Every year, ESPN's hoops department ranks the top 100 players in the NBA. Every year, it causes a little bit of controversy, because people tend to get really worked up about rankings and lists. But while they're certainly arguable and definitely easy to overrate (does it really matter if someone is the 7th best player or the 9th, the 58th or the 62nd?) lists like these can be instructive. Particularly in trying to figure out roster depth around the league, and how different teams compare to each other. So how do the Lakers stack up? Well, they're the only team with two players in the top 10 - Anthony Davis (10) and LeBron James (9). Austin Reaves comes in at 66. And that's it. Many teams have more guys in the top 100 (Denver has four, the Knicks, surprisingly, have five). But when you start to peel back more layers, it's pretty clear the Lakers have a high end roster with a ton of depth. How many players who are average or above (don't poo poo average - half the league is below it) do the Lakers have in their rotation? Well, all of them. James, Davis, Hachimura, Russell, Reaves, Vincent, Wood, Prince, Vanderbilt and, if things progress, Max Christie as well. But they're at least nine deep with average or above or well above. If that's your roster, your roster is good. Speaking of Russell, after Wednesday's win in Anaheim, he talked about his defense and acknowledged that it's a big part of the reason he was taken off the floor in the postseason, especially against Denver. (His horrendous shooting didn't help, either.) He knows that has to get better if he wants not only to be a four-quarter contributor in the playoffs for the Lakers this year, but also to re-establish his value across the league. Finally, The Athletic's John Hollinger put out a column this week highlighting players on good teams who could play important roles, but are relatively unknown to most basketball fans. On that list? Christie. When we look back on that column in the spring, how likely is it that he'll be correct? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: NBA Rank - LeBron 9, AD 10 and Reaves 66. SEGMENT 2: How LA's depth stacks up. SEGMENT 3: Is Christie a legitimate breakout candidate? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Ok, so the NBA's GM Survey was released Tuesday, and while this space isn't one for homerism... Anthony Davis is simply not getting the respect he deserves on the defensive end. Start scrolling through the categories, and you find that Davis is either further down the voting lists than he should be, or simply isn't included at all. And while it's understood that at different times over the course of his career he hasn't quite met the moment... did anyone watch the playoffs last season? Davis was the best defender throughout, until the Lakers were eliminated. In three series against three very different opponents, he was dominant on that side of the ball. Yet in this year's preseason GM polling, it garnered him surprisingly little love. Why, exactly? What's going on here? And while we're here, did LeBron's basketball IQ go down over the summer? Meanwhile, the Lakers took 55 3-pointers on Monday against the Nets in Vegas. That's a ton, obviously more than they'll be hoisting on a nightly basis in the real games, but if the Lakers shoot the ball as they have over the first two games of the exhibition season, how much perimeter shooting should we expect? What might the offense look like? And will Davis be among the long range bombers? Yes, if Darvin Ham gets a vote. He said at practice Tuesday he'd like to see Davis taking even five or six a game! Six! Needless to say, this is more volume, by a ton, than Davis has ever had, and we're talking about someone who was well under 20 percent behind the arc last season. Does he really want Davis shooting that much, or is there another dynamic at play? And what about Christian Wood? What exactly does Ham want to see from Wood on the defensive side to start proving people wrong? What's been missing? Finally, does Taurean Prince think he should start? Well, he won't say exactly. Except yeah, he's kind of saying. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Ham wants Davis to be shooting a lot of 3's. SEGMENT 2: Christian Wood's defense and Taurean Prince's thoughts on starting. SEGMENT 3: Why so much disrespect for Anthony Davis among NBA GMs? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Lakers got some strong frontline performances in their preseason opener Saturday against the Warriors, as D'Angelo Russell ...
LeBron James noted Thursday that he won't be playing in the preseason opener on Saturday in San Francisco, but he does plan ...
Because the Lakers are fairly set heading into the 2023-24 season - the primary members of the rotation are more or less set, there are no big controversies, no huge position battles - fans are intensely curious about the one big thing that isn't yet settled: Who's gonna start at small forward? Darvin Ham, not surprisingly, hasn't yet committed to answering that question - they haven't even had three practices or played a preseason game - but different players are getting a chance to audition for that spot. Jarred Vanderbilt, Taurean Prince and Rui Hachimura will all get reps with the named starters (Russell, Reaves, James, Davis). Ham's decision will probably be less about who "wins", and rather which player makes the most sense with that group, and how the choice impacts the rest of the rotation. Which combinations in the second unit would make the most sense? Well, you can't always put those together as easily if one of those dudes is a starter. The good news? Nobody in that crew is going to complain if they're not in the opening five. Hachimura has already made it clear he's much more concerned about finishing games than starting them. Other things to watch: Anthony Davis. His jumper has been receiving a fair amount of attention, with Reaves praising it on one of the many, many podcasts on which he's appeared. The perception is that Davis's outside game has fallen off over the last couple of seasons... but is that really the case? 3-point shooting, for sure, but is that the only thing that matters? Does it really matter anymore if Davis stretches a defense all the way past the arc? It seems like he's a lot less interested in that part of his game, based on shot attempts over the last few seasons. Finally, Denver head coach Michael Malone said Wednesday that he's not paying attention to the Lakers, and hasn't heard what players have been saying about having a little extra interest and motivation to play his Nuggets following all the post-playoffs chatter this summer. From Denver. Mostly from Malone. He was very complimentary towards the Lakers... but is he really being serious? Just another reminder, whether talking about the Lakers or other teams, never ever expect the things they say to motivate their team, frame the challenge or anything similar to actually reflect reality. That's not how this works. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Who is going to start at small forward? SEGMENT 2: What are the tradeoffs Ham is balancing? SEGMENT 3: AD's jumper and Mike Malone's amnesia. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Lakers kicked off training camp with Media Day on Monday, and man alive, there was plenty of interesting stuff on the agenda ...
Next summer, LeBron James will have finished his 21st season, and will be pushing 40 years old. Anthony Davis will be a year ...
Team USA suffered some real embarrassment in the World Cup, finishing without a medal of any color following the loss to Canada in the bronze medal game over the weekend. And when Team USA loses with less than its best, typically that's the bat signal for the Avengers to assemble and start getting ready for the next big tournament. In this case, it's the biggest tourney of all - the 2024 Paris Olympics, and the Avengers, led by LeBron James, have reportedly responded. That's LeBron, Steph, KD, AD, Draymond... even CP3 was noted in the report (as if he has any business playing on a team like that at this point in his career). Fortunately, other players like Devin Booker, De'Aaron Fox and Jayson Tatum are also included in the group, keeping it from going full into a hoops version of The Expendables, but it's still an older group. But more importantly for Lakers fans, do you want LeBron playing in this tournament, following what everyone hopes will be a long season with a deep playoff run, leading into an option year (we all assume) he'll pick up? Pushing 40? Or are we thinking of this wrong? Does his enthusiasm for playing in the Olympics signal that maybe he's ready to go out with a bang? That maybe he won't be hanging on as long, especially now that it looks like Bronny, while on the road to recovery, might not be ready to enter the Draft next year? Meanwhile, in related news, the NBA is cracking down on rest. Load management, specifically, discussing rules that will seriously raise the bar on the threshold for allowing players - or the stars, at least - to miss games just to have a breather. They would push players to avoid doing it on national TV games and during the in-season tourney, preferably not on the road, and only one "star" player can sit at a time. And if you're a team that's trying to sit guys to lose games at the end of the year? Better come up with a better justification than has happened in the past. Now, that could mean a lot more players coming down with sudden bouts of back spasms or tendinitis or flu or whatever, but at the least, the NBA is going to require they do some work. The Lakers have two stars. That get hurt a lot. That need rest. How might these rules impact them this season? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: LeBron says he's going to play in the Olympics. Does this signal something about how much longer he's planning to play? SEGMENT 2: Do you want LeBron to play? Or AD for that matter? SEGMENT 3: New rules on load management, and how they impact the Lakers. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!
