Almost a week in and the Vuelta is in full swing. Stage six takes riders down from Requena, at almost 700m above sea level through several descents and accents that pose no real challenge. By the 75th kilometer the stage flattens out in time for an intermediate sprint at the 98th km. However, the likelihood of the sprinters making it all the way to the finish seems uncertain. With little less than 3km riders are met with a steep incline of an average of over 9% for around 2km. A final increase to 21% with 150 meters to go, a solo win or small breakaway seems likely to conclude the classically Spanish stage race. Another flat stage, and another chance for sprinters such as Fabio Jakobsen and Jasper Philipsen to increase their positions on the points classification. Whilst today’s stage is another flat one that is bound to be the victory of a sprinter, bear in mind, looks can be deceiving. With long exposed roads in between Tarancón - Albacete, the likelihood of the peloton being split into echelons and breaks seems high. An intermediate sprint is thrown in for good measure at around 130km in, mixed with unpredictable weather that will for sure result in a fast paced conclusion to the stage. A relaxing day for the riders on the 4th stage of The Vuelta a España? Compared to the Mountain stage the day before; yes. Cycling along the plains of eastern Madrid, there are no KOM points available, but with undulating terrain and it is likely the stage will finish in a Breakaway or Bunch Sprint. A stage it seems for puncheurs, the likes of Fabio Jakobsen, Arnaud Demare and Magnus Court could make an appearance - whilst other riders not yet able to put themselves in contention may make use of their ‘easier’ day, to raise their odds. If you have forgotten it was La Vuelta a España, stage 3 is sure to remind you with its 7.8km climb at an average gradient of 9.3% with a mountain top finish at the Picón Blanco, that cyclists came here to climb mountains. With three category climbs it marks the first big day for riders, with Primoz Roglic, Adam Yates and Mikel Landa all sure to make an appearance and battle it out for the finish. However, an intermediate sprint around the 169th kilometer could see the sprinters hold out before the climbers tackle the Picon Blanco with gradients as steep as 17%! The second day of The Vuelta a España and it seems like this may be a day for the sprinters. An inland stage that is probably one of the flattest stages in this year’s Vuelta a España, a sprint finish seems certain, with the likes of Jasper Philipsen and Fabio Jakobsen trying to put a dent in the points classification. However, a ramp not far from the end could see some latent attacks that could result in an exciting finish. Subscribe to GCN+ for cycling as you have never seen it before! The Vuelta a España kicked off with a TT stage in Burgos, a perfect stage for the likes of Primoz Roglic and Jan Tratnik to battle it out for the red jersey. A short TT of 7.1km, the route started inside the famous Cathedral of Saint Mary of Burgos before approaching two climbs, one at 5% and the other at 7.1% for just over a kilometer. Packing quite the punch on the first day of the Grand Tour - the race remains flat for the descent back towards the Cathedral where the winner of stage 1 of the The Vuelta a España will be decided.
