But Jose Mourinho's red -or should that be pink - avengers were left to defend their lead with ten men following the dismissal of Marcus Rashford’s dramatic 11 minute cameo. Having won a penalty when hauled down by Lennon inside the Burnley box -a golden opportunity subsequently squandered by Paul Pogba, the young England striker took exception to an impetuous kick out by the aggressive Phil Bardsley and then appeared to push his head into his opponent's face . Referee John Moss booked the defender but red-carded the United player making him ineligible for the next three matches. The Reds were were then forced to see out the remaining minutes although Lukaku could have at least doubled his tally as his power and pace proved too much for the Clarets to handle. But in the end, it was a greatly relieved manager who was able to take the plaudits from his supporters at the final whistle. Earlier United stormed out of the blocks and should have been ahead with successive efforts from Jesse Lingard just off target. Burnley, off the back of their mid-week Europa League exit, gifted the visitors time and space and were behind to a powerful Lukaku header from a superb cross by the industrious Alexis Sanchez. The Belgian increased the lead a minute before the break when he capitalised on some poor defending to beat the unfortunate Joe Hart. Although Shaun Deitch's side showed more endeavour in the final period, United should have been out of site, with Lukaku through twice - the first opportunity he rounded the keeper only to be bundled over but without reward. He then was thwarted by the hand of Mee, but the referee refused pleas for a second red card . Rashford's loss of control did put his side under late pressure but Mourinho was delighted with the performance and result, while bemoaning the glut of chances that went begging.
