Fifteen first half minutes in which we conceded twice and had a man sent off proved to be our undoing on a night when nothing went our way in the north London derby. After an even start, Spurs took the lead from a questionable penalty, and doubled the advantage moments after Rob Holding was shown a debatable red card. It was always an uphill battle after that, and Tottenham’s third at the start of the second half ended any hopes of a comeback. With the stakes so high for both sides, predictably, the game started at 100 miles an hour. Both sides were struggling to keep the ball but we had half chances through Eddie Nketiah and Bukayo Saka. Gabriel Martinelli was released by a wonderful pass from Takehiro Tomiyasu, but his cut back to Martin Odegaard was snuffled out by the home defence. Just as it looked like we were starting to settle, Spurs were awarded a soft penalty. Cedric was adjudged to have bundled over Heung-Min Son at the far post. Referee Paul Tierney pointed to the spot, despite Arsenal protests. Harry Kane sent Aaron Ramsdale the wrong way to open the scoring. Moments later a sliding block from Tomiyasu denied Kane a second when he worked the ball on to his right foot in the area. Just after the half hour the referee made another huge call that went against us. This time Rob Holding, who had already been booked, was shown a second yellow card for a clash with Son. Replays were inconclusive as to whether the defender had moved his arm in to Son, or just stood his ground. Either way, we were down to 10 men, and soon down by two goals too. Kane doubled his tally, tapping in at the far post when a corner was flicked on. We needed to regroup, and quickly. We reshaped at the back and started to attack the hosts again. Nketiah had a shot tipped over after a searing run from Saka, and Odegaard failed to make clean contact when the ball fell to him on the edge of the area. There looked to be chances for us if we could get at the Spurs defence, but our night from bad to worse right at the start of the second half. Kane turned Gabriel inside the box and the ball fell to Son to tap home. The next chance fell our way, Martinelli the architect again, but Saka’s goalbound shot was blocked. Not surprisingly though, it was Spurs who had most of the ball, and Ramsdale made a fine save to deny Emerson Royal on the hour mark. Son screwed a shot over from close range, while at the other end Odegaard shot straight at Lloris, but the game was over as a contest by then. Despite the huge sense of frustration at the final whistle, our fate remains in our hands. We are a point clear with two games to go. It’s still all to play for. We secured three crucial points in our penultimate game of the Women’s Super League season on Wednesday, defeating Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 at Emirates Stadium. Beth Mead opened the scoring before Caitlin Foord struck twice in the second half, leaving us just one point behind league leaders Chelsea going into the final weekend of the 2021/22 campaign. After starting the game with high intensity to our attacking play, Mead opened the scoring after being picked out by an incisive Leah Williamson pass, driving forward to the edge of the area before firing into the bottom corner. Tottenham came close to an equaliser almost instantly after via a chaotic goalmouth scramble, but we soon regained control of the tie and kept the visitors at arms length, with Vivianne Miedema and Foord coming close to adding a second. Following the break, we continued to show maturity in our play as we balanced risk and reward with each attack, and we were eventually rewarded for our patience with Foord sliding in at the back post to convert Miedema’s delivery. Our third and final goal of the evening was the best of the bunch, though, with Foord picking up the ball on the left wing and cutting inside, before curling a stunning effort into the top right corner. We dominated the game from start to finish, but deep into stoppage time, Tottenham were awarded a penalty after Angela Addison went down inside the area. Addison stepped up to pull one back for the visitors, but her low effort struck the post, meaning Manuela Zinsberger is still yet to concede a penalty since joining the club. #arsenal #arsenalwomen Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, Vivianne Miedema, Nicolas Pepe, Alexandre Lacazette, Leah Williamson, Bernd Leno, Nikita Parris, Tobin Heath, Mana Iwabuchi, Jordan Nobbs, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Aaron Ramsdale, Beth Mead, Ben White, Thomas Partey and more. Eddie Nketiah’s first-half brace was eventually enough for us to claim all three points, but it was far from straight forward, despite Leeds being reduced to ten men from the 27th minute. Our striker scored twice in the opening ten minutes, and we looked to be in total control, especially after Luke Ayling was dismissed for a lunge on Gabriel Martinelli. But Diego Llorente’s second-half goal from a corner ensured a nervous finale. We started like a train though. Nketiah created the opening goal out of absolutely nothing. Illan Meslier pondered on a back pass just too long, Nketiah pounced, dispossessed the keeper and bundled the ball over the line. The Emirates was bouncing, and within minutes Nketiah dialled up the atmosphere even more with his second. Gabriel Martinelli deserves a huge amount of the credit for the way he hassled and harried away on the left wing, broke into the box and cut the ball back for Nketiah to sweep home first time. We were 2-0 up inside ten minutes, and looking to maintain the frantic early pace. Martinelli swung in another deep cross but it was just beyond Nketiah on the stretch. Cedric – playing at right back with Takehiro Tomiyasu shifted over to the left – was next to try his luck, firing over after Martin Odegaard’s cut back just evaded Nketiah. A wonderful first-time pass from Odegaard set up Saka inside the box, but his powerful shot was straight at Meslier. Leeds were reduced to 10 men when Luke Ayling was red carded for a reckless foul on Martinelli on the byline. The former Arsenal youth player went in two-footed on the Brazilian, and referee Chris Kavanagh’s initial booking was overturned after VAR intervention. In the ensuing melee Raphinha was booked – you could start to see why the visitors had set a new record for most yellow cards in a Premier League season. We were starting to camp out in the Leeds half. Martinelli squeezed a shot right across the line before Odegaard had a free kick cleared from underneath the cross bar by Diego Llorente. We continued to dominate after the break. Martinelli twisted and turned his marker before shooting at Meslier at the near post, while Nketiah had a header from a corner blocked. From Leeds’ first shot of the game they got back into it. Junior Firpo flicked on a corner and Llorente was unmarked at the far post to score past Aaron Ramsdale. All of a sudden from a position of total control, there were now some nerves around the Emirates. Leeds – throwing everything at the game now in their relegation fight – sent Meslier up for a late corner. We cleared it to Pepe but he couldn’t get it under control on the halfway line with the goal vacant. Ramsdale had to make a late save from Rodrigo, as incredibly we were hanging on for the points. There was no little amount of relief when the final whistle went. Four points clear, three games to go. The quest for European qualification goes on. #arsenal #nketiah #arteta Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, Vivianne Miedema, Nicolas Pepe, Alexandre Lacazette, Leah Williamson, Bernd Leno, Nikita Parris, Tobin Heath, Mana Iwabuchi, Jordan Nobbs, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Aaron Ramsdale, Beth Mead, Ben White, Thomas Partey and more.
