Manchester United vs Chelsea, 2-1, Premier League, 25.02.2018

Manchester United vs Chelsea Premier League 25 February 2018 Old Trafford Full Time: 2-1 "Jose's joy- Antonio's agony" Jesse Lingard's late header heaped further pressure on Chelsea boss Antonio Conte whose flagging side lost more ground in their fight for a top four position. But for arch-rival Jose Mourinho, victory could hardly have been sweeter as his team came from behind to record a hard-earned 2-1 victory to re-take the second spot ahead of Liverpool. The Champions now trail United by six points and will have left Old Trafford wondering how their total early dominance eventually counted for nothing. The opening minutes witnessed a surge of blue shirts forcing the pace and Alvaro Morata struck the bar from close range as it seemed only a matter of time before the deadlock would be broken. Willian and Eden Hazard were a constant menace as time and again they exposed the United back line as Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof struggled to cope with the threat And it was no surprise when an alert Hazard sent Willian through to beat the normally-safe David de Gea at his near post, the keeper beating the ground in frustration at his rare error.Indeed it would be an uncharacteristically nervy afternoon for the man whose mid-week heroics had kept Sevilla at bay. But suddenly the Reds came to life and after Alexis Sanchez had finished weakly when well placed, eight minutes before the interval drew level thanks to the sharpness of Romelu Lukaku who linked superbly with Alexis Sanchez and Anthony Martial before driving home from close range. United started the second half at a much higher tempo and Chelsea was back-peddling as their mid-week exertions against Barcelona appeared to have caught up with them. They still managed to carve up a couple of openings but De Gea kept out Morata and Drinkwater before a Lukaku volley brought out a stunning Courtois tip-over. But the decisive strike came from Lingard who darted between a static back line to head home a superb Lukaku cross. Even then the Londoners had the ball in the net but Morata was ruled offside although replays showed the striker was a shade unlucky to have his effort chalked off. Scott Mc Tominay continues to grow in stature alongside the dominating Nemanja Matic while for Chelsea, Hazard and Willian were electrifying in the early stages. But its Mourinho with the broadest smile tonight as Conte is left the reflect on what might have been and what could be on the horizon if matters don't improve rapidly. Commentary by Lew Fink

Manchester United vs Huddersfield, 2-0, Premier League, 03.02.2018
Manchester United vs Huddersfield, 2-0, Premier League, 03.02.2018

Manchester United vs Huddersfield 3rd January 2018 Old Trafford Full Time: 2-0 On an afternoon charged with emotion, it eventually fell to Romelu Lukaku and home debutant Alexis Sanchez to finally unpick a resolute, and, at times, robust Huddersfield defense to narrow the gap slightly at the top. Before kick-off, a minute silence was held for the 23 victims of the Munich Air Disaster, of which the 60th anniversary takes place this coming Tuesday, February 6th, 2018. Having started calamitously against Spurs just three days before, the Reds were anxious to avoid making similar mistakes as the Yorkshire side dug in to absorb the early pressure. Only the outstanding, hard-working Sanchez with a stinging low drive and Jesse Lingard with a weaker effort, caused any initial concern, although Scott McTominay - selected ahead of the dropped Paul Pogba- was flattened as he challenged for a cross and denied the penalty he deserved. Jose Mourinho's halftime talk seemed to spring the side to life and the subdued Lukaku was sharp and decisive, turning home an excellent cross from the hard-working Juan Mata. Not long after, Sanchez was brought down just inside the box and was given the opportunity to secure his first United goal in front of the Stretford End. He had missed three out of the last six spot-kicks he had taken for Arsenal and failed with this one too, although he had the good fortune to force the ball home after his initial shot was saved. Rashford, Martial, and a more relaxed Pogba were all brought on as the manager rang the changes and it was a shame to see other openings squandered before the visitors finally came out of their shell in the closing minutes, but to no avail. So the lead is down to 13 points with City drawing at Burnley - still a very tall order to claw back. Overall though, it was an improved performance in which Shaw, Mata Valencia, and Pogba were back in the groove, and hopefully, the Tottenham fade-out is well behind them now. Manchester United vs CSKA Moscow, 2-1, Champions League, 05.12.2017
Manchester United vs CSKA Moscow, 2-1, Champions League, 05.12.2017

Manchester United vs CSKA Moscow Champions League, Group Stage 05.12.2017 FT 2-1 Manchester United strode through to the knockout stage of the Champions League with what in the end turned out to be a hard-fought win against CSKA Moscow last night. With five victories from six matches, they topped their group but will encounter sterner tasks ahead if they are to make a real impact in this year's competition. Despite dominating the opening period, it looked as though the sides would go in level at half-time. Marcus Rashford hit the post early on and the impressive Luke Shaw, in his first start of the season drove a shot goalwards only to be denied by Igor Akinfeev with Romemlu Lukaku failing to convert the rebound. Another effort from the left back just failed to find Rashford as United dominated but without reward. But with seconds to go the Russians took a shock interval lead when Fernades' low cross was deflected in by Alam Dzageoev with the officials adjudging Daley Blind having played him onside when he was actually beyond the by-line! A second-half onslaught ensued, CSKA were forced back time and again and eventually caved in in two dramatic minutes. Firstly Lukaku beat his marker to prod home only his second goal in a dozen matches and almost immediately Rashford netted the winner via a fine ball from Juan Mata. After that, Jose Mourinho rang the changes with Ander Herrea, Lukaku and Antonio Valencia taking an early bath with Sundays' clash with City in mind. There was just one moment of concern when Romero kept out a close-range effort but the Reds saw it through as they prepare for the big one this coming weekend. Commentary by Lew Fink

Man United vs Benfica, 2-0 - Champions League, 31.10.2017
Man United vs Benfica, 2-0 - Champions League, 31.10.2017

Man United vs Benfica Champions League Group Stage 31.10.2017 FT - 2-0 Old Trafford Job done - well almost! It will take some sort of freakish outcome from the final two group games to deprive Manchester United of a place in the last 16 of the Champions League after recording a patchy 2-0 win over Benfica at Old Trafford. Anyone expecting a goal bonanza against a side who had offered little in Portugal two weeks ago would have been sorely disappointed. Anthony Martial had appeared to have earned his side the perfect start when winning a penalty after being brought down following a jinking run into the box but his weak spot-kick was easily pushed away by rookie keeper Mile Svilar. And indeed it was the visitors showing surprising attacking flair who almost snatched a shock lead but were thwarted thanks to a magnificent save by David de Gea from a Gonzales drive. It's really tough for Romalu Lukaku at the moment as the striker once again failed to find the target - his fifth successive start without a goal - but at least was able to record a goal-bound shot, a header just over and a one-on-one with the keeper he would normally have expected to convert. The breakthrough finally came a minute before the break when the outstanding Nemanja Matic's drive came back off a post but hit the diving Svilar on his should before bouncing back into the net, Jose Mourinho rang his final two changes after halftime with Marcus Rashford and Ander Herrera replacing Juan Mata and Martial and it was the young England striker who was brought down allowing Daley Blind to fire home the resultant penalty. Benfica was still threatening and missed a couple of opportunities of their own but in truth, the Reds always had this contest under control and the flares let off by the vociferous visiting fans did little to raise their side's spirits. Manchester United vs Crystal Palace - 4-0, Premier League, 30.09.2017
Manchester United vs Crystal Palace - 4-0, Premier League, 30.09.2017

Man United vs Crystal Palace Premier League Saturday 30 September, 15:00 Old Trafford Full Time: 4 - 0 Four is our favourite number. Manchester United once again declared at this all-too-familiar number as they brushed aside a game but ultimately outclassed Crystal Palace who are continuing to create records, albeit unwanted ones, of their own with seven successive Premiership defeats and not a single goal in 630 minutes football. The south Londoners must have faced this second successive trip to Manchester with some foreboding and it took Marcus Rashford less than three minutes to cleverly pull the ball back for Juan Mata to open the scoring. The visitors did threaten on the odd occasion but were unable to capitalise on their rare openings and Ashley Young, continuing his excellent form of late, sent in another teasing ball from the left allowing Marouane Fellaini to finish at the far post. Could United match or even exceed the five-goal hammering poor Roy Hodgson's side suffered last weekend and certainly the signs were encouraging as Romelu Lukaku was busting a gut to add to his stunning 10 goal start to the campaign? As it turned out it was Fellaini who notched the third with a close-range effort and as the chances came and went it looked as though his Belgian teammate would miss out this time. But with four minutes to go, inevitably Lukaku had the final say when he tapped in his 11th goal in all competitions to send the Reds back to the top of the table, if only for a couple of hours. City's narrow but impressive win gave them the outright leadership once more and with Tottenham brilliant again on the road it will be interesting to see if they can offer a challenge to the two title favourites who have now established a five-point margin over the rest. Manchester United vs Everton - 4-0, Premier League, 17.09.2017
Manchester United vs Everton - 4-0, Premier League, 17.09.2017

Man United vs Everton Premier League 17.09.2017 Old Trafford FT 4-0 Yet another amazing late three goal bonanza has seen Manchester United position themselves alongside bitter rivals City at the head of the Premiership. Both sides have scored 16 goals conceded two and have 13 points from five games. And, as many have predicted, a battle royal to see who lifts the ultimate prize next May is well underway. The Reds couldn't have asked for a better start with Antonio Valencia half-volleying a Nemanja Matic crossfield ball high into the net past a despairing Pickford in the Everton goal with such force it reminded you of Sir Bobby Charlton in his heyday. Romelu Lukaku missed a glorious opportunity to double the lead when he prodded wide from close range but by then that man Wayne Rooney on his return to the stage of so many of his triumphs had lifted the Merseysiders with some superb distribution and had even come close to a dream equaliser as well. Shortly after half-time, he came even closer but the magnificent David de Gea came to the rescue and United were suddenly under pressure as the momentum appeared to swing against them. A worried Jose Mourinho began to ring the changes with Jesse Lingard introduced at the expense of the ineffectual Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial replaced Juan Mata. The warm applause that greeted the departure of Rooney was immediately followed by the opening of the floodgates. A glaring defensive error by Williams, allowed Lukaku to set up Henryk Mkhitaryan for the second and as the game approached its final moments Lukaku finally got his goal after the ball arrived at his feet following a deflection. There was even time for Martial to calmly slot home his third goal of the season from the penalty spot after a handball by Schneiderlin allowing the Reds to share pole position in what could turn out to be a two-horse race with all other rivals dropping points this weekend.
