FSU jumped out to an early lead vs. the Frank Martin-led Gamecocks, leading by as much as 16 points in the first half, but its offense began to lose its footing as South Carolina’s offense found its stride. Malik Osbourne lead the Seminoles in scoring, putting up 15 points. Florida State held on to its lead until the midpoint of the second period, after which South Carolina took the lead and didn’t relinquish it for the rest of the game.
Resiliency has been a big part of Shane Beamer and South Carolina's identity in 2021, and it was on full display on Saturday. The Gamecocks rallied out of a 14-0 hole and stunned Auburn 21-17 to qualify for a bowl game for the first time since 2018. Beamer, a first-year head coach, got choked up in the postgame press conference after the enormous win. ZaQuandre White rushed 16 times for 99 yards and added three receptions for 69 yards and a touchdown for South Carolina. Jason Brown completed 10 of 15 passes for 157 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Auburn fell to 6-5 and wasted a superb outing from running back Tank Bigsby. He finished with 22 carries for 164 yards and a touchdown. Shedrick Jackson added seven receptions for 111 yards. TJ Finley completed 17 of 32 passes for 188 yards and one touchdown in relief of starter Bo Nix who is out for the season with a leg injury.
South Carolina football gets another shot to earn bowl eligibility as it begins a season-ending home stretch with a meeting with the SEC West’s Auburn Tigers. The Gamecocks failed to build upon their strong win over Florida when they sputtered on the road Saturday in a 31-28 loss at Missouri. Auburn also faltered, giving up a 25-point lead to Mississippi State at home behind poor pass defense that allowed Bulldogs quarterback Will Rogers 415 yards and six touchdowns on an 80% completion percentage. According to reports from ABC Columbia and On3 Sports, Auburn’s third-year starting quarterback Bo Nix won’t play against South Carolina as he broke his ankle during the Mississippi State game. Nix later confirmed the news in a Sunday night Instagram post. Reports said the Tigers are likely to play LSU transfer T.J. Finley, who led LSU’s 52-24 win over the Gamecocks last season in Baton Rouge. ESPN’s Football Power Index has been inexplicably high on the Gators all season. Even as the team dropped games to Kentucky, LSU and Georgia, it remained in the FPI top 10. But everything fell apart on Saturday night. The Gators had no answer for SEC bottom-feeder South Carolina, who absolutely dominated it en route to a 40-17 win at home. The loss leaves the program facing some hard questions about its future, and finally, Florida has dropped in the FPI from No. 8 to No. 20. Still, this is significantly higher than the Gators probably deserve based on the way they’ve played. They rank above two 8-1 teams in Oregon and Michigan State, and UF, alongside Texas (which ranks one spot above it) are the only two teams with a losing record in the top 25. ESPN still gives Florida a roughly 65% chance of winning out, but that percentage has dropped quite a bit after the showing on Saturday night, and the team should be significantly less confident in games at Missouri and vs. Florida State at home. The Gators appear to be full-on spiraling, and this probably won’t be their last drop in the rankings.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — When Shane Beamer accepted the South Carolina job last December, he recalled his days as Steve Spurrier's assistant and the big wins and raucous atmosphere when the Gamecocks were rolling. The first-year coach got his first true taste of that with Spurrier in the building as the Gamecocks routed Florida 40-17 on Saturday night. First-time starter Jason Brown threw for two touchdowns, Kevin Harris and ZaQuandre White each rushed for over 100 yards and South Carolina's defense held the potent Gators' attack to just 82 yards rushing.
CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College football team begins the final month of the 2021 regular season on Saturday with a trip to Valparaiso to face the Beacons at Brown Field as kick is set for 2 p.m.. Saturday's game will be shown on ESPN3. • The Presbyterian College football team dropped Saturday afternoon's matchup against Stetson by the count of 56-14 at Bailey Memorial Stadium in PFL action. • Redshirt freshman Reagan Cherry recorded 10 tackles and has two pass breakups, while Delvecchio Powell and Jalen Jones each scored in the setback. More players can join the watch list before a 50-member, national media panel selects the winner following the regular season. Opponent Profile • Valparaiso comes into Saturday's contest with a 2-6 mark after falling 21-14 to San Diego last weekend. In their last home game, the Beacons defeated Dayton 45-28. • Valpo is led on the ground by the Spring 2021 PFL Offensive Player of the Year Robert Washington. The South Carolina Gamecocks offensive line was severely overmatched in Saturday night’s 44-14 loss at Texas A&M. A glance through the final stat sheet doesn’t tell the entire story. The Aggies had seven tackles for loss, including three sacks. That part checks out. But the three quarterback hurries? Somebody must’ve quit counting. “We’ve certainly got some issues we’ve got to figure out,” coach Shane Beamer said. “And give Texas A&M some credit. This was the best defense – no disrespect to Kentucky or anybody else we’ve played, but this is the most impressive group, personnel-wise, that we’ve played since Georgia. ... Being down a little bit and not having (Dylan) Wonnum out there certainly didn’t help, but we’ve got confidence in the guys we had out there tonight. And got to perform better. They were definitely heating us up, but they were also sacking us when they were rushing four as well and not having to bring pressure.”
Jason Brown saw his first extended action for the South Carolina Gamecocks. The transfer quarterback from Saint Francis completed 8 of 14 passes for 84 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions in South Carolina’s 44-14 loss at Texas A&M on Saturday night. Coach Shane Beamer was asked during the post-game Zoom if it would be tough to evaluate Brown’s performance, because of the players the Aggies had on the field. “I think one drive they had some backups in, but that second drive, they had their dudes in there, if I’m not mistaken, so I’m not going to – certainly, they had some down the line guys in there, but I saw some of their top guys in there the second half as well,” Beamer said. “Let’s not chalk it up to they had their backups in there and we just went up and down the field on them. They had some good players we were blocking and throwing and catching against.”
