It is the second bronze for USA in the history of the World Championship after that of 1994. USA have one world title to their name, dating from 1986. The third set score of 32-30 ties the previous high of this tournament from the Japan v Argentina game 3-2 (26-24, 20-25, 30-32, 25-20, 15-13) on 18 September in Florence. The all-time high in the World Championships is 40-38 from the Tunisia v Puerto Rico game, 3-2 (38-40, 28-26, 16-25, 25-22, 15-11), in 2006. Matt Anderson was the ace in coach John Speraw's sleeve to catch the bronze: an outstanding 29 points allowed USA to eventually win after losing a thrilling first set, and go home with a prestigious consolation prize. Team USA had a much longer night than Serbia on Saturday, and needed to administrate the remaining bits of energy in order to retrieve their consistency, while the Balkan side had more time to regroup - but also to regret. Nemanja Petric for Marko Ivovic was coach Nikola Grbic's only change in the starting six, while Speraw picked Daniel McDonnell in David Smith's place: veteran in, veteran out. The two teams chased the bronze with true grit, with an endless third set as the turning point of the match: Anderson was decisive, scoring 11 of the 32 points the Americans needed to force Serbia to bend the knee. Paradoxally, the Americans were the freshest entering the fourth and decisive set, simply dominated, and closed by a serve fault by Drazen Luburic - an unfair ending for Serbia's backup opposite, able to score 12 points in a convincing offensive effort (58% attack with neither errors or killer blocks conceded). Brazil, will now compete in their fifth straight and sixth overall final of a World Championship, vying for their fourth world title. The South Americans will face on Sunday in the final the winner of the second semifinal, following at 21:15 local time (19:15 GMT), between defending champions Poland and USA. Serbia will play for bronze against the loser of the Poland v Serbia game. It took Brazil two pair of extraordinarily accurate hands to catch the pass for the final against Serbia: Bruno Rezende and William Arjona took turns and made the Selecao unmarkable as Brazil dominated completely. When they first met, early in the tournament, their minds seemed to be full of doubts about their true potential; but some twenty days later, Serbia and Brazil entered the semifinals as the two teams that had grown the most along the way - and with very clear ideas on what to do. A nearly packed Pala Alpitour could appreciate an impressive offensive quality in both teams, as Brazil ended with a 61% attack percentage and Serbia "only" 52%. The first two sets were dominated by Bruno, whose hands gave Brazil the chance to play their best offensive volleyball so far: old friend Lucas Saatkamp (10 points, 7/7 attack) allowed the son of legendary Bernardo to propose a number of first tempo attacks that you will not find in volleyball playbooks. Felipe 'Lipe' Fonteles was the go-to guy when the ball was hot - and did not disappoint, closing his match with 8 out of 12 attacks transformed without suffering killer blocks or making errors. In the third set the Serbians opted for a change of attitude, driven by Aleksandar Atanasijevic (16 points) and Uros Kovacevic (71% attack, 14 points). The double-handed lob, a signature play for Uros, created confusion in the Brazilian defensive line, and coach Renan Dal Zotto chose to put William Arjona in as he had successfully did against Russia. And the 39-year old backup setter not only gave the Brazilians fresh offensive ideas, but he also single-handedly blocked Marko Ivovic in the decisive action of the match, giving Lucas the chance to close it. Ivovic's serve was the spring to every Serbian effort: impressive for power and accuracy (4 aces, 5 errors). Italy, on the other hand, could not repeat their formidable offensive performances: the outside hitters were encaged in Nikola Grbic's strategy (both Filippo Lanza and Osmany Juantorena below 40% efficiency), and home hero Ivan Zaytsev encountered strong opposition (29% attack and only 9 points in the end). As many as 5,200 spectators watched this matchup and confirmed Bologna’s status as a city that loves volleyball. The reigning Olympic champions started quite bad, trailing 0-2, but came back to 2-2 and stormed to an eventual 3-2 victory (22-25, 23-25, 25-19, 25-15, 15-12), showing why they have won three times the gold medals in the history of the World Championships. An outstanding Evandro Guerra (top scorer with 30 points) confirmed once again Brazil’s status as one of the big favourites in the competition as this victory will for sure make the Brazilians dream even more about reaching the final. Douglas Souza (14 points) helped his teammates come back in the match, as he was the leader on the court in the third set, when Brazil ‘woke up’. Eder Carbonera (10 points) too was much of a help. Sam Deroo (19 points) and Bram Van den Dries (18 points) from the Red Dragons were most prolific for their team. The Brazilian head coach Renan Dal Zotto started the match giving some rest to the regular starting players (with only libero Maique Reis Nascimento on the court). Belgium, who entered the court highly motivated for the win, were leading at 8-5 by the time of the first technical timeout. The Red Dragons kept their leadership thanks to a good performance by Igor Grobelny and Bram Van den Dries and with the result being 20-17 for Belgium, Renan Dal Zotto called a timeout. Again, Van den Dries killed the ball at 23-20 and the Brazilian head coach made yet another attempt at changing the situation. At 24-22, Isac Santos entered the court for serving, but made a mistake and Belgium opened the match with a 25-22 win. Many interesting rallies marked the beginning of the second set with Belgium taking the lead, but Evandro Guerra scored two aces in a row to get Brazil close to the opponents. Eder Carbonera also recorded one ace to his name in these moments and equalised for 10-10. Because of their unforced errors, Belgium lost a little bit of their concentration, and Brazil took the lead at 13-11. Sam Deroo (eight points in the set) helped Belgium get closer at 16-17 and the play continued point-for-point (20-20, 21-21). Brazil were leading at 23-21 but the Red Dragons showed fighting spirit and Pieter Coolman with an ace put an end to the discussion for 25-23. Douglas Souza – the top scorer from the Brazil vs. Slovenia match, entered the court in the third set, as this way Renan Dal Zotto showed his team might have qualified for the Final Six already, but was still seeking for the victory. It worked out good as Brazil were leading with a small gap for most of the time. Belgium ‘woke up’ at 13-14, but the reigning Olympic champions managed to control the game at 17-14. A nice performance by Igor Grobelny kept the Belgian hopes in this set alive but Douglas Souza closed it with a thunderous ace for 25-19. It was a close affair in the first minutes of the next set, but Brazil broke away with a series of straight points for 11-6. Andrea Anastasi took a timeout, but the Brazilian players were just too dominant and Belgium would not be able to regroup. The South Americans outclassed their opponents in all aspects of the game and took the set at a landslide 25-15. Brazil scored the first point in the tiebreak and did not let any chances to Belgium to take the lead. Douglas Souza recorded an ace for 12-8. Anastasi called a timeout and it produced some effect, as a little bit later Grobelny made an ace. However, he gave the Brazilians the opportunity for a first match point because of a serve error, right after that ace. Brazil then closed the set and the match at 15-12. With this victory Serbia topped the Pool H with 17 points before the match of the second placed team Poland against France later today. The legendary coach of Argentina Julio Velasco was suspended from today’s match following his offensive gesture during the previous game of his team against Poland last night. In the end Petar Krsmanovic did a great job from the service line and after another huge block by Ivovic, the Balkans won the opening set by 25-18. In the second set the Argentinians managed to come back with a good block and were 2 points ahead by 15-13. The Serbian head coach Nikola Grbic then took a time-out. After the pause his players made two blocks in a row, Cristian Poglajen did an unforced error in attack and the Balkans took back the lead (16-15). Srecko Lisinac secured a huge 4-point advantage with a powerful ace (21-17) and Serbia won the second set by 25-22. In the next minutes Nikola Grbic’s players reduced the unforced errors and with good black-defense managed to come back (18-19). The result eliminated Asians from the 2018 FIVB Men’s World Championship while Canada is still in the running for the second place in Pool G. In a somber mood after Friday’s debacle against co-hosts Bulgaria Iran failed to show up in the first set. The Asians had a disastrous kill rate of 43%, just one block point and even always reliable captain Marouf was out of sorts. And he was taken off after the second technical break as Canada pulled away for a 25-20 win. Roles were reversed in Set 2. Marouf was magnificent leaving his attackers often on a single block or even clean at the net. As a result the kill rate rose to 75% and Iranians tied the score after a 25-20 win. In the third set Canada made a blistering start winning 8 of the first 9 points and never looked back. The North Americans closed it 25-15 for their most comprehensive set win of the championship. Searching for an inspiration Iran head coach Igor Kolakovic rolled the dice with 17-year old Amir Toukhteh starting the fourth set. And he was rewarded for his faith. Iran was 16-18 behind when the youngster hit two consecutive aces to turn things around. The Asian team went on an 8-2 run and despite needing all of its set points won the set 25-23. Canada raced to a 5-1 lead in the tie-break but a scoreboard malfunction caused a stoppage of play. After the resumption Iran went on a 5-1 run of its own to tie the score. But Canada never trailed and a serve error by Ghafour on the second match point ended the thriller. Nicholas Hoag accounted for 29 of Canada points, John Gordon Perrin ended with 28. Once again Amir Ghafour led Iran in scoring, finishing with 24 points. About the FIVB The FIVB is the governing body responsible for all forms of volleyball on a global level.
