Alab Pilipinas sweeps Saigon Heat to seal ABL semis duel vs Hong Kong Eastern

HO CHI MINH CITY – San Miguel Alab Pilipinas barged into Vietnam and extinguished the fire out of Saigon Heat, 96-85, to book its ticket to the Asean Basketball League semifinals on Saturday at the CIS Arena. Not even the hostile crowd and some questionable calls in the second half could stop the visiting side from continuing its mastery over Saigon, as they led by as many as 15 points in the second half after a tightly contested battle in the first two periods.Playing a top heavy squad in Saigon, the biggest difference turned out to be the locals for Alab with Lawrence Domingo leading the attack. The 6-foot-5 Domingo came off the bench to score 21 points on an ultra-efficient 9-10 shooting coupled with his energy down low and on the defensive end.Renaldo Balkman also finished with 21 points while adding 12 rebounds as Justin Brownlee finished with 18 points, 13 rebounds and three assists. The Philippines will now take on Christian Standhardinger and the Hong Kong Eastern team on Wednesday in their maiden semifinals appearance.Getting a big boost from their home crowd, the Heat looked confident at the beginning, keeping in step with the third-seeded Alab and even taking the lead early in the second quarter. The game was last tied at 40 with less than four minutes to go in the second quarter, but back-to-back dunks by Domingo and Brownlee pumped life into Alab Pilipinas heading into the break. They never looked back since.Domingo and Brownlee continued to make damage for Alab in the third before the returning Josh Urbiztondo made his presence felt by hitting two three pointers early in the fourth to douse cold water on every Saigon attempt at a comeback.Pao Javelona also had a solid outing for the Philippines as he finished with 11 points, six rebounds and four assists while Ray Parks shrugged off a bad shooting night to  finish with 10 points, seven rebounds, three assists and a block.Akeem Scott led the Heat with 22 points whie Maxie Esho chipped in 20.Fil-American Mikey Williams was held to just six points on 2-6 shooting.

TOWNSVILLE BLACKHAWKS VS PNG HUNTERS (RD 11 INTRUST SUPER CUP 2015)
TOWNSVILLE BLACKHAWKS VS PNG HUNTERS (RD 11 INTRUST SUPER CUP 2015)

Hunters down Blackhawks by Michael Thompson, Sports Reporter – Townsville Bulletin THE full might of Papua New Guinea’s first semi-professional rugby league side has provided the Townsville Blackhawks with a well-timed reality check. Fearless physicality was expected from the PNG Hunters on Saturday and that is what they delivered, with their enthusiastic forwards powering PNG to a 22-16 win over the ladder-leading Blackhawks. A fierce fightback from a 22-10 deficit could not stop the Blackhawks having their nine-game winning streak broken, but they still retain top spot on the Intrust Super Cup ladder with a superior points differential. Blackhawks hooker Anthony Mitchell is expected to play in his team’s next clash following this weekend’s bye after suffering a corked thigh near full-time, but Mitchell’s knock was not the only injury scare in what was a high-quality encounter. Hunters fullback Stargroth Amean was stretchered off the field near half-time and hospitalised after falling awkwardly into a tackle, but was discharged on Saturday night after being cleared of any neck or spinal damage. A lack of composure in attack from the Blackhawks was compensated by some brilliant scrambling defence, but the Hunters were simply too strong at Jack Manski Oval, with their second phase play proving especially dangerous. “I don’t think it was until the last 10 or 15 minutes that we had confidence in what we were doing and backed our attack, and leading up to that we were disjointed and we went away from what’s been working for us,” Blackhawks captain Daniel Beasley said. “We went into the game prepared for them to be very tough across the field, especially through the middle, and they’re a hard group of men who fight for 80 minutes.” A packed house at Jack Manski — including hundreds of parochial PNG supporters — watched as both teams engaged in an early arm wrestle, which was broken after 15 minutes when Hunters five-eighth Israel Eliab scored the game’s opening point. Plenty of big hits and dropped ball featured in the next 20-minute passage, before Noel Underwood got Townsville an equaliser running on to a Tom Humble short ball, but PNG got a 10-4 half-time buffer when centre Thompson Teteh ran through some sloppy Blackhawks defence. PNG were soon back in front, however, when Enock Maki barged over the tryline five minutes after half-time, and they pushed to 22-10 when half-back Ase Boas finished off a superb attacking play. That was when the Blackhawks launched into gear, with Kyle Feldt pouncing on a Jahrome Hughes grubber, and ISC debutant Mitchell Seri almost barged over for a last-gasp equaliser, only to be denied by some desperate PNG defence. “I certainly thought we had the side out there to win the game,” Blackhawks coach Kristian Woolf said. “The more games you win the closer you come to a loss sometimes, and the good thing from that is there’s no chance of us getting ahead of ourselves — and I don’t think we were — and it gives us a chance to go back and look at a few things.” PNG HUNTERS 22 (Thompson Teteh, Israel Eliab, Ase Boas, Enock Maki tries; Noel Zeming 3 goals) def TOWNSVILLE STINGERS 16 (Kyle Feldt, Tom Humble, Noel Underwood tries; Kyle Feldt 2 goals) at Jack Manski Oval. EASTS TIGERS VS PNG HUNTERS (RD 5 INTRUST SUPER CUP 2014)
EASTS TIGERS VS PNG HUNTERS (RD 5 INTRUST SUPER CUP 2014)

The PNG Hunters fought back from a 12 point deficit to draw with the Eastern Suburbs Tigers 20-20 in Brisbane. Easts were first to score in the first half through Shane Nueman. Maeli Seve then crossed over again for the Easts to bring the scores to 8-0. Both attempts by Cody Walker to convert the tries were unsuccessful. The Hunters soon hit back through speed star David Loko. Noel Zemming added the extras to put the Hunters right back in the game. Right before half time, Zemming slotted in another 2 points from a penalty to lock the scores at 8-8. In the second half, Easts got away to steal the lead after Walker scored from a kick. Walker then converted his own try. The game looked over when Easts scored again from a good set play to put Jarrod Mcinally over the line. Walker failed to convert but soon added a further two points from a penalty goal to extend the score to 20-8. Straight from the kick off, Hunters stole the ball and in the same play sent Wartovo Puara barging over to score under the posts. Zemming converted the try to put the Hunters back in contention. The Hunters were not done yet when minutes later, a break down the wing caused an overlap to send Garry Lo in to score. Zemming, who was faultless, added the extras to level the scores at 20-20.

Leicester Tigers 26-14 Northampton Saints - Official Highlights 18-03-12 | LV Cup
Leicester Tigers 26-14 Northampton Saints - Official Highlights 18-03-12 | LV Cup

Tigers hold out Saints to lift season's first trophy. Geordan Murphy lifted the LV= Cup at Worcester's Sixways stadium as Leicester won the battle of the East Midlands against Northampton 26-14 to claim the first silverware of the English club rugby season and a place in the Heineken Cup. The match was settled soon after half-time as wing Scott Hamilton ran 80 metres after intercepting an ambitious pass from Saints fly-half Stephen Myler. Teenage fly-half George Ford, who kicked a match tally of 16 points, had kept the Tigers in touch with three penalties before flanker Steve Mafi gave them the lead for the first time in the 26th minute. Northampton, winners of the competition two years ago, did not manage a try until five minutes from time, through lock Christian Day. Sunny Sixways provided a perfect stage but with a chilly north-westerly wind aiding Northampton from the kick-off. After a 'sighter' from a difficult angle, Myler opened the scoring at the second attempt from near halfway in the sixth minute. Although Leicester mounted a threatening attack at the other end, the ball was spilled and the Tigers scrum was penalised for a second time. Loosehead Boris Stankovich picked up an injury and was replaced by Marcos Ayerza, but not before Saints were awarded yet another penalty at the breakdown. Myler's kick was on the mark from fully 50 metres to give Saints a 6-0 lead after 11 minutes but Leicester then strung together a series of threatening attacks. Again they yielded penalties rather than tries but Ford was equal to the task and pulled his side level with two successful kicks. The two fly-halves exchanged penalties again to take the score to 9-9 after 24 minutes, but that was no real reflection on either side's willingness to move the ball through the hands. Leicester were seeing rather more of the ball, however, and deservedly went ahead when Mafi barged past Vasily Artemyev to score in the left corner on 26 minutes. The rangy flanker had begun the attack by fielding a restart on his own 22 but the telling thrust had been delivered by Billy Twelvetrees, carving through the Saints defence with Graham Kitchener in support. Ford added the conversion. Scrum-half Martin Roberts prevented further damage by being first to a dangerous grubber kick by Murphy, at the cost of a five-metre scrum. Although the Tigers' front row was now more than up to the challenge posed by Tonga'uiha and Co and drove menacingly to force a penalty, Ford spoiled his unblemished record by missing the relatively easy kick. Saints approached the second half with far more purpose but again collapsed a scrum and this time Ford converted his penalty from 50 metres to open up a 10-point lead. James Downey and George Pisi nearly fashioned an opening but the ball was spilled within striking distance of the Tigers' try-line. Two minutes later Myler tried to force an opening with a floated pass that only found its way into the hands of left wing Hamilton who raced from his 22 to score at the other end. Ford converted the 50th minute try and Leicester were three scores ahead. It made the decision to spurn a kickable penalty on the hour all the more puzzling as Leicester then successfully defended a line-out in the corner and then a series of five-metre scrums. Five minutes later, Ford left the field to be replaced by Flood as the Tigers' coaching team decided they needed the England man's experience. The youngster had again shown remarkable maturity and kicking prowess. The penalty count against them was mounting, however, and in the 71st minute skipper Murphy was shown a yellow card for his team's repeated infringements. But it was not until the 75th minute that Saints' desperate attacking efforts were rewarded when Day crashed over in the corner for an unconverted try.
