An Ohio State Buckeyes vs Purdue Boilermakers postgame fan reaction and if I'm being honest, Ohio State did NOT impress me. Sure, C.J. Stroud put up numbers (31/38 for 361 yards, 5 touchdowns and 0 interceptions). Sure, his top receivers balled out with 97% of the receiving yardage gained: Jaxon Smith-Njigba with 9 receptions, 139 yards and 1 touchdown, Garrett Wilson with 10 receptions for 126 yards and 3 touchdowns, and Chris Olave with 9 receptions for 85 yards and 1 touchdown. And sure, the ground game did it's thing as well: Miyan Williams with 14 carries for 117 yards and TreVeyon Henderson with 13 carries for 98 yards and 2 touchdowns. But at the end of the day, Ryan Day continues to have BIG problems on the defensive side of the football. If they're not giving up a ton of passing yards, they're giving up a ton of rushing yards. If they're not giving up a ton of rushing yards, they're giving up a ton of passing yards. All it takes is for one team, the way Oregon did, to take advantage of that and turn yardage into points. Purdue was not that team! Aidan O'Connell balled out, going 40/52 for 390 yards, 4 touchdowns and 0 interceptions against a struggling Buckeyes defense. The running attack averaged 4.8 yards per carry on 19 carries, but had to abandon it completely being down by so much, so soon. It was the costly mistakes that were self-inflicted that made this one a snoozer from the jump, though, and those mistakes, in my opinion, will not be made when Ohio State comes to the Big House in Ann Arbor. The Boilermakers shanked a punt terribly early in the game, fumbled on a handoff, and could not jump on a kickoff, allowing OSU to pounce all over them not even two quarters into things. Here is my reaction to the performance of both teams in this matchup.
On the out of bounds play, the Spurs run a 2-3 zone. But check out this phenomenal play from the Pacers. Keep an eye on Chris Duarte, and Justin Holiday as they’re going to set 2 screens on the inside for Wannamaker to drive. Not the cleanest execution but it does enough for the backside to collapse, leaving an open look for Torey Craig and he swishes it from downtown. Here’s how this great play design looked at full speed and no wonder why they got 3 points out of it. A lot of games last night so let’s check out some more interesting actions. What up everybody, my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it. The Sixers forgot that the most dangerous player is often the inbounder. So we see C.J. Mccollum is gonna set a screen for Powell to get a full head of steam towards the basket. At the same time, the pass goes to Covington who will have a better angle to find him under the basket. This turns out to be a much easier score for Portland but on the replay we can see that if Philly switched and Powell couldn’t get it, this flows into a screen for C.J. up top and he would have a 3 point shot. It’s very often that teams have multiple options on out of bounds plays, and we see that being the case right here with this design from the Portland Trail Blazers. Moving on. The Celtics get the ball to Williams outside, and from there we have a screen and a handoff for Brown on the outside curl. So at this moment, since Lavine is trailing, and Jaylen has a driving lane, Vucevic needs to step in and stop that. Nice roll by Williams and this is a great position to be in. But the pass gets deflected so the initial advantage is lost, however great awareness by the big man as he flings a pass to the corner, the swing to Smart and he has a wide open three, that goes in. Once again check out how they created the advantage in the first place, nice effort by Chicago to try and extend this possession as much as possible, but at the end Boston still scores. Next up it’s Nikola Jokic with an insane pass to the corner. As we stop it right here, you see that there are 4 Grizzlies defenders who could intercept the ball on its way to Gordon. But this is Jokic we’re talking about so dude fires away a one handed slingshot across the entire court and defense on the money for Aaron Gordon buuuut unfortunately he misses it. Still I had to put this one in, for you to see it even tho it didn’t end in a score and it wasn’t a play call. Speaking of that, the next few are not necessarily designed plays, but the ball moved as seamlessly as the coach would draw it up. Sabonis and Holiday execute this to perfection. We got the pass and the high pick, Holiday goes up for the shot, at the last second drops it to Sabonis, back to Holiday on the drive, back to Sabonis, the turn and the lefty hook shot. This was amazing. Look at the ball bouncing almost like it’s in a pinball machine. Incredible 2 man game. Similar to that, Quickley and Topin run the high pick and roll, but the Raptors close the driving lane, so the 2 Knicks didn’t stop moving and went straight to it once again. Got a better angle and Obi Topin finishes with a layup. Here’s how that looked at full speed as the 2 young players show their great on court connection. And finally it’s the Nuggets again as they run this in a free flowing way with a lot of passing and movement, penetrating and kicking, to finally end up with a wide open look for Bones Hyland who hits the 3. Once again, check out how that looked on this beautiful Denver Nuggets possession. Let me know in the comments which was your favorite. That’s it for now, subscribe and talk to you in the next one. Peace out.
The college football game between Michigan and Michigan State had an exciting ending as Michigan State rallied from down by 16 points to win the game. Michigan led 30-14 in the third quarter, but two Michigan State touchdowns allowed them to tie the game early in the fourth quarter. Michigan responded with a field goal and got the ball back with seven minutes left. They then fumbled on a handoff exchange and Michigan scored a touchdown with five minutes left to take a 37-33 lead. Michigan got the ball back in the final minutes but threw a game losing interception and Michigan State held on for a 37-33 victory. Alcorn State wide receiver LeCharles Pringle receives a handoff and runs 17 yards for a touchdown vs. Texas Southern, 10/23/21.
SUBSCRIBE To the second channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0POGuktAlHvY2TkCXNalLg/videos The NBA is back and even in the preseason we got some clever play calls like this misdirection from the Clippers. You see the screen and the handoff here for Luke Kennard on the curl. And as the help defender is sliding down to help on the potential drive, we got a crosscourt pass to the corner, and everyone on the court is focused there as you can see. Leaving the lane wide open for Luke. He gets it down low, the fake, finds the open man and the dunk. This was absolutely beautiful and we gotta see it one more time in full speed. So let’s check out the most interesting plays from the beginning of the preseason. What up everybody, my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it. Look at all the motion here from Golden State. We got a fake screen up top, while Bjelica comes out on the Iguodala pick. So now with the defender trailing him, they got all the advantage forcing the Blazers to collapse. And at this moment we got an open man in the near corner, open shooter up top, and 1 in the far corner. Nemanja decides to sling it to Oto Porter and he knocks it down. It’s amazing how many options the Golden State Warriors got on this play. And we got a few quick and sneaky executions. First up, on this high pick and roll, as the sixers are starting to attack, you see the defense is spread out. So watch Furkan Korkmaz here, with the fake drive to the baseline which gets his defender off of him and he gets a clean look for this 3 and it goes in. Not really a designed play of course but I like how Korkmaz found a way to get open. Then we got this out of bounds play, Malik Beasley gets a double screen on his way to the corner, and as the defender is trailing him, he would have an open shot, which forces the help. Jordan Mclaughlin- the inbounder, cuts to the basket and you can see everyone is on the perimeter and there’s no defense in the paint, so he’s all alone for this finish. I feel like he was one of the options on this play and it wasn’t just his intuition to cut, because in my opinion the paint was so open with a reason. For them to get such an easy layup. Let me show you a savvy veteran move by Al Horford. In this scramble situation, Schroeder notices that Brown is going back inside so he throws the lob. Horford also knows that and just slides in to kinda screen and protect Jaylen as he seals to opposing players. Brown gets the ball and easily lays it in. Again, not how they drew it up, but I love the quick thinking by big Al to help his team. I always like when shooters get some screening action from under the basket, so Max Strus right here gets 1 and runs away from Lou, and as Williams tries to catch from the inside, we got another pick, and this bump is enough for Strus to get an open look and drill it from downtown. And finally, Minnesota had another nice execution on this play. Initially Edwards gets a high screen, but instead of attacking, he turns back towards Russell. The big man sets the initial pick, but then continues on for another one for D’Angello, who comes out and gets the pass. With the defender on his back, this is now a 2 on 1 situation, and Nas Reid is awarded for his effort and gets the finish inside. It all happens quickly in 1 fluid motion, so shoutout Timberwolves for this nice play. Hey do you need a longer NBA video to get you through your lunch or when you’re on your toilet? Ya boy has a second channel where I talk about the games that I watch. In today’s video I tell you what I saw from the Celtics, the Heat and Minnesota. Download the Sleeper app: https://go.slpr.link/heatcheck When you think about the player who runs the most in a game, you probably think of Steph Curry. And you wouldn’t be wrong for that. I mean, look at all of this movement. This is how I opened a video that I made 2 seasons ago, to really illustrate my point. But he wasn’t number 1 then, and he’s not at the top this season either. Stick around and I promise you’ll be surprised by some of the names on this list. What up everybody, my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it. At number 10 we got Jamal Murray, who although got injured towards the end of the season, when he was healthy, he was all over the floor in that dynamic Denver Nuggets system. You can see him running from one side to the other, and getting those handoffs from Jokic on the perimeter which is one of the staples in their offense. Number 9 and 8 we got a pair of teammates for the Charlotte Hornets. They were one of the surprising teams of the season and even tho Hayward got injured as well midway through the season, we’ll include him here. The thing about having these 2 guys in the top 10 is probably the fact that Hornets as a team play fast, attractive basketball, and run up and down the floor, so this may have more to do with the style of play for this team. I love what they do and I’m looking forward to seeing this young team develop next season as well. Funny thing is that next up we got another pair of teammates. And a big surprise to me seeing this player in the top 10. This is a shocker to me, Julius Randle- as a big guy at number 7 on this list. But when you think that he was the primary, and at times the only offensive solution for the Knicks this year, that should explain it a bit. Balling out throughout the entire season is how Julius won the most improved player award as well. And with that he earned himself a new 4 year 117 million dollar contract from the Knicks. So the front office, and myself as a Knicks fan will be expecting the same type of commitment. And at number 6 I can definitely understand seeing R.J. Barret high up on this list since his whole game is based on effort. He runs in transition, attacks the basket, cuts when he doesn’t have the ball in his hands, and most importantly, R.J. is often assigned to guard some of the best players on opposing teams. So while he has a long way to go in terms of justifying the expectations and his high draft position, I always enjoy his energy, and effort that he brings to the team. At number 5 we got Pascal Siakam. And similarly to R.J. We already know about Spicy P and his motor. Siakam was in the top 10 last season as well, that’s just the way he plays. Although he didn’t show us the same progression in his overall game, his heart and his passion have always been there and the Nick Nurse system is such that it involves a lot of movement so I don’t wanna spoil anything but we might see another Raptor here. Next up is another big man. Domantas Sabonis. And as unconventional as it is seeing a big man on this list, let alone so high up, I did make a video about him earlier in the season and I talked about how he has a great handle and often runs the break for Indiana going coast to coast transforming defense into offense. And talking about progression, look at the year to year improvement for Domantas, literally every single one, ultimately getting to 20.3/12.0 and 6.3 for this season. Absolutely amazing, and you definitely don’t do that without hard work. That’s how we got him here as well. Zach Lavine has been in the top 5 on this list for the last 3 years. His superhuman athleticism allows him to be everywhere on the court and he uses that. Combined with the fact that the Bulls have gone only as far as he took them and relied solely on his production is pretty much how he’s constantly on here. So let’s see how much that changes now with the new additions and a beefed up roster. At number 2, Another guy that- as Jalen Rose would say his success is more because of his will, rather than his skill. Harrison Barnes is pretty much always guarding the best opposing player so there’s a lot of battling and he’s got the highest mileage defensively. Understandably so. The physicality and determination is part of his game both offensively as well as on defense. And you could definitely see that on these clips. So that’s how we got him at number 2 And finally, at number 1, Fred Van Vleet with just a few feet more than Barnes, takes the crown as the player who ran the most last season. This is pretty much in Van Vleet’s DNA, this is exactly how he got his 4 year, 85 million dollar contract. By playing super hard, every single possession, and yeah hitting some big shots as well of course. As I mentioned, part of the reason could also be the system of Nick Nurse and both offensive and defensive schemes that require discipline, effort and quickness.
The Clippers had success with the zone in game 5 so they started off with it again. However, Phoenix was expecting it and, check out the response this time. Crowder cuts along the middle creating the misdirection, all the attention is right here, but at the same time, Bridges takes off to the basket and gets a back screen from the big man, and you can already see it happening. The lob and the dunk. Next possession, we got the screen up top, allowing Chris Paul to penetrate in the middle and he kicks it to the corner. The pass is not perfect but a good catch by Crowder, fires and knocks down the three. The Suns started off blazing hot from downtown in the first quarter forcing LA to switch to a man to man defense and with that neutralizing the advantage that they had last game. And that’s only the beginning of this story, one that finally had a happy ending for CP3. What up everybody, my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it. The type of defense didn’t matter for Devin Booker in terms of his approach for this game. He was going to attack at all costs. You could see him early on pushing in transition, and either going all the way to the basket, or stopping at his favorite spot right here at the elbow for the pull up and the swish. Booker and the Suns didn’t wanna allow the Clippers to set up their defense, and that worked extremely well for them early on. In the half court however, all the looks that Devin got, involved movement. Right here, he starts at the elbow, and great maneuvering going under the screen, leaving Beverley trailing behind as he goes on the outside. So there is no stopping as he catches the ball, rather going straight back to that right elbow where he fires and hits the jumper. Again, starts off ball at the wing, great handoff by Payne stopping Batum on the chase. Book goes around the Ayton pick and is all alone for this three pointer. You know that he’s going to punish the Clippers. Pretty much the same play in the second half. The handoff, the big man is waiting here, but actually slips the screen this time. So now you can see we got a 2 on 1 situation, Cousins leaves a lot of room for this floater and of course it goes in. And once again, only this time it’s contested way better but Devin is already in a nice rhythm so even the good defense doesn’t make a difference on this possession as we got another floater. And, I criticized Deandre the last game for the lack of aggression, so you can see him sealing the smaller defenders inside the paint and actively looking for the ball. As he should be. I mean, there’s no way that this small lineup that Los Angeles had on the court could contain him. I still think that this is not enough touches. Dude went 8/10 from the field. That’s 80%. Let’s try to see if he can go double that, 16 for 20. All night until the opposing team does something about it. Anyway, 16 points and 17 rebounds, another big night for him. Phoenix had a comfortable lead for a big portion of the game. But as the Clippers started to make a run, and you could feel the game getting close at the end of the third, it was none other than Chris Paul that took control and would not let go of the lead. 3 straight possessions in a 90 second span, of straight iso CP3, to get the lead from 7, all the way back up to 15 to enter the 4th quarter. He single handedly stopped the momentum of the home team, and continued even harder in the last 12 minutes of the game. 31 of his 41 points came in the second half with everything on the line. An unbelievable performance. You could see him sensing that this is the moment, the time for him to take matters into his own hands and after so many heartbreaks and missed opportunities, to finally step on the biggest stage that we all agree he deserves to be on. The NBA finals. For the first time in his career at age 36. Never say never baby. At the end, you could see how emotional Paul was, and how much this means to him. To be honest, I am super happy for Chris. As a person who appreciates smart and efficient play, to me he is the player when you talk about basketball IQ so I’ve been pulling for him to finally win the championship. Whoever comes out of the east, the Suns and CP3 certainly feel they have a great chance to win it all. I absolutely agree and wish that they do it. One time for the point god. Let me know in the comments who do you think come out of the east, and who you got in the finals. That’s it for now, subscribe and talk to you in the next one. Peace out.
