HIGHLIGHTS | Lens vs Arsenal (2-1) | UEFA Champions League

We suffered our first defeat of the season, despite Gabriel Jesus giving us a first-half lead in a fervent atmosphere in Lens on Tuesday. The Brazilian finished clinically into the corner to fire us ahead against last season’s Ligue 1 runners-up, but they bounced back to score either side of the interval through Adrien Thomasson and Elye Wahi. We came close in the second-half, notably through Takehiro Tomiyasu and Reiss Nelson, but Lens battled to take the points. At the scene of our first ever Champions League game, way back in 1998, we returned to northern France for our 193rd game in the competition, but our first on the road for more than six years. For Lens, it was the first time they had hosted a Champions League match for 20 years. They created an atmosphere befitting the occasion. A huge tifo, spanning the height of both main stands, greeted the players onto the pitch at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis, and the hosts predictably started with plenty of gusto. Kevin Danso shot wide and Thomasson headed past the post before we began to settle, and we took the lead with our first shot on goal. Bukayo Saka was alive to a stray pass and moved it on to Jesus. He controlled outside the area, then took the ball on a couple of strides before planting his shot low inside the far post, giving Brice Samba no chance in the Lens goal. The Brazilian has an excellent record in the Champions League, and after also notching against PSV Eindhoven on Matchday One, this was his 22nd goal in the competition. Kai Havertz came close to doubling the lead, watching a lofted Alex Zinchenko pass all the way his shoulder onto his left boot, but his volleyed effort was straight at Samba. Starting in their meeting with us in 1998, Lens had scored in every single home match in European football over the past 25 years, and they extended that run to 34 games with a well-hit leveller. David Raya’s pass was intercepted and with our defence out of position, Wahi found space on the edge of the box. He cut the ball back to Thomasson, and the Frenchman curled his finish perfectly beyond Raya. It was the first goal we had conceded on our travels this season, and the decibel levels rocketed once again. There was further bad news when Saka was withdrawn ten minutes before the break. He was replaced by Fabio Vieira. We finished the half on the front foot though. Zinchenko found the advancing Leandro Trossard with a wonderful pass inside the full back, but the Belgian’s first touch was heavy, and the chance evaporated. Jesus had a sight of goal just before the interval, when a deep cross fell to him in space at the far post. He took his shot on the bounce, but it sailed over the bar. Havertz carved out an opening for Trossard early in the second half. He found him near the byline and the Belgian sat his defender down with a deft turn, but his tame shot didn’t trouble Samba. Then came one chance for each side in quick succession midway through the half – one taken, one not. First Odegaard’s corner beat everyone in the box, and landed on the boot of the arriving Tomiyasu, but his fiercely struck first-time effort was batted away by Samba. Either side of the keeper and we would have been ahead. As it was, Lens went up the other end and took the lead with another crisp finish. Przemyslaw Frankowski got away in the right wing, pulled his cross back for Wahi, who smashed home. Mikel Arteta responded by sending on Emile Smith Rowe, Reiss Nelson, Ben White and Eddie Nketiah, Smith Rowe had a 20-yard drive parried and Nelson had an effort cleared off the line, but we couldn’t force the equaliser. #arsenal Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Emile Smith Rowe, Vivianne Miedema, Gabriel Jesus, Alex Zinchenko, Leah Williamson, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Aaron Ramsdale, Beth Mead, Ben White and more. Martin Odegaard’s penalty was enough to beat Crystal Palace and record back-to-back wins at the start of the campaign, despite us finishing with 10 men. The captain stroked home a spot-kick on 53 minutes after Eddie Nketiah was brought down in the box by Sam Johnstone, before Takehiro Tomiyasu was dismissed for two yellow cards - our first dismissal in the Premier League since May 2022. However Mikel Arteta’s team clung onto the points thanks to a solid rearguard display from that point onwards to kick off the season with six points from six. HIGHLIGHTS | Arsenal vs Manchester City (1-1, 4-1 on pens) | Trossard equalises in stoppage time!
HIGHLIGHTS | Arsenal vs Manchester City (1-1, 4-1 on pens) | Trossard equalises in stoppage time!

Late drama at Wembley saw us clinch our 17th Community Shield by beating Manchester City 4-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes. An excellent first half from Mikel Arteta’s team, featuring three debutants in Declan Rice, Jurrien Timber and Kai Havertz saw them do everything but score, with the latter twice forcing Stefan Ortega into saves with his feet to keep a lacklustre City in the game. But after the break, Pep Guardiola’s team improved and they grabbed the only goal when substitute Cole Palmer curled home a shot on 77 minutes to seemingly hand City the silverware, but in the 11th minute of second-half stoppage-time, Leandro Trossard saw a shot strike Manuel Akanji and trickle into the net to set up a penalty shootout. After Kevin de Bruyne hit the crossbar and Aaron Ramsdale saved from Rodri, Fabion Vieria fired home the winning kick to cap a dramatic comeback and allow Martin Odegaard to hoist the silverware. A hugely encouraging first half saw us enjoy the better chances and look the more dangerous in attack, while nullifying City to a couple of half-chances. The reigning Treble holders had the first efforts of the game when Rodri saw a low shot blocked by Declan Rice and dribble just wide of the base of the post, and the same fate befell Julian Alvarez soon after. But we grew into the game as it developed and on 25 minutes we carved out our first great opportunity when Ben White cut inside on the right and picked out Havertz in the box. The German spun and got a shot away which was saved by the outstretched boot of Ortega, and then Gabriel Martinelli’s rebound was blocked by the chest of John Stones. Havertz was enjoying his first outing in an Arsenal shirt as he regularly provided an outlet at the spearhead of our attack, and his physical presence caused the City defence plenty of issues. He came even closer to getting his first Gunners goal when we again found joy down the right through Bukayo Saka whose cutback from the byline allowed Havertz to pull the trigger, but he was again denied by the reaction of Ortega. Guardiola’s team’s frustrations were summed up when Rodri attempted an audacious effort from the halfway line but failed to catch Aaron Ramsdale out, as the champions went in fortunate not to be behind. Our dominance in possession initially continued after the break, but the opening 20 minutes after the restart saw chances dry up for both teams, although John Stones forced Ramsdale to make a good stop when he met a corner with his head. The lack of attacking prowess saw Guardiola opt to withdraw the quiet Erling Haaland for Cole Palmer, and the youngster was found in space in the box midway through the second half but an excellent block by Jurrien Timber snuffed the chance out. But on 77 minutes we weren’t so lucky the second time around when the same man got a similar opportunity from a similar area. After City had countered through Phil Foden, a fortunate rebound allowed Kevin de Bruyne - so often the thorn in our side - to find the young attacker managed who curled the ball around the outstretched Ramsdale to hand his team the lead. With the lead in their grasp, City began to turn the screw and only two great stops by Ramsdale kept us in contention; firstly staying big when Foden was found in close range and managed to divert his attempt, and from the resulting corner he managed to shovel away Rodri’s near post header. During a lengthy period of second-half stoppage-time, we pushed hard for an equaliser, and in the 101st minute we forced a corner and Trossard tried his luck from the edge of the area, and saw his shot cannon off Akanji and deceive Ortega to hand us a shot at glory via a penalty shootout.
