Furious Rugby Australia Blame SA Rugby For Financial Loss
Cash-strapped Rugby Australia remains furious with South Africa for pulling out of the Rugby Championship and admits the Springboks’ no-show will cost it – and all SANZAAR’s competing nations – millions of dollars. South Africa’s governing body only announced last Friday it was withdrawing, just two weeks before the tournament kicks off. The world champions’ absence has forced SANZAAR into reverting to a Tri-Nations tournament featuring Australia, New Zealand and Argentina, with the original 12-match competition reduced to six games. It’s been speculated that South Africa will forego ZAR50-million rand for not fronting up. “The financial loss for them will be great,” Rugby Australia chairman Hamish McLennan said on Wednesday. But the Springboks’ scratching will also seriously impact RA’s finances. The season-opener is the pick of the first-round and could be a palate cleanser after the error-ridden Springbok Showdown last weekend. Both teams like to play a fast-paced, positive brand of rugby, so the Durban derby has the potential to produce fireworks. The electricity of the encounter will be diluted if the possibility of showers becomes a reality. Lockdown robbed the surging Sharks of the momentum that propelled them to the top of the table in Super Rugby. It also allowed the limping Lions an opportunity to regroup. While the result didn’t go their way, the Super Fan Saturday hit out against the Stormers was a promising performance. The Lions looked reinvigorated so watch them closely. Crusaders crowned Super Rugby Aotearoa champions
The Crusaders have wrapped up the inaugural Investec Super Rugby Aotearoa competition with a 32-22 victory over a gutsy Highlanders side at Orangetheory Stadium, all with a game in hand. In front of over 17,500 fans in Christchurch, it took 63 minutes for the Crusaders to hit the lead, with the Highlanders dominating the first hour. It took just over a minute for the Highlanders to strike, through in-form flanker Shannon Frizell. The Crusaders then hit back, a brilliant try to Richie Mo’unga, who had another sublime performance. Jona Nareki had a great foot race with his opposite, Sevu Reece, taking an intercept to run 80 metres to score in the left corner and give the Highlanders a 17-13 lead at the break. Josh McKay made one of the plays of the year with an incredible try-saving tackle on Bryn Hall who just had to fall over the line. Michael Collins scored for the Highlanders in the 53rd minute, but from there on it was all the home side. Showing their class in the final 20 minutes, as they have done all season. George Bridge bagged a double and Braydon Ennor scored the match-winner to seal the victory, with still one more week of the competition to go. The Crusaders were awarded the Tū Kōtahi Aotearoa trophy in front of their home fans, and also performed their haka, Takina Te Kawa.
