E poi c’è l’ambizione della Roma, rimasta intrappolata per mesi, proprio come Maradona, a causa delle decisioni di Corrado Ferlaino: il club giallorosso ha l’accordo con Ottavio Bianchi, tecnico in rotta con il Napoli, ma il contratto con gli azzurri termina nel 1990, e Ferlaino non ha la minima intenzione di agevolare l’uscita dell’allenatore, costretto a rimanere fermo per un anno. Al suo posto, Dino Viola punta sulla voglia di riscatto di Gigi Radice: ne uscirà una Roma vicinissima al cuore della gente, costretta all’esilio al Flaminio a causa dei lavori all’Olimpico per Italia ’90. Il Mondiale dovrebbe rappresentare la ciliegina sulla torta di un momento storico per il movimento italiano. Finirà con una delusione bruciante, ma è un’altra storia.
