Canadians Invade America! (peacefully) - Galbraith Mtn. - Washington, USA
In this episode, we go across the Canadian border into the USA, to Mt. Galbraith, near Bellingham, Washington. It's been a lot of years since we got to do this, so we made the best of out it! If you appear to see us avoiding certain jumps and such, you'd be correct....keep in mind these were new trails (to me), and more of a pre-ride situation. "North Shore Gnar" is nothing like "USA Singletrack", so we felt compelled to play it safe on that side of the border... :) The trails we managed to check out were: Spacewolf - 01:07 (a local told us it was pretty beat up after a racent race, just to add to the spice factor) Happy Hour - 03:37 (shady ferny single track) SST - 08:49 (long, fast, open, jumpy singletrack) Backdoor - 12:25 (similar to SST, and a route ack to parking) Trailforks Info: https://www.trailforks.com/trails/spacewolf/ A steep and sometimes loose trail filled with a nearly blind rock drop and a large rock roll that has consequences to the right side in the form of a 8-10' vertical drop. https://www.trailforks.com/trails/happy-hour-198251/ Happy Hour starts with a short climb with the occasional off-camber corner leading to the start of Spirit Bear. From there, the trail drops in for deep turns and more off-camber goodness as it rapidly darts from turn to turn. A couple of tricky root sections and some flow add to the good times. New extension (2019) almost triples the length of the trail, and drops you down all the way to Lower Devilcross. The extension is rowdy and technical, with some great bridges, drops and lots of roots - a strong blue bordering on black in difficulty. https://www.trailforks.com/trails/sst-8499/ Fast and flowy. Lots of berms, optional jumps (big and small), and some drops. Black Bear Enduro Pre Ride in the Mud. Gnarly Mountain Bike Riding in Kanawha State Forest.
The final pre ride of the Black Bear Emduro course didn’t go as planned. It was a sloppy day of riding in the rain and it was such a blast it blew up my rim. Haha, no worries tho I was able to get my bike back together for the race this Sunday.
$$$ 12yo girl builds her dream DH bike | Norco Aurum HSP $$$
Nory, age 12, builds her dream downhill bike, and it's a good one too! Starting with a Norco Aurum HSP frame and pile of parts, she takes us step-by-step through the assembly process. She's young, and this is her first time building a bike - funny lessons learned along the way! I know many people will say she doesn't need or deserve this bike. But she's ridden mountain bikes her whole life and will be competing in DH for a sixth season this year. Nory races with Sweetlines Jr. Racing in Cat2, and the tracks are gnarly! We also ride at Whistler quite a bit, and I can't wait to see what she can do on this bike! The build ended up taking her four days, oof! She was really nervous about press fitting the bottom bracket, but that turned out to be pretty easy with a homemade tool. Cutting the chain to the right length took a few tries, and she struggled to get the fork and chain guide in place. But overall, she managed to do all the work herself - I'm so proud, and maybe she can fix my bike now? You will need several tools for a build like this. First, make sure you have a complete set of Allen and Torx wrenches, you'll use these a lot! You'll also want a torque wrench and a few sockets, lube, assembly compound, anti-cease, a cassette freehub tool, pliers, and scissors. One tool we didn't have was a press to install the press fit bottom bracket. Instead, we made our own from a big bolt, a few washers and nuts, and some tape. It worked really well!
