Tour de France 2021 Stage 21 Highlights | Can Cavendish Take The Record On The Champs-Élysées?
Mark Cavendish aimed to take a dream record 35th Tour de France victory on his favourite finish in cycling - the Champs-Élysées - wearing the green jersey as leader of the points competition. It wouldn’t be straightforward though, along with sprinters like Wout van Aert and Jasper Philipsen, breakaways always try to take the stage victory here. Could he take the record from Eddy Merckx or would it be a fairytale too far? Just as it has done every year since 1975, the 2021 Tour de France will draw to a close with a procession into the French capital, followed by a criterium-like finish on the iconic Champs-Élysées circuit. This stage is the unofficial sprinter’s World Championships and a prize that every fastman wants on his palmares. Several of the top sprinters lining up for this year’s race have already tasted success here, but there are many that still have a glaring, Champs-Élysées-shaped hole on their record. Tour de France 2021 Stage 20 Highlights | Last Chance For A GC Shake Up In Individual Time-Trial
With just a few seconds between Richard Carapaz and Jonas Vingegaard, and similar between Ben O’Connor and Wilco Kelderman, the top 5 was all to play for in Stage 20’s individual time-trial. TT specialists Stefan Bisseger, Stefan Küng, and Wout van Aert aimed to get a stage win in their last opportunity but nobody could count out yellow jersey holder Tadej Pogačar from a repeat of his early TT performance. To a draw a dramatic close to this year’s yellow jersey battle, the organisers have thrown in a flat, 30.8km-long individual time trial on the penultimate day. The first 19 days could be considered mere build up to this one stage, the ultimate race of truth. For some, particularly the pure climbers, the advantages they’ve spent almost three weeks building could be wiped out in a painfully short amount of time, while for others this stage marks a fantastic opportunity to right previous wrongs and claw their way back onto the podium. A wet, rolling stage through the Pyrenees faced the depleted peloton after the second rest day. Would stage hunters like Patrick Konrad, Magnus Cort, and Omar Fraile be able to make the breakaway stick on a day that, on paper, suited them perfectly? Or would the GC contenders apply some pressure to Tadej Pogačar?. While it may not look quite as difficult as its Pyrenean predecessor, it’s the kind of stage where we could see a successful ambush sprung, particularly in the valley sections between the three main climbs - the Col de Port (11.4km at 5.1%), Col de la Core (13.1km at 6.6%) and Col de Portet-d’Aspet (5.4km at 7.1%).
