Adam Silver has encouraged the Philadelphia 76ers to both quickly and thoroughly resolve the investigation into whether team president Bryan Colangelo used Twitter inappropriately, a story that the NBA commissioner acknowledged was not one he wants to be thinking about during the league’s title series. Silver, speaking Thursday (Friday, PHL time) before Game 1 of the Cleveland-Golden State matchup at the NBA Finals news conference, said he has talked with 76ers officials after the story about five Twitter accounts and how they were used was broken by The Ringer earlier this week. “Here we are, Game 1 of the finals, it’s not necessarily something that we want to be talking about,” Silver said. “But it’s the reality of this league. And so I have no information beyond that, other than that investigation is underway.” The 76ers retained an independent law firm to determine whether Colangelo used the Twitter accounts. The situation could overshadow Philadelphia’s efforts this summer to land any of the top players who will be free agents — a list that includes LeBron James, who’s appearing in the NBA Finals for the eighth consecutive year. Among the targets of harsh or critical comments on those Twitter accounts: Philadelphia players Joel Embiid and Markelle Fultz, former 76ers general manager Sam Hinkie, Toronto Raptors executive Masai Ujiri and former Sixers players Jahlil Okafor and Nerlens Noel. Embiid has said he does not believe that Colangelo wrote the tweets, dismissing the story as “insane.” Colangelo has acknowledged using one of the accounts to monitor NBA happenings. “Let’s find out what’s going on,” Silver said. “We have to separate the chatter and sort of what either fans or frankly the media are saying from the facts. The first thing we have to do here is determine what the actual facts are in this circumstance.” Silver touched on many other topics in his annual address, including: SPORTS BETTING There will be wagering on Game 3 of the NBA Finals, at least in Delaware casinos. That state’s officials have announced that full-scale sports betting will begin there at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday (Wednesday, PHL time), one day before the series between Golden State and Cleveland shifts to the Cavaliers’ home floor. Delaware is the first state to take advantage of a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that now permits states to allow sports wagering. Delaware has been permitted to offer parlay wagers on NFL games since 2009, and has had sports betting legislation on its books for nearly a decade. Other states are trying to follow suit quickly. The NBA has told states it is seeking a 1 percent cut of betting, which it is calling an “integrity fee” to help offset the costs of enforcement incurred by the league office and also to serve as a royalty. “The real issue as we move to new jurisdictions that are legalizing sports betting is access to information,” Silver said. “That’s one of the things we have sought in model legislation ... and so what
The aim of the initiative called FUTURE TALENTS CUP (FTCup) is to help junior athletes and their clubs acquire international experience in the spectator sports of Football, Futsal, Handball, Basketball and Ice hockey through annually organised friendly matches (to be gradually implemented, with long term sustainability). Football will be the first tournament to be staged, in 2014/2015. The organiser of the FTCup is Future Talents Cup Non profit Ltd., the sport program organiser is Ferencvárosi Torna Club. The participants of the FTCup will include talented young athletes whose strong will power and resilience may set a good example for younger generations and for everybody else. FTCup is aimed to provide assistance for the players concerned in starting their domestic and international sports careers as well. In awareness of the fact that there are less fortunate young people as well, 10 % of our sponsorship income will be donated to child protecting organisations. Opportunities to participate in international events will be provided for all those who have no or hardly any such opportunity at present (e.g. not everyone is born in a good geographical location, different rates of growth and development, not everyone can be on the junior national team, scarce financial resources etc.). Our mission is to offset inequalities and to balance out pre-determined situations and any social exclusion. There are thousands of football clubs across Europe and only a fraction of them has opportunities to participate in international tournaments (despite the apparent demand). FTCup is intended to act as a supplement and a partner for ongoing international and national events, bringing together those who are mutually interested in such an opportunity (the thousands of potential participants guarantee the long term sustainability of the initiative and/or its integration in international series of events). With the help of its permanent international partner (InStat Football Ltd.) FTCup will continuously process, analyse and archive the image and video recordings produced in the course of the events. The statistics and other processed information and databases will be made available on its website, thereby promoting the work of clubs, professionals and sports managers and the career opportunities of young talents. We wish to help all – to the extent permitted by our financial and other resources. The participation and contributions of sports federations, sponsors and perhaps even states, is indispensable for the launching and continuation of the tournament system. The funds may only be used for the organisation of the events and for charity purposes. In addition to sports professional considerations the programme will generate tourism opportunities and revenues as well. (E.g. the planned 4-day final rounds (approx. 768 persons)), which the organisers intend to implement with state subsidies and/or sponsorship (prize hand-over ceremonies, networking, tourism etc.). The tax revenues from the amounts spent by invitees staying in the hosting city equal about half of the amount spent on invitation (with the tax revenues from the amounts spent by other interested foreigners, of a number similar to that of the invitees, the subsidy devoted to the organisation of the final round is fully recovered, etc.). Another impact effect will materialise in the form of advertisements through media. Clearly, the organisation of the final may be a key element of sustainability.

AUSTIN, Texas -- Matt Coleman and Kerwin Roach II each scored 22 points and Texas used an 11-0 run early in overtime to pull away from No. 20 West Virginia for an 87-79 win Saturday that was critical for the Longhorns' NCAA Tournament hopes. The Longhorns (18-13, 8-10) were in desperate need of a big late-season victory to shore up an inconsistent resume and got it in their seventh overtime game of the season. The Big 12's worst offensive team made 11 3-pointers, including two in the overtime by Coleman and Jacob Young, and shot 57 percent from the field. West Virginia led 48-42 early in the second half before Texas ripped off a 15-2 run keyed by a pair of 3-pointers from Dylan Osetkowski, who made five in the game. The Mountaineers forced overtime on Jevon Carter's driving reverse layup with 1.6 seconds left in regulation. Coleman put Texas up 76-74 with a 3-pointer from the right corner and made a short jumper before Young's 3 pointer stretched the lead to seven and the Longhorns held on the rest of the way. Freshman Jericho Sims scored 17 points and had eight rebounds for Texas, which lost by 35 to West Virginia in January. Lamont West scored 15 points for West Virginia (22-9, 11-7), which had five players score in double figures. BIG PICTURE West Virginia: The Mountaineers had already clinched second place in the Big 12. West Virginia's press defense was effective in the first half, but did little to disrupt Texas in the second half and overtime. The Mountaineers' inability to cover the 3-pointer kept Texas in the game early and proved especially costly in overtime. Texas: The Longhorns are seeing a late-season emergence from Sims, who will be critical to offset the loss of forward Mo Bamba, who missed his second consecutive game with a sprained left toe. Sims was 6 of 7 and that kind of production will be needed in the Big 12 tournament. The Longhorns are still without shooting guard Eric Davis Jr., who has been held out for three games after his name surfaced in a report that suggested he received payments from an agent representative.
