two-goal triumph and a return to the second spot ahead of Liverpool who clash with City in the Champions League on Wednesday night. Meanwhile for the Old Trafford backroom staff its seven days of meticulous preparation for the white-hot atmosphere they will invariably face in the Eastlands cauldron " Commentary by Lew Fink

"Matic the main man" Nemanja Matic became goal-taker as well as goal-maker to ensure Manchester United's somewhat stuttering passage through to next month's semi-final at Wembley. But equally important to this latest below-par performance by Mourinho's under-performers was the contribution of Sergio Romero who twice kept out the Brighton battlers left to face the long journey back south knowing they were more than a tad unlucky on the night. The early exchanges saw the home side press forward with little conviction and only Juan Mata with a close-range effort blocked and Chris Smalling who clipped the upright from a corner causing the visitors any concern. Indeed Brighton could have taken a shock lead but Romero was alert to push away a Lewis Dunk header from a corner having found acres of space in the box. But with the half looking to certain to end goalless, up popped Romelu Lukaku to head home a delightful Matic cross at the far post. Any thoughts that the second period would bring a more positive approach to command proceedings and kill off the game were quickly dispelled as the south coast side took control. Romero was forced to save brilliantly from Jurgen Locadia and the same player headed over as it looked like another nervy finale was in sight. Fortunately, the game was finally settled when an Ashley Young free-kick was met by a firm downward header from Matic to see the Reds over the line with just seven minutes remaining. Even Mourinho had to concede his side hadn't performed up to standard and was scathing in his condemnation of certain players whose form has dropped markedly in the last few weeks. But the season remains alive at least for another month after the crushing setback against Sevilla earlier in the week. Commentary by Lew Fink
