Bishop’s Stortford and Enfield Town will do it all again on Tuesday night after their FA Trophy first qualifying round encounter ended all-square. The scene of a 5-0 loss to the town in the BetVictor Isthmian Premier League in August, the Blues will return to Donkey Lane after Billy Bricknell’s volley cancelled out Shomari Barnwell’s lobbed goal at the ProKit UK Stadium. The hosts opened the scoring against the run of play, after Muhammadu Faal and Ken Charles - who scored twice in the reverse league fixture - went close. Fred Burbidge was in action early on, blocking a cross with his feet that deflected off Faal and looped up into the air. After being dominated for the first quarter of an hour, Ryan Henshaw cleared up-field and Barnwell ran onto it and chipped the in-rushing Nathan McDonald from the edge of the box. Henshaw had a chance himself to double the lead, but headed over from a corner, before Jordan Chiedozie headed wide then had a free kick brilliantly tipped over the bar by McDonald. Sam Youngs took a shot on the end of a succinct counter-attack for Town, again forcing Burbidge into a save. At the other end Aarone Greene chipped just wide after good build-up by Chiedozie and Alfie Mason, before Greene was involved in a touchline incident with Town’s assistant manager Mario Noto being sent off as a result. HT 1-0 After his winning goal two weeks ago against Horsham, Billy Mycroft-Edwards had a chance to be the hero again when he pounced on some poor defending to cut in and shoot on his left foot, but McDonald got down well to save. And from the following corner, Town somehow managed to scramble away after a number of efforts to get a second for the Blues, before Charles miscued wide at the other end. Burbidge tipped a fine curling effort round the post, and from the resulting corner Glenn Wilson slid in at the back post but couldn’t convert after a flick on. Faal then missed from close range when it looked easier to score, before Henshaw made a great sliding tackle to keep the clean sheet - only until a minute later, when Bowling crossed from the left to Bricknell in the middle of the box, to score as he did in the 5-0 drubbing. The Blues had a succession of corners into additional time, but couldn’t force a winner. FT 1-1 The replay will take place on Tuesday 29 October, meaning the Blues’ scheduled home match - in the league at home to Corinthian Casuals - will need to be rearranged. Bishop’s Stortford 1-5 Cray Wanderers Match Report 17/9/19 The Blues slumped to a 1-5 defeat at home to Cray Wanderers on Tuesday night. In the rearranged fixture for our visitor’s involvement in the FA Cup, 10-man Blues suffered their biggest home defeat since a 0-5 against Banbury in January 2018. Wanderers opened the scoring on 25 minutes after a slow start to the game when Hoe Taylor converted from close range after Fred Burbidge had saved Ben Mundele’s original shot from the right channel. Jack Thomas got off the mark for the season with a brilliant solo goal to equalise four minutes later, he ran through the Wanderers’ midfield and shot low right-footed into the bottom corner. Just a minute later, Jamie Cureton had a great chance to take the lead with a curling effort from 12 yards, with the shot just going wide. Tom Murphy capitalised on the rare error in front of goal, scoring on 38 minutes after beating Ryan Henshaw to a long goal kick and shooting low past Burbidge. Karl Dent rounded off the first half’s goals with a powerful strike from a tight angle that found the back of the net. Taylor got his second after getting past Henshaw and scoring with a composed finish 10 minutes after the restart. Captain Sam Robbins was shown a red card for a last-man challenge, and Murphy scored straight from the free kick wide on the right. Olly Miles came on with 20 minutes to go and had a lively cameo in front of goal, with several good chances falling to the young man who scored the winner for Enfield in the FA Vase on Saturday. Wanderers managed to see out the game and move up to eighth in the BetVictor Isthmian Premier, while the Blues are down in 13th. TEAMS Bishop’s Stortford XI 1. Fred Burbudge 4.
