The umpires and players make their way to the ground. Only once a target of above 300 has been successfully chased down in ODIs in Auckland and this was done by New Zealand back in 2007 against Australia. A collective batting effort from the Indian batters helped the side to post a mammoth total on the board after being put into bat by Kane Williamson! Earlier in the match New Zealand won the toss and opt to bowl first. Indian openers Shubman Gill (50 off 65) and Shikhar Dhawan (72 off 77) gave India a strong platform with a solid opening wicket partnership of 124. Both of the batters completed their respective half-centuries but fell sometime after their milestones in the matter of an over. Shreyas Iyer who came in at number three showed his class with a brilliant innings off 80 from 76 deliveries including 4 fours and as many sixes. He was the sixth wicket to fall for India but before his dismissal there were a couple of batters Rishabh Pant (15 off 23) and Suryakumar Yadav (4 off 3) failed to impress in the ODI circuit. While Shreyas added 94 runs for the fifth wicket alongside Sanju Samson (36 off 38) he also added 46 runs for the sixth wicket alongside Washington Sundar to propel the team's total past 300 from being 4/160 at one stage. Washington Sundar showed his class as he finished unbeaten on 37 runs from just 16 deliveries to make sure that India had 306 runs on the board at the end of their allotted 50 overs. For New Zealand Lockie Ferguson was the most successful bowler picking three wickets and giving 59 runs in his full quota. While Tim Southee also scalped three wickets he went for 73 runs in his ten overs. He did complete the milestone of 200 ODI wickets. Adam Milne picked a wicket but failed to control the flow of runs. Matt Henry and Mitchell Santner who was the lone spinner in the Kiwi's lineup and both returned wicketless. Can New Zealand chase this total down or will Indian bowlers defend the big total set by the batters? Pitch Report | Murali Kartik and Anjum Chopra: "It's beautiful day here in Auckland. It's a drop-in surface. It's been under covers for more than a day. We see an even covering of grass. The surface might dry up as the game progresses. There's something in it for the seamers. The BCCI already announced the squad for the ODIs, which will be captained by Shikhar Dhawan and feature lots of fringe players who are looking to make their mark on the Indian team. However, given that the T20 World Cup 2022 will be played in Australia in just under three months’ time, the emphasis is on the shortest format of the game. The first T20I match between West Indies and India will be played in Tarouba, Trinidad on July 29. The second and third T20Is will be played in Basseterre on August 1 and 2, while the last two T20Is will be played in Florida, the USA on August 6 and 7. India had a good time in Ireland and England in the shortest format of the game, in which they displayed an ultra-aggressive approach with the bat which had a positive response from both the pundits and the fans. Virat Kohli Misses Out On The T20I Series; Ravichandran Ashwin Returns To The Fold The squad has some names missing, especially that of Virat Kohli, who as expected will not play against the West Indies. Other notable names missing from the squad were fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and express pacer Umran Malik. A surprise inclusion in the squad was off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin who has been recalled to the T20I team after missing out on the South Africa and England series. Also named in the squad was opener KL Rahul and left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav. However, their selection will be based on their fitness as Rahul is recovering from his injury to a sports hernia and Kuldeep Yadav suffered a finger injury while batting in the nets ahead of the South Africa series at home.
