Dafabet Warriors captain Sinethemba Qeshile after 14-run win over VKB Knights Raynard van Tonder struck the highest score of the Betway T20 Challenge thus far but it was not enough as the VKB Knights were beaten by the Dafabet Warriors in their final group phase match at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium in Durban on Thursday. The former South Africa Under-19 captain plundered an unbeaten 81 off 57 balls (6 fours, 3 sixes) in a chase of 158 that ended with the Central Franchise finishing on 143 all out from their 20 overs, handing their Eastern Cape opponents victory by 14 runs. The Knights needed to win the game with a bonus point to stand a chance of reaching the play-offs, but instead it was the Warriors who walked away with the four points that took them up to third on the table. They now occupy the final qualification spot and must hope the Momentum Multiply Titans are beaten by leaders the Hollywoodbets Dolphins if they want to progress to the business end of the tournament, which is being played in a bio-secure environment (BSE) in Durban. In what was a high-stakes game on the east coast, Allan Donald's won the toss and chose to field first, although they struggled to keep their opponents in check early on. Jon-Jon Smuts (33) and Gihahn Cloete (22) gave their side a fast start by putting on 53 for the first wicket inside the powerplay overs, before Mbulelo Budaza (3/18) and Shaun von Berg (2/27) excellently dragged things back. They took out both batsmen and Matthew Kleinveldt (2/17) ran through the middle order to leave the Warriors limping on 66 for four. Lesiba Ngoepe managed to change the tempo again with his 41 off 30 balls, while some lusty late blows by Anrich Nortje (14*) and Ayabulela Gqamane (15) lifted the Robin Petersen's side to 157 for eight. For the Knights to have any chance of getting through they needed to score the runs in 16 overs, but they suffered some big blows early on to all but end their chances. They lost six wickets in the first 10 overs, including the key one of Pite van Biljon (5), as Mthiwekhaya Nabe (3/19), Anrich Nortje (2/17) and Marco Jansen (2/30) all struck. That left them on a dire 67 for six. However, Van Tonder, who beat his previous best score of 76* for Free State against Gauteng at Benoni in 2019/20, refused to throw in the towel. Sisanda Magala, 5/20 in 4 overs vs VKB Knights A career-best five-for by Sisanda Magala paved the way for the Imperial Lions to climb top of the Betway T20 Challenge table with a comfortable eight-wicket victory over the VKB Knights in Durban on Tuesday. The right-arm seamer grabbed five for 20 at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium as Wandile Gwavu's charges ruthlessly dismissed their opponents for just 106, before Reeza Hendricks (47) and Temba Bavuma (53* off 47 balls, 3 fours, 1 six) did the bulk of the scoring to help reach the target with 11 deliveries to spare. It was the third successive win for the Lions and one that vaulted them to the top of the table with a maximum of 12 points, the same number as the Hollywoodbets Dolphins. Defeat for the Knights all but ends their interest in the competition. They will need to win their final match against the Dafabets Warriors on Thursday and hope several other results go in their favour to have any chance of reaching the play-offs. However, day five's afternoon match was all about the Lions and their clinical display on the east coast. After the Knights won the toss and batted, they were given no chance by their opposition pack of bowlers. Beuran Hendricks (2/21) removed openers Patrick Kruger (2) and Jacques Snyman (6), with Raynard van Tonder (6) dismissed by Magala in between. That left the Central Franchise on 15 for three early on, before the dependable Pite van Biljon tried to rebuild with 15. But both the captain and Grant Mokoena (8) fell to excellent Aaron Phangiso (2/14) in the same over to leave the opposition in further strife on 40 for five. Farhaan Behardien (28) top-scored for his side and together with Ferisco Adams (23) managed to at least get their side to 100, but Magala proved too good for the Knights' tail – their innings ending with the final delivery of their 20 overs. It was the best figures by the 30-year-old and beat his previous best haul of five for 28 for the Warriors against his current team at Port Elizabeth in 2015/16. Rising star Gerald Coetzee (2/19), handed his first game by coach Allan Donald, then rattled the Lions early on by removing Ryan Rickelton (0) and Dwaine Pretorius (2). Set a mighty 168 for victory – the highest score of the 2020/21 tournament thus far – the Central Franchise needed 19 from the final over, and three balls in they looked down and out after only managing to get three of them. But the bowler Ziyaad Abrahams sent down successive length deliveries that were plundered for sixes by Pretorius, with the seamer then overstepping to concede a no-ball, one of a whopping 27 extras, that was subsequently lashed away for four sending the Knights camp into delirium. On the flip side, their Cape opponents could not believe what had unfolded especially after their fine batting display earlier in the day when Zubayr Hamza recorded his career-best score and the competition’s highest score to date, a blistering 77 off 49 balls (10 fours, 2 sixes). That total, though, was not enough – the Knights going on to register their first win and one that left the Cobras winless. At the start, it was Ashwell Prince’s side who won the toss and batted at an overcast Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium. Hamza and Tony de Zorzi (24) put on 39 for the first wicket, before Shaun von Berg’s (2/23) double blow jolted their progress. However, an 88-run third-wicket stand put the Cobras in complete control as Hamza, who went on record his second career 50, and Kyle Verreynne (45) went on the rampage. They eventually posted what looked to be a strong 167 for five. An ill-disciplined start by the bowlers then saw the Knights race to 40 in just over three overs, before their opponents pulled things back slightly to leave the score on 56 for two in the seventh over. But Pite van Biljon (29) and Raynard van Tonder (42) put on a 63-run third-wicket partnership that helped keep their side in the mix. Siyabonga Mahima (2/31) and Abrahams (2/41) then helped the Cobras clawback, but they failed to hold their nerve when it counted most, allowing Pretorius to seal a priceless win.
