France vs Scotland Preview | Six Nations 2021 Decider
It all comes down to this. 80 minutes will decide the fate of the 2021 Guinness Six Nations title as France attempt to usurp Wales with victory against Scotland in Paris. An extraordinary Championship appeared done and dusted with 12 minutes to go in Super Saturday’s final game as Wales held a 10-point lead over 14-man Les Bleus. But the twists and turns kept on coming and, after Wales were reduced to 13 by two yellow cards, France struck twice through Charles Ollivon and Brice Dulin to secure a 32-30 win. While that dramatic defeat ended Wales’ Grand Slam bid, Wayne Pivac’s side will still lift the title unless France defeat Scotland with a bonus point and at least a 21-point margin of victory. World Rugby Rankings: England Reclaim Third Place
Wins over France and Scotland have seen England and Ireland both improve their position in the World Rugby Men’s Rankings. England reclaim the third place they lost a fortnight ago thanks to their thrilling 23-20 victory in the 108th edition of ‘Le Crunch’, while Ireland move above Australia and into sixth following their equally tight 27-24 win at Murrayfield. Five other teams are on the up, too, without even taking to the field, because of the results in the Six Nations 2021 and the Rugby Europe Championship 2021. Argentina benefitted from Scotland’s near-miss, taking eighth place off them with the Scots dropping to ninth. Meanwhile, Uruguay swap places with Spain, who were narrowly beaten 25-19 at home by Georgia, and are now 17th and 18th respectively. And the closest result of them all, a 28-27 home defeat to Romania, has cost Portugal three places. Os Lobos drop to 24th with Hong Kong, Namibia and Canada the countries to benefit. France Under Investigation After COVID Blunder
France’s participation in the Six Nations hangs in the balance as French rugby federation’s president Bernard Laporte has been ordered to submit a report into their Covid-19 outbreak to the French government. Sports Minister Roxane Maracineanu has demanded an official internal investigation after eleven players and the coach tested positive for the global virus. World Rugby Rankings: England drop to third
England’s first defeat to Scotland at Twickenham since 1983 has cost them second place in the World Rugby Men’s Rankings, with the All Blacks now the closest team to South Africa. Finishing 11-6 to the visitors, the match was very different from the 38-38 draw in the corresponding fixture two years ago with chances to score few and far between. But Scotland ran out worthy winners after scoring the only try of the game through powerful wing Duhan van der Merwe, while Finn Russell and Owen Farrell kicked two penalties apiece. Eddie Jones’ side dropped two rating points after what was also their first-ever loss to Scotland on the opening weekend of the Six Nations, and they are now a fraction under one-and-a-half points behind the All Blacks in third. George North helped spark a second-half blitz from Wales that saw them come from behind to defeat 14-man Ireland 21-16 in Cardiff. Peter O’Mahony made unwanted history by becoming the first Irishman to be sent off in the Guinness Six Nations when he made contact with the head of Tomas Francis trying to clear out a ruck on 13 minutes, giving referee Wayne Barnes no option but to brandish a red card. Yet Ireland responded positively to going down to 14 men with Tadhg Beirne crossing for a try that their first-half play deserved for a 13-6 half-time lead. But North’s scintillating try ten minutes into the second half turned the tide back in Wales’s favour, with Louis Rees-Zammit then dotting down on his first Guinness Six Nations appearance to give the hosts a lead they never surrendered. Scotland smashed their Twickenham hoodoo to smithereens with a famous win to regain the Calcutta Cup on the 150th anniversary of their rivalry with England. Duhan van der Merwe’s first-half try and a pair of Finn Russell penalties guided them to their first victory at England HQ since 1983, while the defending champions limped to their first home Championship defeat in three years. The hosts conceded far too many penalties and, though Scotland struggled to convert possession and territory into points, they dominated the match. Van der Merwe muscled his way through three tacklers to dot down in the corner for the game’s only try, while England’s points came from a pair of Owen Farrell penalties. Australia vs Argentina Preview | Tri Nations 2020
Although the Tri Nations Cup is all-but secured by New Zealand after their emphatic 38-0 whitewash of Argentina last week, this match is technically not a dead rubber. The Pumas need to win by a 93-point margin to upset the points differential, whilst the Australia need an extra eight points more. In the immense unlikelihood that either side will defeat the other by so many points, there is little pressure on this match to do anything other than win it and not come last. Argentina, however, have been in turmoil this week over the sacking of their captain Pablo Matera and his suspension, alongside Guido Petti and Santiago Socino, for historical xenophobic social media posts uncovered recently and then the flip-flopping on that decision on Wednesday. This unrest in the camp, as well as their brutal defeat last weekend, should leave little room in their stomachs for a last hurrah here and the Wallabies can enjoy an offensive exhibition where they likely share the tries amongst a rotating line-up. Cheetahs lost a close encounter with Sharks last Friday to be leap-frogged by their opponents into third place of the Super Rugby unlocked table. That 19-13 match displayed their season so far in a nutshell, as they are the team with the meanest defence but also the second-lowest scorers behind bottom-of-the-league Griquas. They play away to another big side now as the Stormers top the Sharks in second place on points difference as the two teams left in the league that can realistically challenge the runaway leaders, Bulls.
