Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton is yet to officially sign with Mercedes for 2021 and beyond even though many expect it to be a mere formality given the highly successful partnership between the two. After George Russell impressed quite a few people as Hamiltonâs stand-in after Hamiltonâs positive Covid-19 diagnosis, some people including Red Bullâs team principal Christian Horner have suggested that he could be used as a negotiation tool while discussing the terms of Hamiltonâs future contract. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has now spoken about this Link to poll: https://www.youtube.com/post/UgwX0cqDKULLClzkVb54AaABCQ 0:00 - Is Russell Being Used To Further Contract Negotiations With Hamilton? 1:44 - Fast Feed I'm your host Dillon Shelley and first up on Formula World: Is Russell Being Used To Further Contract Negotiations With Hamilton? Horner gave his thoughts on the possibility of Russell being used by Mercedes to negotiate a deal with Hamilton âIâm sure Totoâs looking to use it to perhaps negotiate Lewisâs contract in some way, shape, or form. So, it will be fascinating to see how it plays out, but itâs great to see another youngster getting that chance and opportunityâ Wolff then explained how Hamiltonâs recent diagnosis has affected the contract negotiation timeline âThe timeline is being pushed back until he recovers. We know that we need to get it done â pretty well aware both of us â but the priority now is of him getting back on his feet and being [Covid] negative. Then we will meet or Zoom in order to put pen to paperâ He then revealed if George Russellâs outing with Mercedes will be used as leverage âNo. We know what we have with Lewis and he knows what he has with the team. Such a situation would never be utilized as some kind of bargaining power, neither by him nor by usâ He signed off by explaining why nothing that happens in Sakhir or at Abu Dhabi will have any effect on the contract negotiations with Hamilton âI respect very much who he is and how he drives, his records, and whatever happens this weekend or next has no influence on our talksâ Fast Feed F2 driver Yuki Tsunoda feels that he has âto work even harder to become likeâ Anthoine Hubert and added that âit is an honour to receiveâ the Anthoine Hubert Award Red Bullâs Alex Albon revealed that âit's very clear where the deficit toâ his teammate Max Verstappen is and that he âcould tellâ where he âwas slow without looking at the dataâ McLarenâs Carlos Sainz has explained that George Russellâs stint with Mercedes âdemonstrates what Formula 1 is missing out from, by having cars that are two seconds apart He added that âpretty much the whole grid could be within three tenths of a second because of the talent there is on the gridâ He further stated that âit's a shame that a guy that is fighting for P15 every weekend, suddenly when you put him in a race winning car, he's 20 thousandths off poleâ He also feels that F1 can create âa much more incredible show ifâ they âcould level the playing field a bit more and allow the driver to make more of a differenceâ Outgoing Haas driver Romain Grosjean had earlier stated that he will âcall every F1 team to see if they want to organize a private test in Januaryâ if he was not able to take part in the race in Abu Dhabi Now that it has been confirmed that he wonât take part in the final race this season, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has confirmed that if they âget permission to do that and the other teamsâ Grosjean âhas driven with don't give him that optionâ, Mercedes âwillâ Red Bullâs Max Verstappen feels that Ferrari driver Charles Leclercâs lunge during the Sakhir GP that ended both their races prematurely âwas totally unnecessaryâ He further thinks âit was stupid and it shouldn't have happenedâ Will Russell be used a bargaining tool in Mercedes negotiations with Hamilton?
With both seats at Haas being filled up for 2021, Red Bullâs second seat remains the only real uncertainty as far as the driver market for next year is concerned. Some have suggested that after a lackluster year, Alex Albon the current holder of that seat could be demoted to Red Bullâs sister team AlphaTauri. Christian Horner has now revealed if that is a possibility Link to poll: https://www.youtube.com/post/Ugx9o65lSGRur3_eo-h4AaABCQ 0:00 - Red Bull Or Bust For Albon 1:21 - Fast Feed I'm your host Dillon Shelley and first up on Formula World: Red Bull Or Bust For Albon Horner began by explaining how Albon has been closer to his teammate Max Verstappen than his predecessor at Red Bull â Pierre Gasly was âI think you should look at how Max has developed in recent years. If you look at his average, Alex's average is closer to Max than Pierre last yearâ He then explained what Albon has to do to hold on to his seat at Red Bull â[He has] to demonstrate heâs absolutely the right guy to be in that car alongside Max next year. And weâre giving him all the support we possibly can to achieve that goalâ He further explained how Albon has a long-term contract with Red Bull âHeâs on a long-term agreement, as all Red Bull drivers are when they join the team. Our focus at the moment is on the race seat and giving him the opportunity to demonstrate he is making significant progressâ He signed off by revealing if Albon could end up at AlphaTauri âI donât believe he forms part of [AlphaTauri team boss] Franzâs [Tost] plans for next year, so itâs very much a Red Bull seat or a year on the benchâ Fast Feed Newly crowned Formula 2 champion and future F1 driver Mick Schumacher thinks âitâs very important. Bringing a championship title with you on your CV into F1, that is great â He added that he âwanted to achieve somethingâ himself and he âwanted to prove toâ himself that heâs âhere for a reasonâ Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff pointed out that they âhave seen tests that were negative within ten days, soâ he thinks his driver Lewis Hamilton returning for the race in Abu Dhabi âis perfectly feasibleâ He added that âmany athletes have tested positive for a long time after any symptoms and after theyâve been in any way infectious â but this is something the FIA needs to look into anywayâ Honda F1 boss Toyoharu Tanabe feels that âthere is still room for improvement on both the PU and chassis sideâ of all four Honda-powered cars Outgoing Haas driver Romain Grosjean feels that âif you have experienced whatâ he âexperienced then, it is your job to helpâ with improving safety in motorsports He also revealed that FIA president Jean Todt had asked him if he remembers âsaying it was a bad day for Formula 1 when the halo was introducedâ He replied by saying that he remembers âand it's only stupid people that don't change their mind.â The halo is the best thingâ and that he âwouldn't race any car without a haloâ He further revealed that even though he was looking for opportunities to race outside F1 next year, the âpriority now is a bit differentâ He also explained that if he doesn't ârace in 2021â, he'll âbe cycling, kitesurfing, spending time withâ his âkids, enjoying life and having time off whichâ he hasn't had since he âwas 17â Outgoing Racing Point driver Sergio Perez has clarified that when he was pictured speaking to Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko he âonly greeted himâ and added that âas they said, the decision will be taken in Abu Dhabiâ Haas team principal Guenther Steiner feels that âthe most important thing was thatâ his future driver Nikita Mazepin âgot his super licenseâ as âthere was a small chance he wouldn't make itâ Do you think the halo has now proven to be worth having?
A run of misfortune and Lewis Hamiltonâs sublime form this season has meant that his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas sits 131 points behind him. Many feel that Bottas will face another stern test in the form of George Russell standing in for the recuperating Lewis Hamilton. Bottas has now explained how he would react if Russell were to best him at the Sakhir GP Link to poll: https://www.youtube.com/post/UgzOOOm0yiuohFgfi3V4AaABCQ 0:00 - Bottas Agrees It Wonât Look Good If Russell Beat Him on Mercedes Debut 1:45 - Fast Feed I'm your host Dillon Shelley and first up on Formula World: Bottas Agrees It Wonât Look Good If Russell Beat Him on Mercedes Debut Bottas began by explaining how it wonât look good if he were to be beaten fair and square by Russell on his first outing with Mercedes âI don't really know what to say to that question. I haven't thought [about] it in that sense and if I have to give some kind of answer I say if he beats me, yeah for sure it wouldn't look so good on me if I have a normal race and if he beats me fair and square. So obviously I [will] try to avoid thatâ He then added that it wonât weigh on him too much as that is not how he approaches a race weekend âBut I am not a person who thinks on that side of things. I try to turn things into a motivation and through positive thinking. That's my mindset for this weekendâ He then explained how it is the press that tries to create drama while also explaining how it will be a good learning experience for Russell âI know that [the media] like to speculate things and create drama and 'showdowns' etc. But I doubt George thinks that way and at least I don't. I think it's a great opportunity for George, a great opportunity to learn a lot and to show what we can do with the teamâ "And from my side, as a racing driver of course you always want to be ahead of your teammate â whether it's Lewis Hamilton or George Russell or anyone else, it doesn't matterâ He signed off by revealing his true motivation for the remaining three races âAnd I also have a job to do for the last three races of the season â I have my own motivation, which is trying to win the remaining racesâ Fast Feed Former F1 driver Nick Heidfeld feels that âit is all the more importantâ for Haasâ recovering driver Romain Grosjean âto get back into the car as quickly as possibleâ F2 driver Louis Deletraz has praised Williams and Mercedes for choosing drivers âbased on pure talentâ and added that âitâs nice to see a team with respect to its driversâ in an apparent dig at Haas choosing Nikita Mazepin Haas team principal Guenther Steiner âsaw that Deletraz was not happy. But there are undoubtedly a lot of other drivers who wanted the seat. He's just one of manyâ Nikita Mazepin could theoretically still end up with not enough super license points to drive in F1 but Steiner firmly believes âhe will just make the points necessary for his super-licenseâ He also added that it was â'Ferrariâ that âdecided that Mick [Schumacher] would be the one to be promoted from the juniors and of course that was fine forâ Steiner Mick, meanwhile, stated that âfour and seven are two of the numbers that he really likesâ and since âboth of them were takenâ, he thinks â47 was the best choiceâ He further elaborated that 4 was the number with which he won his F3 championship and 7 because of his fatherâs seven world championships Stephane Cohen, CEO of Bell helmets has stated that Grosjeanâs âhelmet performed exactly what is expected in such conditions. The fire resistance was as expected and the visor was also perfect. The only thing that had melted were the tear-offsâ Max Verstappen has suggested that the Netflix documentary series Drive to Survive contains âa lot of 'faked'â footage as some things he âsaid in Australia or Austriaâ were âused for another Grand Prix to make it a bit more excitingâ Honda F1 boss Toyoharu Tanabe is of the opinion âwith a short lap and the many straights, it will be vital for teams to select the right moment to send the cars out on track especially during qualifyingâ Last weekâs double podium for Red Bull was their first one since Malaysia 2017 and their driver Max Verstappen âwas pretty surprised how long itâs beenâ His teammate Alex Albon has said that âlooking back at tracks like Turkey and Mugello, these 'different' kind of tracks tend to make for great races so hopefully that's the case this weekendâ Do you like the Netflix series âDrive to Surviveâ?
The final piece of the driver market puzzle rests with Red Bull. Their driver Alex Albon has been having a lacklustre year where he has often been outpaced by drivers from the midfield teams during qualifying which has also meant that he has finished behind Max Verstappen in every single race that Verstappen has completed. Bahrain seemed to be heading in a similar direction afters he crashed heavily during FP2 but he had one of his more impressive weekends yet after he qualified right behind his teammate and finished on the podium thanks to a late retirement for Racing Pointâs Sergio who is in contention for Albonâs seat at Red Bull. Team principal Christian Horner and teammate Max Verstappen have now spoken on whether this has helped Albon Link to poll: https://www.youtube.com/post/UgywtUS-1pU1b_VwaF94AaABCQ 0:00 - Horner and Verstappen Unexpected Reactions To Alex Albonâ Podium 1:58 - Fast Feed I'm your host Dillon Shelley and first up on Formula World: Horner and Verstappen Unexpected Reactions To Alex Albonâ Podium After the race, Horner summarized the race that saw Perez retire with a turbo issue while in third place and with just three laps to go allowing Albon to get on the podium âSergio's bad luck was Alex's luck. He had a good start and it's not often that you see a Mercedes engine do something like that. It's unlucky for him, but nice for Alexâ Horner then reiterated that they want to give Alex a chance and that no decision will be made just yet âYou have to remember that Sergio Perez drove for me in Formula 2. He is a very strong driver. But I've always said that our priority is to give Alex a real chance. No decision will be made until after the final race. We're giving him every chance. We want him to succeedâ He then confirmed that they are still considering Perez for 2021 âDays like today help him [Albon] but there's still two races. Sergio is doing the best job he can so he remains under consideration. Today was Alex's good fortune, he had a good day today and there's still two further races to goâ Meanwhile, Max Verstappen was asked what he thought about Albonâs podium and he did not hold back with his reply to Ziggo Sports âI don't think that if you drive 30 or 40 seconds behind your teammate, that's very good. I can just be honest about that, right? It was a shame for Checo [Perez] too, because I think he drove a very strong race. It's nice for Alex that he is on the podiumâ Fast Feed Former F1 driver turned Dutch analyst Robert Doornbos feels that Max Verstappen âdoesn't decide in the end eitherâ who his teammate will be âalthough he certainly has a vote on that seatâ Honda F1 boss Toyoharu Tanabe pointed out that they âhave not seen a crash like that for many years, but it proved how safe the current Formula 1 cars areâ He added that âit was a solid performance from Red Bull and it was great to see both drivers on the podiumâ He further feels that âit was a positive start to this final triple-header with the added bonus of Max taking the raceâs fastest lapâ Christian Horner feels that âfive years ago, a driver would not have survived that incidentâ He added that sometimes they âgive the FIA a hard time. The halo came under criticism, hats off to them because Romain Grosjean owes his life to those measuresâ He further elaborated that it was ânot just the car, but the circuitâ and âthe way the marshals dealt with itâ that was impressive Max Verstappen added that he âwasn't in favor of that Halo at first because it didn't look good, but today it has saved someone's lifeâ He also feels that his team wasnât âsharp with the strategyâ in Bahrain Max elaborated by saying that they âlet Mercedes go in first, whichâ he doesn't âunderstand. Then comes another slow pit stop and then another pit stop thatâ he didn't âquite understandâ either Ferrariâs Sebastian Vettel feels that âthe guardrail should not fail and the car shouldnât catch fire in that fashionâ F1âs managing director Ross Brawn agreed that there were âa number of things that shouldnât have happened. The fire was worrying and the split in the barrier was worryingâ Racing Pointâs Sergio Perez has confirmed that losing a podium with just three laps to go due to an engine failure âis hard to digest, forâ him and for his âteamâ He, however, feels that âitâs just a trophy. What is important is that Grosjean is good, heâs fine and he can be back with his familyâ Did this podium save Albonâs F1 career?
Haas driver Romain Grosjeanâs crash on the opening lap of the Bahrain GP has been the focal point of many discussions in the F1 world. Drivers and team personnel have all been grateful that Grosjean managed to come out of it all with just a few burns and minor injuries. Renaultâs Daniel Ricciardo, however, wasnât too pleased with how the television side of things were handled and he has now elaborated on this while speaking to F1 TV Link to poll: https://www.youtube.com/post/UgzjuGHwYAwD6VDlAuB4AaABCQ 0:00 - Emotional Ricciardo Rips Into F1 For âPoorly Handledâ Grosjean Crash 1:17 - Fast Feed I'm your host Dillon Shelley and first up on Formula World: Emotional Ricciardo Rips Into F1 For âPoorly Handledâ Grosjean Crash Ricciardo started off by explaining why he is disappointed with F1 âIâm disgusted and disappointed with Formula 1 for showing or choosing the way to show it as they did, and broadcast replays after replays after replays of the fire, and his car split in half. And then, like thatâs not enough, they go to his onboardâ âWhy do we need to see this? Weâre competing again in an hour. His family has to keep watching that. All our families have to keep watching that. And youâre f*****g with everyoneâs emotions. Itâs really unfair. Itâs not entertainmentâ He signed off by suggesting that the footage of the crash was shown far too soon âIt was very very poorly handled and it felt like a game. Weâre lucky heâs here but it could have been a different story and to show it like itâs something from Hollywood, itâs not cool. Choose to do that tomorrow, but not todayâ Fast Feed Williamsâ George Russell has stated that âif the halo hadn't been there, things would have turned out completely different. The wayâ Grosjean âwalked away from the wreckage was unbelievableâ Ferrariâs Charles Leclerc added that when he âsaw the accidentâ, he âcouldn't believeâ Romain âran out of the carâ FIA race director Michael Masi stated that âcredit where credit is due to Ian Roberts and Alan van der Merweâ the drivers of the medical car He added that âas the FIAâ, they âwill look at it all and undertake a full investigation of the whole incident and of whatâ they âcan learn be it car safety, driver equipment and circuit safetyâ He further stated that âthe survival cell did what it was supposed to do and kept the driver safe. The halo also did its jobâ Haas team principal Guenther Steiner feels that knowing Grosjean he would âabsolutelyâ want âto come backâ for the second race in Bahrain Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff doesnât âeven want to imagine how this accident would have ended a few years ago. But even at a time when safety is high, it is still a very dangerous sportâ Romain Grosjean, meanwhile, stated that he âwasn't for the halo a few years ago, butâ he now thinks âit's the greatest thing in F1â 2020 world champion Lewis Hamilton suggested that the drivers are ânot the safety regulatorsâ and that theyâre âhere to do a jobâ when asked if they had doubts about taking part in the race after Grosjeanâs crash Red Bullâs Max Verstappen added to that by saying that he doesnât âget whyâ a driver âwouldnât race. Ifâ he âwould be the team bossâ, he âwould kickâ such a driver âout of the seatâ He also feels that his âcar seems to work very well here. So maybeâ they âcan find some pace with the extra corners on the other trackâ Red Bullâs Alex Albon felt like he âwas getting better and better in the last few racesâ and his podium in Bahrain âis another step forwardâ Former F1 driver turned commentator Martin Brundle thinks âthat if Red Bull do change Albon, it's most likely going to be Sergio Perezâ Did F1 appropriately handle the replays of the Grosjean crash?
