Colombia fans were thrilled after their team's 1-0 victory over Senegal secured top spot in Group H – and a last-16 game against England. It was a cruel end to Senegal's World Cup campaign, as they became the first team to be eliminated by their disciplinary record after finishing level with Japan on points, goal difference and goals scored Subscribe for more ► http://is.gd/GuardianFootball • Colombia advance at World Cup as Senegal go out on yellow cards ► https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/jun/28/senegal-colombia-world-cup-group-h-match-report Support the Guardian ► https://theguardian.com/supportus STAY CONNECTED WITH GUARDIAN FOOTBALL: Like football? ► http://fb.me/GuardianFootball Like sport? ► http://fb.me/GuardianSport Follow us ► http://twitter.com/Guardian_Sport Official Guardian Football ► http://www.theguardian.com/football Support the Guardian ► https://theguardian.com/supportus
Amid a crescendo of boos and whistles as neither side tried to score, Japan advanced to the knockout round at the World Cup because of a newly implemented tiebreaker — fewer yellow cards. The Japanese, barely playing for the final 15 minutes of the match, lost to Poland 1-0 Thursday. But they still reached the round of 16 because Colombia beat Senegal 1-0 in the other Group H match. Both Japan and Senegal finished the group phase with four points, had the same goal difference and the same amount of goals scored. Starting at this year’s tournament, disciplinary records — known as fair play — were added by FIFA as a tiebreaker. Japan had four yellow cards in its three group matches while Senegal had six. It’s the first time since 1982 that no African team has advanced from the first round at the World Cup. Poland, which had already been eliminated, got its goal from defender Jan Bednarek in the 59th minute. He beat his marker at the far post and volleyed in a swerving free kick from Rafal Kurzawa. When Bednarek scored, Japan was facing elimination. However, Colombia’s goal in the 74th minute of the other group match in Samara meant Japan was in second place and would advance. As the game continued, it barely got above walking pace, prompting many inside the Volgograd Arena to show their displeasure by whistling and booing. During injury time, Japan’s players softly passed the ball among themselves, while their Polish opponents barely made an effort, content to finish the tournament with a victory following two losses. Japan coach Akira Nishino made six changes to the starting lineup ahead of the match — all four of Japan’s scorers in the previous two games were left on the bench. But the Japanese still had more of the chances in the first half. Poland had an early chance to take the lead in the 32nd minute when Japan goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima stopped a header from Kamil Grosicki. Scampering across his goal before diving, Kawashima clawed the ball to safety just before it had crossed the line. Robert Lewandowski then had a chance to put Poland ahead 2-0 — a result that would have allowed Senegal to advance — in the 74th minute after a swift counterattack but his effort flew over the bar. GROUP DYNAMICS Japan will next face the winner of Group G, either Belgium or England, on Monday in Rostov-on-Don. Colombia, which won the group with six points, will play the second place team in that group on Tuesday in Moscow. Senegal, however, has become the first victim of the new tiebreaker. “I don’t know if the regulation is cruel or not, but I can’t ask my players to go on the pitch in order to avoid yellow cards,” Senegal coach Aliou Cisse said. “You have to be in contact with other players when you play football. This is how you play football. It worked against us.” KNOCKOUT ROUND Japan has reached the knockout round at the World Cup three times in the last five tournaments.
Japan vs Poland 0 - 1 FIFA World Cup 2018/06/28 Japan 0-1 Poland REPORT: Bednarek fires winner but Japan progress in second spot on fair play rule Jan Bednarek ensured Poland would leave Russia with something to smile about - but it was Japanese coach Akira Nishino who was grinning at the final whistle. Southampton’s defender netted a 58th minute winner to restore some Polish pride - and it looked for a while that would be enough to knock their opponents out of qualification for the knockout phase. But when news filtered through from Samara that Yerry Mina had found the net 16 minutes from time the situation changed - as Japan had progressed to the last 16 on the Fair Play rule. The goal meant that Senegal and Japan could not now be separated on points, goal difference or the number of goals scored - meaning that the side who progressed had totted up the fewest disciplinary points. That team was Japan who had only picked up four cautions to the African nation’s six - and news finally filtered through to Nishori’s players five minutes from the end of time. What had been an entertaining encounter was then reduced as a spectacle as Nishori’s side played the ball between themselves at the back. Poland were content not to chase the game - they didn’t have to as they knew they were on the way home before a ball had been kicked in Volgograd. That led to wolf-whistles from a crowd of over 40,000 who made their feelings very known on the issue during the final few moments. In fact, while both teams were congratulating each other, those catcalls continued as the supporters were leaving the stadium. But that mattered not to the Japanese players who hugged one another as referee Janny Sikazwe got sick of the tap-ball and called a halt to proceedings, leaving the Japanese awaiting news of Colombia’s victory. Xhaka and Shaqiri in hot water for controversial goal celebrations Published: 17:57 EDT, 23 June 2018 | Updated: 19:20 EDT, 23 June 2018 Switzerland players Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri are the subject of FIFA disciplinary proceedings following their controversial goal celebration against Serbia. Xhaka and Shaqiri, who are both of Albanian-Kosovan heritage, celebrated their goals in the 2-1 Group E win by putting their hands together to form a double-headed eagle similar to the one on the Albanian flag. This nationalist symbol risked inflaming tensions in the Balkans among Serbians - who do not recognise Kosovo's independence - and ethnic Albanians.
