Tom Curran's quickfire 19 could not prevent the Sydney Sixers from falling to a five-wicket defeat by the Hobart Hurricanes. Curran produced the score from 14 balls as the Sixers finished on 161 for eight from their 20 overs in the Big Bash League match in Hobart. Joe Denly mustered just 10 at the top of the order for the Sixers, while Jofra Archer took one for 36 from his four overs for the hosts. England all-rounder Curran then removed opener Matthew Wade for 15 and also took a catch, but the Hurricanes still reached their total of 162 with a ball to spare.

Duanne Olivier ripped through Pakistan to leave South Africa in control just one day into the second Test in Cape Town. The seamer returned four for 48 from 15 overs as the Proteas skittled Pakistan for 177 - their third score less than 200 in the series. South Africa picked up where they left off from their six-wicket first Test victory, denying Pakistan the chance to build any kind of total. And at stumps on day one, South Africa were 123 for two, with Aiden Markram having made 78. Visiting captain Sarfraz Ahmed hit 56 amid Pakistan's latest batting collapse, with Shan Masood mustering 44. Mohammad Amir was left stranded unbeaten on 22, while Asad Shafiq with 20 was the only other tourist to hit double figures. Dale Steyn bagged three wickets and Kagiso Rabada two for the hosts. Amir had Dean Elgar caught behind for 20 once the Proteas replied, before Masood bowled Markram in a rare chink of Pakistan light. That dismissal proved the final act of the day, with Hashim Amla poised to resume on 24 and South Africa trailing by 54 runs.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted that he does not want to leave Manchester United next summer. Victory at Newcastle United meant Solskjaer continued his 100 per cent start as interim manager and he challenged his players to continue that form with tougher tests ahead. He also became the first United manager to win opening four games since Sir Matt Busby 73 years ago. Tottenham await after the FA Cup clash against Reading, with United now just six points adrift of the Champions League places. 'I don't want to (leave) - of course I won't,' Solskjaer said. 'It's such a great bunch of players, fantastic atmosphere, but it's the next game, it's the next game. 'I'm doing my job as long as I'm here. If you win four you can win another four with this club. 'That's the challenge, that's the standard we know. That used to be the challenge from the gaffer (Sir Alex Ferguson).' Romelu Lukaku opened the scoring seconds after coming off the bench and revealed Solskjaer is already rubbing off on United's attackers during training at Carrington. Cardiff 1-5 Manchester United Manchester United 3-1 Huddersfield Manchester United 4-1 Bournemouth Newcastle 0-2 Manchester United Total points: 12 Goals Scored: 14 Goals Conceded: 3 Marcus Rashford - whose free-kick made Lukaku's goal - is a chief beneficiary, scoring the second, and Solskjaer heaped praise on the 21 year-old. 'He was calm, composed and just passed it past the goalkeeper,' he added. 'But his free-kicks, that the first one against Cardiff, and then he does it again, he's got a great hit. He must have been watching Cristiano Ronaldo when he was practising. 'That was a tough test today, he gets kicked, and he gets tackled, he goes for headers, he wins, he challenges, he runs. 'Marcus is going to be a top, top number nine, definitely but then we've got Rom, so sometimes he'll play on the right, sometimes on the left, sometimes through the middle, he'll get enough games.' Rafa Benitez bemoaned Newcastle's luck and would not discuss Jonjo Shelvey's horror tackle on Paul Pogba. The Frenchman left St James' Park limping. 'We were not lucky with many decisions,' Benitez said. 'I think we did enough to deserve more. It's the final decision, that's the key if we want to score more goals. 'It's a pity that after the big effort you concede a goal like that and lose the game.'
Subscribe to our channel: https://goo.gl/pqS0mLThe return of David Silva and Fernandinho helps Manchester City to important win over Southampton. Manchester City have looked unrecognisable over the past week. About as unrecognisable as David Silva with a head of hair again. The Premier League champions toiled without being able to call on Silva or Fernandinho from the start, it becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish how they were attempting to control games in midfield. There lacked a link with the front three, a worrying reliance on individualism; effectively, an antipathy to how Pep Guardiola wants to play the game. His hamstring injury left City bereft of ideas. Fernandinho’s absence left them without their fulcrum: two gaping holes no team in this division could adequately plug in tandem. There remain fitness concerns and a victory down at Southampton will not change the feeling that City are stretched to the maximum ahead of that game on Thursday night, which they prepare for as underdogs. You cannot overlook the defensive mistakes, the difficulties Oleksandr Zinchenko and Danilo suffered, and Guardiola will doubtless fret about the prospect of meeting Liverpool without a recognised left back. Yet this result resembled something of a reboot, City rediscovering an element of zip, a more cohesive unit with arguably their two most important men back. Fernandinho is understated, the sort of quietly dependable character who never forgets to take the bins out. In this case, he is the quietly dependable player who refuses to deviate from his station. That offers City a base they simply do not have otherwise and it became even more blindingly obvious during those ruinous Christmas defeats. Perhaps, in hindsight, Guardiola should have made more of a fuss with the board when they missed out on Jorginho in the summer and insisted on an substitute. None of Fernandinho’s alternatives – Ilkay Gundogan, John Stones or Danilo – are particularly adept at holding a three together. City still insist January will not bring about new signings and Guardiola appears set to muddle on in the hope Fernandinho does not enter the red zone as he did earlier in the month. Little wonder the manager went apoplectic when Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg scythed into the Brazilian late on, a straight red card and the tackle heavy enough for Fernandinho to come off straight away. Apart from his positional sense, there comes added trust when Fernandinho anchors. City are liberated, owning a confidence to take more risks while safe in the knowledge he will happily bail them out otherwise. A failure to create many meaningful opportunities against Crystal Palace and Leicester City was in part a product of defensive insecurity. It is more what he does without the ball but Fernandinho also has no issue gathering possession in tight spaces, as evidenced when he pierced Southampton from his own third after Ederson had diced with disaster inside City’s six-yard box with Zinchenko and Vincent Kompany. One comes with the other where Fernandinho and Silva are concerned. This is their sixth season together, telepathy clear. Silva flourishes with him – scoring the opener, creating four chances, his pass completion touching 90 per cent. He might look like a new man but City realise the value of their old guard.

Unai Emery apologised to Brighton supporters after booting a water bottle into the crowd during Arsenal's 1-1 draw at Amex Stadium. The Spaniard kicked the bottle and it flew up, glancing off one fan, to Emery's immediate regret. Brighton fans surrounding the incident reacted furiously but to his credit, the Arsenal manager apologised straight away. He also walked over to the section of supporters in question once the full time whistle had been blown to express his contrition once again. Emery was also seen explaining his actions to the fourth official on the touchline. After the game he briefly explained what had happened: 'I said to them, "apologies", because I kicked the bottle after a disappointing action for us in the last minutes. 'It wasn't hard, but it touched one supporter for them. I said to them I'm sorry.' It was a flashpoint for the Gunners boss in a frustrating Boxing Day evening against Chris Hughton's spirited side. The officials were satisfied that the incident was dealt with and decided not to include it in the match report. The Seagulls responded to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's opening goal with a Jurgen Locadia equaliser. Mesut Ozil was brought off at half-time but Arsenal failed to come up with a winner and Brighton continually threatened on the break.

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos demanded respect for current coach Santiago Solari as he batted away questions on Friday about whether Jose Mourinho could re-join the club in the future after being sacked by Manchester United. Mourinho, who was sacked by United on Tuesday, spent three eventful years with Real between 2010 and 2013, winning the La Liga title with a record 100 points, scoring 121 goals, as well as lifting the Copa del Rey. Yet his tenure also deeply divided the club's supporters and players, and Ramos was among the most outspoken of the Portuguese coach's critics. Yet with Real still reeling from Zinedine Zidane's departure, having sacked his replacement Julen Lopetegui in October and then appointed the inexperienced Solari, some Spanish media reports have said president Florentino Perez could be tempted to bring Mourinho back. 'Mourinho left us five years ago yet everyone keeps talking about him. People need to show more respect to the coach we have now,' Ramos told a news conference ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup final against Al Ain on Saturday. 'I'm not the person who decides which coach comes here or doesn't, some people seem to think that the captains decide which coach Real Madrid appoints.' Victory over local side Al Ain in the Club World Cup final in Abu Dhabi would hand former Real midfielder Solari his first trophy as coach and see the club overtake Barcelona as the most successful team in the competition's history with four triumphs. Although Solari has led Real to 10 wins in 12 games since succeeding Lopetegui, the team have still faced plenty of criticism for some insipid recent performances. They have fallen five points behind Barcelona in the La Liga title race but Ramos believes winning a trophy would offer the team an emotional boost. 'No-one can doubt the record of any one of us and we have another chance to defend the Club World Cup title,' Ramos added. 'No-one has ever done this (win it four times), we are looking forward to the final with hope and we want to go home with the prize. It would be great for us on an emotional level to come back with the trophy.'
Subscribe to our channel: https://goo.gl/pqS0mLOle Gunnar Solskjaer on perfect start as Manchester United manager. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer saw his Manchester United side thrash Cardiff with five goals in his first game and said: 'Football is easy if you've got good players.' Jesse Lingard scored twice, with Marcus Rashford, Ander Herrera and Anthony Martial also on the score sheet as United scored five for the first time since 2013, when Sir Alex Ferguson was manager. After replacing Jose Mourinho, who was sacked on Tuesday amid dressing-room unrest following a series of public criticisms against them, interim manager Solskjaer got the same side playing with freedom. 'They are a great bunch of players and their quality is unbelievable,' said Solskjaer. 'I arrived on Wednesday night and only had Thursday and Friday with the players. 'Wayne Rooney text me and gave me some advice —so it must be down to him! He told me to make them play football, enjoy themselves and be Manchester United.' Indeed, in his capacity as a pundit for BT Sport during the game, Rooney said it was right that United sacked Mourinho. 'Something had to change. It was the right decision [to sack Jose],' said Rooney. 'I stay in touch with a lot of people at the club. I speak to them quite a lot. 'To be a successful club you need to have everything right. That relationship between some of the staff and players wasn't great. Bringing Ole and Mick in, that will change things. 'The staff are smiling and happy and that rubs off on the players. I think it's a good move for the club and gives them more time to get the right man in the summer. Some of the players need to step up.' Asked what he had worked on in such a short time, Solskjaer added: 'We had a session yesterday [Friday] about patterns of play and we wanted Ashley Young and Luke Shaw to push on more, it worked out well today. 'Your work-rate is the easiest thing to work on. It is free. It is the attitude and application of the boys. If we approach all the games like this — and we want them to approach them all like this — with combination play and playing the ball forward then I'll be happy. 'The foundation was in the defending. I thought the two centre-backs and two full-backs were brilliant.'

Manchester United thrashed Cardiff City 5-1 during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first game in charge. Marcus Rashford, Ander Herrera, Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard, who scored twice, were all on the scoresheet as the visitors romped to victory in south Wales. Here, Sportsmail's CHRIS WHEELER runs the rule over both sets of players at the Cardiff City Stadium. DAVID DE GEA 6.5 - Rescued Mourinho many times but Solskjaer won't want to be quite so reliant on his keeper. No chance with penalty. ASHLEY YOUNG 6.5 - Preferred to Dalot and Valencia at right-back by the new boss, and produced a typically solid performance. PHIL JONES 7 - Back in the side after just five appearances under Mourinho this term, and marshalled United's defence very well. VICTOR LINDELOF 7.5 - Brought the ball out from the back well as United looked to move it forward at every opportunity. LUKE SHAW 7 - Fell out with Mourinho over back twinge, but nothing wrong with his bravery when he cleared and clashed heads with Paterson. ANDER HERRERA 7 - Scored United's second when he had the confidence to let fly from 25 yards. Didn't do that too often before. NEMANJA MATIC 6.5 - Mourinho loyalist will give Solskjaer more of the same. Simple and unfussy alongside Pogba here. PAUL POGBA 8 - Returned from exile on the bench and raised his game for the occasion, helping to set up the second and third goals. JESSE LINGARD 8 - Continues to give United great energy. Involved in the best link-up play and scored twice, having won a penalty. MARCUS RASHFORD 8.5 - Solskjaer will be more inclined to give youth a chance, and Rashford was excellent despite conceding a silly penalty. ANTHONY MARTIAL 7.5 - Gifted Frenchman played with the handbrake off at last and was rewarded with a wonderfully worked goal.
