World Rugby Rankings: Wales surge and England fall
Wales move up and England, Ireland and Italy all drop down the World Rugby Men’s Rankings after Saturday’s matches in the Six Nations. Wales are at their highest position in the World Rugby Men’s Rankings for just over a year after taking the Triple Crown with a 40-24 win over England in Cardiff on Saturday. Wayne Pivac’s side have risen two places in the latest standings that have been released today, leapfrogging Australia and Ireland. England have dropped another place to fourth after their second defeat in the tournament, with France moving above them despite the postponement of their match against Scotland. Wales, who started the tournament ranked ninth, could climb into the top four if, as expected, they beat Italy in the next round on March 13 to remain on course for the Grand Slam, and England lose to France on the same day. World Rugby Rankings: Wales continue to climb as Ireland drop
Wales started Six Nations 2021 in ninth place in the rankings, just one place off their all-time worst position. But a 21-16 home win against Ireland on the opening weekend followed by a thrilling 25-24 victory away to Scotland in round two, has lifted them up to seventh. Louis Rees-Zammit was Wales’ two-try hero in a game where Scotland threw away a 17-8 half-time lead and lost Zander Fagerson to a second-half red card. Scotland captain Stuart Hogg also bagged a brace but the day belonged to Wales and their new wing sensation. World Rugby Rankings: England drop to third
England’s first defeat to Scotland at Twickenham since 1983 has cost them second place in the World Rugby Men’s Rankings, with the All Blacks now the closest team to South Africa. Finishing 11-6 to the visitors, the match was very different from the 38-38 draw in the corresponding fixture two years ago with chances to score few and far between. But Scotland ran out worthy winners after scoring the only try of the game through powerful wing Duhan van der Merwe, while Finn Russell and Owen Farrell kicked two penalties apiece. Eddie Jones’ side dropped two rating points after what was also their first-ever loss to Scotland on the opening weekend of the Six Nations, and they are now a fraction under one-and-a-half points behind the All Blacks in third. Owen Farrell tackle returned against Scotland and only a few people are talking about it online. The England Rugby captain has been in the headlines this past week as a few are questioning whether or not he should continue to lead England. Scotland beat England at Twickenham for the first time in 38 years this weekend. They went one stage better than the exciting draw with England at Twickenham in 2019 where Scotland came back from over a 20 point deficit to draw the match. Images from Twitter appears to show England and Saracens star Owen Farrell doing one of his signature high tackles on South African winger Duhan van der Merwe when he scored the only try of the game in the left corner. Wales vs Ireland RECAP: Second-half Comeback Sees Wales Edge Past Ireland
George North helped spark a second-half blitz from Wales that saw them come from behind to defeat 14-man Ireland 21-16 in Cardiff. Peter O’Mahony made unwanted history by becoming the first Irishman to be sent off in the Guinness Six Nations when he made contact with the head of Tomas Francis trying to clear out a ruck on 13 minutes, giving referee Wayne Barnes no option but to brandish a red card. Yet Ireland responded positively to going down to 14 men with Tadhg Beirne crossing for a try that their first-half play deserved for a 13-6 half-time lead. But North’s scintillating try ten minutes into the second half turned the tide back in Wales’s favour, with Louis Rees-Zammit then dotting down on his first Guinness Six Nations appearance to give the hosts a lead they never surrendered. Scotland smashed their Twickenham hoodoo to smithereens with a famous win to regain the Calcutta Cup on the 150th anniversary of their rivalry with England. Duhan van der Merwe’s first-half try and a pair of Finn Russell penalties guided them to their first victory at England HQ since 1983, while the defending champions limped to their first home Championship defeat in three years. The hosts conceded far too many penalties and, though Scotland struggled to convert possession and territory into points, they dominated the match. Van der Merwe muscled his way through three tacklers to dot down in the corner for the game’s only try, while England’s points came from a pair of Owen Farrell penalties. Munster vs Leinster RECAP | Guiness PRO14
Jordan Larmour’s 68th-minute try ripped the result out of Munster’s grasp as Leinster triumphed 13-10 in a Guinness PRO14 dogfight at Thomond Park. Table-topping Munster had been the better team up to that point but the defending champions produced a real moment of class to put Larmour over in the right corner. It was tightly poised at half-time, Tadhg Beirne’s try under the posts giving the hosts a 10-6 lead with fly-halves JJ Hanrahan and Johnny Sexton landing two kicks each. The second half was scoreless until replacement Ross Byrne’s grubber kick led to Larmour’s decisive try. Byrne’s conversion was enough to seal a smash-and-grab win. England win the Autumn Nations Cup in a dramatic finale
England have won the Autumn Nations Cup in a dramatic finale to the new tournament. An inexperienced France squad took Eddie Jones' side to sudden death extra time before Owen Farrell's kick sealed the deal in the second period after the end of the 80. 2000 fans were in attendance at Twickenham as Owen Farrell held his nerve to kick the winning penalty for the hosts in the second half of extra time. Nobody expected the game to reach that stage, as France fielded an inexperienced side that had just 68 international caps between them. Despite their underdog tag, France pushed England all the way and can be incredibly proud of their efforts. Both nations will now have some well earned time off before the Six Nations gets underway in just two months time.
