On this episode of The Nutmeg, Evening Standard writers are joined by former Arsenal player Alan Smith to discuss Spurs loss to Brighton on Sunday, Thomas Tuchel’s first win as Chelsea manager and Arsenal vs Manchester United. Harry Kane is targeting a return from his ankle injuries in just two weeks, Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has revealed. Kane injured both of his ankles against Liverpool on Thursday and Spurs struggled without their talisman in their abject 1-0 defeat to Brighton on Sunday. But Kane is optimistic that his latest ankle injuries are not as serious as previous ones he has suffered. Kane has had scans on both ankles and Mourinho has said it is “pretty good news”, in what is a major boost for Tottenham with their season faltering after back-to-back defeats. Elsewhere, after being frustrated by ambitionless Wolves in his first game in charge, Thomas Tuchel got off the mark yesterday with a 2-0 win against a similarly stubborn Burnley. If Mourinho sticks to type, Spurs will also try to rope-a-dope their way to three points on Thursday — even if they are the hosts. This is a classic clash of styles. Tuchel is already demonstrating a Pep Guardiola-esque obsession with control. And how Mourinho has savoured the opportunity to allow his old rival to tie himself in knots before delivering the knockout punch. And finally, with Bukayo Saka, Kieran Tierney and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang all missing, Arsenal needed players to step up for this clash with Manchester United - and Rob Holding certainly did that. In the summer, the centre-back was close to leaving Arsenal and was on the verge of joining Newcastle United on loan. Holding, however, ended up staying put and this performance against Manchester United underlined his growing importance to the Gunners. The 25-year-old was a rock at the back and helped Mikel Arteta’s side claim a valuable point as they held firm to draw 0-0. No Zlatan, no problem for AC Milan in their 2-0 victory vs. Fiorentina as the Rossoneri remain top of Serie A. ESPN FC's Janusz Michallik shares his thoughts on how Milan coped without their talisman against a cagey Fiorentina side. Michallik says the win was a "big psychological boost" for Stefano Pioli's men and believes they can continue their winning ways with their strong midfield. Michallik also praises Gianluigi Donnarumma for his goal-saving stop against Franck Ribery to keep his clean sheet. The Catalan club appears to lack its confidence from previous seasons following an embarrassing elimination to Bayern Munich and a troubled offseason in which it nearly lost its talisman.“Knowing what happened recently, we are not the top favorite,” coach Ronald Koeman said on Monday ahead of the team’s debut in this season’s competition against Hungarian club Ferencváros. “But we are a team that can go far.”Koeman arrived to put Barcelona back on track shortly after the 8-2 collapse against Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, which capped its first season without a title since 2007-08.“Barcelona always plays to win titles, in the league and in Europe, but there are other strong teams,” Koeman said. Barcelona hasn’t won the Champions League since 2015, but since then it had never embarked on a new campaign in the competition amid so much disarray. The club avoided losing Messi after he said he wanted to leave, but it continued to endure political turmoil and even financial difficulties. President Josep Bartomeu is facing a censure motion that could force him to leave his post before the end of the year. Koeman was given the task of revamping the first team, and he quickly got rid of veterans such as Luis Suárez and Ivan Rakitic, but the club failed to bring in any of the players he wanted in the transfer window. Koeman said Messi is fine despite scoring just once so far this season.“Maybe his performance could be better, but I see him happy,” Koeman said. “I see him training well and focused. I have nothing to complain about him in that sense.”He said “a bit of bad luck” has played a role in keeping the Argentina star from scoring more goals so far. Koeman also downplayed criticism of Antoine Griezmann for his recent poor
#SoccerLaduma #BundesligaConnection #Bundesliga Bayern Munich’s incredible run of winning 23 competitive matches in a row has come to an end, with the quadruple winners falling to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Hoffenheim. For the first time in 10 months, the German giants lost a football match but the result can be chalked up to fatigue, with the loss coming just three days after their UEFA Super Cup win, and without talisman striker Robert Lewandowski in the starting XI. Furthermore, they face Borussia Dortmund in the German Cup on Wednesday night, and will argue that are more focused on completing the quintuple to cap of an incredible season.
At the weekend Cherries travelled to Teeside in a performance against Middlesbrough that garnered a point, but it could have been so much more. Instead Bournemouth displayed the bare necessities on the pitch, with a lacklustre performance showing against a side that were toying with Championship relegation just two months ago. Whilst a goal for Dom ensured that our attacking talisman got off the mark in the Championship, a late equaliser from Boro left Cherries fans cursing missed opportunities, so whilst there was bitterness in Bournemouth, there was rejoicing at the Riverside, as 1000 fans inside the stadium witnesses their side picking up their first points of the season. In this podcast Sam Davis is joined by Jeff Hayward to discuss the 1-1 draw, plus we look forward to the Carabao Cup Third Round tie at Manchester City, where there could be a reunion with a certain Nathan Ake!
