La Vuelta 2021 Stage 20 Highlights | Final Road Stage For GC Challengers
It may seem surprising that this Vuelta stage does not include the big mountains in its previous penultimate stages which may make it seem easier for the riders, however this is far from the truth, including 3,000 meters of climbing just for good measure. Possessing five cat climbs that on their own seem simple enough, the recovery time in between them is short meaning riders will have to work hard to manage their energy reserves and tackle the climbs systematically. A steeper final climb concludes with a summit finish, with riders climbing for 8.3km at an average of 5.3%. Designed by Oscar Pereiro (2006 Tour de France Winner), he described the stage as leg-breaking, and with the successive climbs at the end, it surely does seem that way. Last Big Day For The GC Battle! | La Vuelta 2021 Stage 18 Highlights
Another four cat-climbs in today’s stage, it is fitting that this stage that includes one of the hardest climbs of La Vuelta has been remarked as including elevations that have rarely been seen before in the Grand Tour. Featuring La Vuelta favourites such as Puertu de San Llaurienzu at an average of 8.6% for 10km, the stage then descends away from the San Llaurienzu, up a secondary cat climb before a technical and somewhat dangerous descent towards Pola de Lena. The special and final HC climb of La Vuelta then makes a grand entrance, lasting for a gruelling 15km with an average of 10%, and time running out for climbers before final TT, every second will count. La Vuelta 2021 Stage 15 Highlights | Breakaways And GC Action In The Mountains
Another tough day in the Mountains, the stage starts in Sierra de Gredos towards the eastern area of the massifs. Flat at the beginning around the region of Extremadrua, once the riders enter the province of Castilla-La-Mancha the first of four cat climbs begins. The first climb is up the Alto de la Centera for 15.5km, but not even before riders complete a full descent does the next climb of Puerto de Pedro Bernardo ascend, albeit a longer but shallower climb. Roglič and Mas could be battling it out through this stage with the next climb reaching 1,570m above sea level (the highest point of the stage), climbing for a whole 20km and with the last climb of Puerto San Juan de Nava having bonus points could cause a scramble between the top of the GC contenders. La Vuelta 2021 Stage 14 Highlights | Up To The Mountains!
Into the last week of La Vuelta the riders will tackle a climb new to this year’s edition of the tour, the Pico Villercas. Before that, the race starts at Don Benito with flat terrain that quickly starts to rise as the race moves towards Cañamero, tackling the first climb of Puerto de Berzocama at an average of 5.2% for 7.7km. A quick descent down riders will have to put in another effort to get over a steeper climb towards Collado de Ballesteros, with the first, second and third kilometers averaging 10 and 15 and 14 percent respectively. Another descent down and riders are met with an intermediate sprint that could include a mixed bag after several tough climbs, followed by the final ascent of the Ballesteros pass for 14.5km averaging 6.2%. La Vuelta 2021 Stage 12 Highlights
A mixed stage on day 12 that whilst hilly does not write off the sprinters and does not guarantee the climbers an easy win. Between Jaén and Córdoba the cyclists will face two main climbs, with an intermediate sprint inbetween. These two climbs will prove challenging and at averages of up to 11% could see sprinters drop off after they contest the sprint before the climb. However, with 18km remaining after the final climb’s descents it will not be impossible for sprinters to have a chance of winning the stage if they play their cards correctly. La Vuelta 2021 Stage 11 Highlights
Day 11 and a classic Vuelta stage that has featured several times in the past. Favouring strong climbers for the challenging hills, this year's stage is shorter than its predecessors around the ‘muro’, at 133km long, that will see a breakaway likely form, with the mountains being too much for the sprinters. That is not to say they won't feature however, with an intermediate sprint also packed in, the stage is likely to be climatic and fast paced. La Vuelta 2021 Stage 9 Highlights | Climbers Do Battle On The Alto De Velefique
With many of the flatter stages now completed, La Vuelta moves back towards the mountains in what is one of the most challenging stages yet. Over the 188 kilometer stage between Puerto Lumbreras and the top of Alto de Velefique. A stage resembling that of a similar one in 2009 that saw the same summit finish, with an average gradient of 6.4% for 13.2km. La Vuelta 2021 Stage 7 Highlights | Tug Of War On The Balcón de Alicante!
The seventh stage, and the end of the first week. The riders are treated to the first proper mountain stage of La Vuelta, packing in a whole six category climbs and a summit finish just for good measure in just 152k. A chance for defending champion Primož Roglič to do well, this challenging terrain will see riders face climbs between 6.4%, and gradients up to 16% on the Balcón de Alicante. The last few hundred meters are a nice respite for riders after an excruciating climb, which could lead to a quick and fast paced victory where anything could happen.
