The quarterback does not need to be protected more than he already is. Clay Matthews has had it the worst so far, but there were flags thrown in the Monday Night Football Game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers that were ridiculous, Tyrone Crawford was penalized for roughing the passer for a textbook tackle on the Seattle Seahawks Russell Wilson, Eric Kendricks for hitting Aaron Rodgers. Every week we see this rule affecting the outcomes of games, and making it harder and harder to watch. We have even seen the worst of this rule affect defensive end William Hayes with the Miami Dolphins, who tore his ACL trying not to put his body weight on Derek Carr of the Oakland Raiders according to head coach Adam Gase. How is a defender supposed to sack a QB without falling on him? The crazies part of this rule, is quarterbacks are tearing their ACL’s on non contacts football plays. It happened to Jimmy Garoppolo of the 49ers this weekend. Teddy Bridgewater broke his leg doing the same in practice, and sometimes a QB injury opens the door for a legacy. Tom Brady sans Drew Bledsoe. Drew Brees opens the door for Philip Rivers, and Drew Brees. Baker Mayfield enters the game for the Cleveland Browns, and gets them their first win because of a quarterback injury. It is part of the game, and when you try and eliminate it with rule changes you degrade the sport we all love. Ravens win 27-14 in a game where running back Phillip Lindsay was ejected for “throwing punches & Case Keenum threw another red zone interception. The Broncos are now 2-1 and will play the red hot Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football after KC defeated the San Francisco 49ers today. They are 3-0, the Raiders lost to the Miami Dolphins and are 0-3, and the Los Angeles Chargers lost to Aqib Talib and the Rams are 1-2. The Broncos are still in second place in the AFC West. Quarterback Joe Flacco was efficient throwing 1 touchdown. Alex Collins was the Ravens leading rusher with 69 yards and 1 rushing TD. John Brown was the leading receiver 5 receptions for 68 yards on Ray Lewis day at M&T stadium. Terrell Suggs looked young and finished the game with 1.5 sacks. The Cleveland Browns Finally Win breaking one of the longest losing streaks in NFL history. Quarterback Baker Mayfield led the Browns to a 21-17 victory over Sam Darnold and the New York Jets after QB Tyrod Taylor left the game with an injury. The Browns also made all of their field goals. The fans were booing Tyrod Taylor and the Browns offense who were playing poorly. Baker Mayfield entered the game with about a minute or two left in the first half, drove the offense down the field, completing passes to Jarvis Landry to set up a field goal before halftime. It was only 3 points but there was an energy shift in the game. Running back Carlos Hyde rushed for the Browns touchdowns, and Mayfield caught a two point conversion. He finished the night 17/23 for 201 yards passing and zero TDs or interceptions. Sam Darnold finished with 169 yards and 2 picks. The Browns defense looked good especially rookie corner Denzel Ward and Myles Garrett who had two sacks. Congrats Cleveland you are 1-1-1 and appear to have broken the curse by trading away Josh Gordon to the New England Patriots. Bud Lights for everyone. The NFL keeps calling roughing the passer penalties, and CLay Matthews and the Packers were robbed of a week 1 victory because of a call in the 4th quarter. Ryan Fitzpatrick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs look like the two best QB’s in the NFL. The New England Patriots lose to the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Buffalo Bills cornerback Vontae Davis retires at halftime against the Los Angeles Chargers. Derek Carr was 29 of 32 for 188 yards and a touchdown. That’s a 90 percent completion rate. Marshawn Lynch was held to 65 yards on 18 carries and 1 rushing TD. Amari Cooper was the Raiders leading receiver with 10 catches for 116 yards. Martavis Bryant outperformed Jordy Nelson in his White Tiger return to the field. Tight end Jared Cook was kept in check after putting up 180 yards against the Los Angeles Rams. Case Keenum threw a red zone interception in the first half, after a beautiful 53 yard Phillip Lindsay rush. Von Miller should have had two sacks and a strip fumble, but the fumble sack on Carr was negated by a Todd Davis penalty. Case Keenum rushed for the other Broncos TD, and both rookie receivers Courtland Sutton and Tim Patrick had touchdown receptions called back by the referees. Emmanuel Sanders was the leading Broncos receiver in the Mile High City. Jake But is finding a bigger role in the offense 4 catches for 48 yards. Shaq Barrett blocked and extra point in the first half that was huge for the final 20-19 score, and Domata Peko was a force to be reckoned with on the defensive line. Broncos tied for first place with the Kansas CIty Chiefs in the AFC West. Chiefs 2-0 Patrick Mahomes 10 passing TD’s on the season. QB Nick Foles threw two interceptions, was sacked for a safety and turned the ball over a 3rd time due to a strip from Genard Avery. 2nd year defensive end Myles Garrett played very well notching 2 sacks and receiving a 92 rating from Pro Football Focus. The concern for Cleveland today is their 4th overall pick from the NFL Draft, Ohio State cornerback Denzel Ward. He suffered a lower back injury in the first quarter of the game, and is getting an MRI today to determine the extent of the injury. Nobody knows when MVP candidate Carson Wentz will return for the Eagles, but the way Foles has played Philly fans want it to be soon. The silver lining for the Eagles right now is that a lot of their starters are not playing in the preseason. Most of them are recovering from injuries and should be ready for week 1 of the NFL season, but they my be a bit rusty, especially not playing in this 3rd preseason game. Quarterback Case Keenum lead a couple scoring drives, one ending in a Brandon McManus Field Goal, and another with rookie running back royce Freeman scoring a touchdown. Keenum and wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders are definitely developing chemistry in the passing game and next week when the Broncos face the Washington Redskins we will want to see Keenum be a little more accurate with his passes. He tended to overthrow his receivers quite a few times. The starting defense looked much better, even without cornerback Chris Harris Jr. out with an injury. Phillip Lindsay continues to shine. He ran the ball well, played punt and kick return effectively, and tackled on punt coverage duty. Tight End Jeff Heuerman had a few impressive plays including a 2 point conversion, and Demarcus Walker is starting to look like a 2nd round draft pick. Bears QB Mitch Trubisky should have a lot more success this season with his new head coach and play caller Matt Nagy. Padres pitcher Luis Perdomo (Perdomo Arigato) tried to kill Nolan Arenado of the Rockies with a pitch aimed at his ribs. Arenado charged the mound, Perdomo threw his glove at him and then a classic baseball fight ensued. % players were eventually ejected from the game. The two mentioned above and A,J, Ellis, German Marquez, & Gerardo Parra. This fight had been building up since yesterday when Scott Oberg accidentally obliterated Manuel Margot with a pitch. In this game, before the fight Trevor Story was beaned as was Hunter Renfroe, and this highlight comes just days after Eric Hosmer became internet famous with the worst pop fly catch attempt in baseball history. The Eagles will now play the New England Patriots in Minnesota in Super Bowl 52. Tom Brady vs Nick Foles, the matchup everyone knew would be happening since week 1 of the 2017 NFL season. Case Keenum and company had one good offensive series in the entire game, and that came on the first drive when they scored on a wide open Kyle Rudolph touchdown. After that it was all defense, and all Nick Foles who finished the day with 352 yards passing, 3 touchdowns, and a 141 QB rating, which surpassed WR Danny Amendola who had the second highest rating of the day. Jay Ajayi, LeGarrette Blount, and Corey Clement were all effective in the rush attack, and Blount scored the one TD for the Group.
