Sans aucune séparation, la moindre étincelle pouvait mettre le feu entre les deux camps. Elle s'est produite dès les hymnes quand celui des visiteurs a été sifflé par tout un stade. Furieux, des Argentins, déjà échaudés par une bâche déployée sur leur secteur, ont distribué des gifles. Les Brésiliens ont répliqué, avec en plus l'intervention violente de la Police Militaire.
