HIGHLIGHTS | Arsenal vs AS Monaco (1-1) | Emirates Cup | Nketiah

We rounded off pre-season by beating Monaco 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, with Gabriel netting the all-important spot-kick to seal the silverware. Arsene Wenger was the guest of honour on the night as two of his former clubs went head to head, and French international Youssouf Fofana opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark, however captain for the day Eddie Nketiah managed to restore parity just before the break when he converted a Gabriel Martinelli corner. Another 45 minutes failed to separate the sides, meaning a shootout was required to decide the destiny of the trophy and we managed to convert all five of our efforts, with Aaron Ramsdale saving from Takumi Minamino to ensure we lifted the trophy for the seventh time. A packed house were treated to first Emirates Stadium starts in our colours for Jurrien Timber and Declan Rice, but proceedings took a while to warm up with Aaron Ramsdale’s low save from an Aleksandr Golovin shot the only thing for the 60,000 in attendance to get excited by in the opening quarter. Martinelli was looking sharp however, and the Brazilian was involved in all our best moments of the opening 45 minutes, including an intricate passing move that involved Rice, Fabio Vieira and Nketiah, but the striker was in an offside position when he headed narrowly over. Nketiah went close again after Martinelli tricked his way past right-back Vanderson and got to the byline but the opportunity went begging, and on 31 minutes we slipped behind when Vanderson found himself at the other end, and his cross-shot was diverted into the top corner by the head of Fofana, leaving Ramsdale helpless. The setback seemed to sharpen us up, and we found ourselves in the attacking third much more regularly in the final stages of the half, creating a flurry of chances that would see us get back on level terms before the break. On 42 minutes Takehiro Tomiyasu found Rice on the edge of the box who nudged it past two defenders to seemingly look destined to score, but an excellent sliding challenge by Guillermo Maripin blocked his shot. Then from the resulting corner, Tomiyasu’s powerful header was excellently pushed over his crossbar by Philipp Koln, but the opposition shot-stopper was powerless to prevent us scoring seconds later. Another Martinelli flag kick was sent towards the back post, and Nketiah ghosted between two defenders to create the simple task of tucking the ball into the net to mark his moment with the armband in style. Arteta opted not to change his line-up at the interval, but his troops started sluggishly and were fortunate not to fall behind again when Caio Henrique sped down the left and centred for Wissam Ben Yedder who slid in and struck the post, with the rebound ricocheting off the back of Ramsdale but trickled the right side of the post. Just after the hour mark the pack was shuffled and amongst seven changes Kai Havertz was brought on for his first taste of the Emirates as an Arsenal player, and two other replacements went close soon after. Leandro Trossard scampered through a hole in the defence searching for his fourth goal of the summer but drove the ball straight at Kohn, with Martin Odegaard curling over from the edge of the area as he attempted his trademark strike. But the Emirates Cup remained in the balance and only a flying Ramsdale save prevented Monaco going back ahead when Myron Boadu blasted goalwards, while at the other end a decent Vieira downwards volley had to be tipped over by Kohn, meaning penalties would be needed to decide the victor. #arsenal Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Emile Smith Rowe, Vivianne Miedema, Gabriel Jesus, Alex Zinchenko, Leah Williamson, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Aaron Ramsdale, Beth Mead, Ben White and more. HIGHLIGHTS | Arsenal v FC Barcelona (5-3) | Saka, Havertz, Trossard x2, Vieira

We twice came from behind to ensure a winning end to our summer US tour. Inside the magnificent, sold out SoFi Stadium in LA, Barcelona took the lead early on through Robert Lewandowski, before Bukayo Saka drew us level. Saka then missed a penalty in an eventful first-half, before the Spaniards retook the lead through a deflected Raphinha free-kick. Kai Havertz was in the right place at the far post to turn home Martin Odegaard’s header to level things up again before the break and we deservedly went ahead when Leandro Trossard arrowed home his shot from just inside the area. Trossard scored his second, finishing from Kieran Tierney's cross, before Ferran Torres briefly brought Barcelona back into it. But Fabio Vieira ensured the scoreline had the gloss we deserved with a stunner late on. "I’ve always been a fan of Arsenal!" | Jurrien Timber's first Arsenal interview | Part 1
"I’ve always been a fan of Arsenal!" | Jurrien Timber's first Arsenal interview | Part 1

As a youngster at Ajax, Jurrien Timber was asked what his ambitions were for the next five years. He replied that he wanted to be in the Ajax first team and then leave for England or Spain. When pressed on what club he would like to join, he simply stated: ‘I’ve always been a fan of Arsenal.’ Today he realised that dream, becoming our second signing of the summer after starring for Ajax and the Dutch national team last season. Explaining his love of the club, Jurrien said: “It was because of my brothers. They were always Arsenal fans, and I just loved seeing Arsenal play. They had big players, the way they played, the style. I just love the club. “I had this from a young age, but my brothers kind of put that in me. I liked watching Robin van Persie of course, and Thierry Henry. They were my favourite players.” The 22-year-old defender, who made more than 120 appearances for the Ajax first team over the past three years, arrives with a burgeoning reputation, and is delighted to be making his first move out of Dutch football. “There are a couple of players [who have come here from Ajax], but there have been not a lot. So I think it's special to be here as an Ajax player and it’s special that they notice you and they see me as the player I am. “I’m really excited, especially now I'm here. Everyone is so nice and you can see it's a big club. I'm excited to play for this beautiful club, and I can't wait to start, and to see the fans obviously in the stadium.” Comfortable playing either centrally or the right side of defence, Jurrien said he doesn’t have a preference where he operates, and thinks his style will be perfectly suited to Arsenal and the Premier League. “I think that I'm lucky to say that I can play as a central defender, as a right full-back, sometimes even on the midfield,” he explained. “So I think that's a good thing and I need to keep that. “I just like the way Arsenal play, is a bit similar to Ajax’s style and I like to play from the back. I can see a lot of similarities, especially in the way Arsenal and Ajax want to play." #arsenal Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Emile Smith Rowe, Vivianne Miedema, Gabriel Jesus, Alex Zinchenko, Leah Williamson, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Aaron Ramsdale, Beth Mead, Ben White and more. HIGHLIGHTS | Arsenal vs Watford (1-1) | Pre-season friendly
HIGHLIGHTS | Arsenal vs Watford (1-1) | Pre-season friendly

We kicked off our preparations for the 2023/24 season with a 1-1 draw with training ground neighbours Watford at London Colney on Saturday, thanks to a second-half equaliser from Marquinhos. Mikel Arteta named a strong starting XI, consisting of the players who returned to training at the start of the week, before turning to his youth players in the second-half. We had an early chance to take the lead in the behind-closed-doors friendly, but a dangerous cross into the box from Reiss Nelson ended up in the hands of Watford keeper Daniel Bachmann. The visitors responded, pressing high up the pitch, but 17-year-old midfielder Myles Lewis-Skelly was positioned well to halt Ken Sema’s burst into the box. Late in the half we had a couple of chances to take the lead. First Eddie Nketiah found himself through on goal, but the striker was denied by a last-gasp challenge from the covering Watford defender. Not long after, a low driven pass from Gabriel through the middle, fell to the feet of Nketiah but his shot was blocked. From the resulting corner, Leandro Trossard’s delivery into the box caused confusion, before it was eventually cleared for a throw in. We were made to pay when Watford broke the deadlock just before the whistle - Ismael Kone on the scoresheet. With building up fitness naturally a key priority, the manager made wholesale changes at the break, with nine players replaced. A much younger side opened the second half with an early opportunity to equalise through Mika Biereth, but the 20-year-old striker’s shot on goal was comfortably dealt with. However we drew level 10 minutes after the restart. Rob Holding started the move, finding Biereth, whose pass freed Amario Cozier-Duberry. The winger’s shot was saved but only pushed into the path of Brazilian forward Marquinhos, who coolly slotted home the rebound. Both teams contested fiercely for the winner, but the game ended in a 1-1 draw. Starting XI: Arthur Okonkwo, Ben White, Gabriel, Rob Holding, Cedric, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Leandro Trossard, Reiss Nelson, Mauro Bandeira, Gabriel Jesus, Eddie Nketiah. Subs: James Hillson, Marquinhos, Mika Biereth, Amario Cozier-Duberry, Jimi Gower, Jack Henry-Francis, Alex Kirk, Brooke Norton-Cuffy, Ethan Nwaneri, Ismail Ouland-M’hand, Charles Sagoe Jr, Lino Sousa, Reuell Walters.
