Late in the first half on Sunday afternoon, a buzz went around Barclays Center. Not for anything happening on the court, but because an unmasked Kyrie Irving had just arrived to take his courtside seat for the Brooklyn Nets' matchup with the New York Knicks. In the latest episode of this season-long saga, Irving has been cleared to attend home games -- like Sunday's 110-107 win over the Knicks -- despite remaining unvaccinated against COVID-19. But while he can now enter Barclays Center, he is still not allowed to play, which has resulted in plenty of confusion and consternation, both inside and outside the franchise. Late in February, New York City mayor Eric Adams announced that he was planning to remove the city's public sector vaccine and mask mandates. Those rules were officially relaxed on March 7, which meant unvaccinated persons -- including Irving -- were no longer barred from public spaces such as bars, gyms and large venues including Barclays Center. So if he's allowed in the building, why is he not allowed to play? New York City also has a private sector vaccine mandate which has been in place since Dec. 27, and Adams announced that it will remain in place. If you work for a New York-based business, you must be vaccinated to show up to work. We saw this in action in February when Adams fired over 1,000 city workers who refused to get the vaccine. In short, Irving can be at Barclays Center on his own time, but he cannot be there as an employee suiting up for the Nets.

Kyrie Irving says he's staying "rooted" in his decision to remain unvaccinated and won't be swayed by what basketball fans want.
Novak Djokovic has boarded an Emirates flight to Serbia after his bid to stay in Australia failed, when a Federal Court upheld a government decision to deport the world number one because of his anti-vaccination stance. The tennis star has been embroiled in a lengthy saga over his right to stay in the country to compete in the Australian Open, which is due to begin on Monday. Mr Djokovic, who is unvaccinated, arrived in Australia with an exemption from the vaccination requirement approved by the Victorian government and Tennis Australia, which granted him a visa to travel to Australia. However, he was detained upon arrival, his visa cancelled and was sent to Melbourne’s Park Hotel, which acts as an immigration hotel. He then launched a legal campaign to overturn the federal government’s decision to cancel his visa, which culminated in Judge Anthony Kelly reinstating Mr Djokovic’s visa. Immigration Minister Alex Hawke revoked the world number one’s visa four days later using his ministerial powers. While Mr Djokovic challenged this decision in the courts, the decision was upheld by Federal Court judges, and Mr Djokovic was ordered to leave the country. The tennis player had been hoping to make Grand Slam history by securing a record-breaking 21st title at the Australian Open.
Colts place Darius Leonard on reserve/COVID-19 list; LB will not play vs. Cardinals Another key member of the Colts has been sidelined for Saturday's game. Linebacker Darius Leonard has been placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list, the team announced. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that Leonard is unvaccinated and will therefore miss 10 days -- including Week 17's game -- due to his positive test. Receiver Zach Pascal and safety Khari Willis were also placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Indianapolis elevated six players to fill the open roster spots, including receiver Keke Coutee and cornerback Brian Poole. Leonard's absence deals a significant blow to Indianapolis' defense, which heads into Saturday night's contest with the goal of containing Kyler Murray and Arizona's explosive offense. Leonard is coming off a game in which he finished with 10 tackles (including one for loss), intercepted Patriots quarterback Mac Jones once and keyed a strong first half that propelled the Colts to a win over New England. Without the two-time first-team All-Pro (who recently earned his third Pro Bowl selection), Indianapolis will have to turn to its backup defenders to fill the void left by Leonard. E.J. Speed returned a blocked punt for a touchdown against New England -- his second such achievement of the 2021 season -- and is listed behind Leonard on the Colts' most recent depth chart. The Colts are already entering Saturday's game without its three interior starting offensive linemen, losing guards Quenton Nelson and Mark Glowinski to the reserve/COVID-19 list. Center Ryan Kelly will miss the game due to a personal reason. Indianapolis (8-6) will hope to find a way to continue its hot streak despite the personnel losses against Arizona (10-4) on Christmas night. Kickoff is at 8:15 p.m. ET exclusively on NFL Network.
