Daniel Ricciardo might be back to his best in Formula 1, and starting to show he could get a Red Bull Racing return after all. Ricciardo was performing at a Red Bull level at the Mexican Grand Prix - literally. He qualified alongside Max Verstappen AND outpaced Sergio Perez, which is as much of a statement as it’s possible to make in an AlphaTauri. ESPECIALLY as Ricciardo followed that up with a strong seventh place in the grand prix, running ahead of several faster cars for a lot of it and passing every test of his racecraft, tyre management and pace, while Perez completely imploded and wiped himself out at the first corner. And this is about much more than a single result. What makes AlphaTauri the worst car for Ricciardo's F1 comeback
Daniel Ricciardo’s Formula 1 comeback with AlphaTauri is one of the big stories of the 2023 season. But whether the story has a happy ending for the Australian and his many fans depends on what is probably the worst car on the grid for him to jump into. That’s not because its uncompetitive – although that doesn’t help – but because of tricky handling characteristics that could expose some of the same weaknesses that made his two years at McLaren – that glorious victory at Monza in 2021 aside - a failure. McLaren’s Formula 1 revival was on shaky ground for the first half of 2023, but its recent upturn in form gives hope to fans of the papaya team that it’s very much back on target. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri starred in qualifying at the British Grand Prix, taking second and third on the grid.
