Clay Matthews has had it the worst so far, but there were flags thrown in the Monday Night Football Game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers that were ridiculous, Tyrone Crawford was penalized for roughing the passer for a textbook tackle on the Seattle Seahawks Russell Wilson, Eric Kendricks for hitting Aaron Rodgers. Every week we see this rule affecting the outcomes of games, and making it harder and harder to watch. We have even seen the worst of this rule affect defensive end William Hayes with the Miami Dolphins, who tore his ACL trying not to put his body weight on Derek Carr of the Oakland Raiders according to head coach Adam Gase. How is a defender supposed to sack a QB without falling on him? The crazies part of this rule, is quarterbacks are tearing their ACL’s on non contacts football plays. It happened to Jimmy Garoppolo of the 49ers this weekend. Teddy Bridgewater broke his leg doing the same in practice, and sometimes a QB injury opens the door for a legacy. Tom Brady sans Drew Bledsoe. Drew Brees opens the door for Philip Rivers, and Drew Brees. Baker Mayfield enters the game for the Cleveland Browns, and gets them their first win because of a quarterback injury. It is part of the game, and when you try and eliminate it with rule changes you degrade the sport we all love.
