A blemish free round from Rory Mcilroy places him in the top 10 going into the weekend at the 2022 Slync.lo Dubai Desert Classic. ► SUBSCRIBE: http://et.golf/Subscribe The Slync.Io Dubai Desert Classic, which is the oldest DP World Tour tournament in the Middle East and the longest-running outside of Europe, returns this week to Emirates Golf Club for its 33rd edition - and first as a Rolex Series event. It is the third event on the 2022 schedule and is the second of five Rolex Series events set to be played this year, following Thomas Pieters’ first Rolex Series triumph in Abu Dhabi last week. Paul Casey returns this week to defend the title he won by four shots last year, which saw him earn a milestone 15th European Tour title. Previous Rolex Series champions set to tee it up include current DP World Tour Number One Collin Morikawa, Tyrrell Hatton, Tommy Fleetwood, Shane Lowry and Lee Westwood. An in-form Rory McIlroy is one of several former champions who are heading to Dubai this week following a strong performance in Abu Dhabi. Darren Moores men were hoping to build on that result against Karl Robinsons Oxford, the only side to have beaten The Owls at Hillsborough this season. However, Wednesdays away form is far from good. In the second round of The American Express 2022, Danny Lee’s tee shot hits the rocks surrounding the par-3 17th green, then bounces across the water and ends up 64 yards away. Lee mishits his second shot into the water, takes a drop, then hits his fourth across the green embedding against the rocks. Taking another drop, Lee hits his six shot onto the green and two putts for an eight. A dreaded snowman on the scorecard. Patrick Cantlay will return to La Quinta, buoyed by his final round at The American Express last year, which saw him shoot a course-record 61, but ultimately fall short of the South Korean. World No. 1, Jon Rahm will be returning to the event for the first time since 2019, hoping to repeat his heroics a year prior that saw him lift the trophy. With the chance to win the final European Tour event and the opportunity for some players to end the year as European Number One, there's plenty to play for this week. While any of the players in the 53-man field can end the week as DP World Tour Champion, only six can finish the season as European Number One. Race to Dubai leader Collin Morikawa is aiming to be the first American to claim the title. He tops the standings courtesy of winning The Open and the WGC - Workday Championship, as well as a couple of other top-8 performances in majors this year. Billy Horschel, who captured the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in September, is also in the running to become the first American to win the Race to Dubai and will do so with a victory at Jumeirah Golf Estates. Tyrrell Hatton memorably captured a record-breaking fifth Rolex Series title in Abu Dhabi at the start of the year. He heads to Dubai requiring all 2,000 points and Morikawa and Horschel to finish worse than a three-way tie for third and second, respectively.
