Is LeBron James Playing in the 2024 Olympics? Anthony Davis, Too? Is That a Good Idea?
Team USA suffered some real embarrassment in the World Cup, finishing without a medal of any color following the loss to Canada in the bronze medal game over the weekend. And when Team USA loses with less than its best, typically that's the bat signal for the Avengers to assemble and start getting ready for the next big tournament. In this case, it's the biggest tourney of all - the 2024 Paris Olympics, and the Avengers, led by LeBron James, have reportedly responded. That's LeBron, Steph, KD, AD, Draymond... even CP3 was noted in the report (as if he has any business playing on a team like that at this point in his career). Fortunately, other players like Devin Booker, De'Aaron Fox and Jayson Tatum are also included in the group, keeping it from going full into a hoops version of The Expendables, but it's still an older group. But more importantly for Lakers fans, do you want LeBron playing in this tournament, following what everyone hopes will be a long season with a deep playoff run, leading into an option year (we all assume) he'll pick up? Pushing 40? Or are we thinking of this wrong? Does his enthusiasm for playing in the Olympics signal that maybe he's ready to go out with a bang? That maybe he won't be hanging on as long, especially now that it looks like Bronny, while on the road to recovery, might not be ready to enter the Draft next year? Meanwhile, in related news, the NBA is cracking down on rest. Load management, specifically, discussing rules that will seriously raise the bar on the threshold for allowing players - or the stars, at least - to miss games just to have a breather. They would push players to avoid doing it on national TV games and during the in-season tourney, preferably not on the road, and only one "star" player can sit at a time. And if you're a team that's trying to sit guys to lose games at the end of the year? Better come up with a better justification than has happened in the past. Now, that could mean a lot more players coming down with sudden bouts of back spasms or tendinitis or flu or whatever, but at the least, the NBA is going to require they do some work. The Lakers have two stars. That get hurt a lot. That need rest. How might these rules impact them this season? Lakers owner Jeanie Buss made it clear in a recent interview that LeBron James will have his number retired by the Lakers once his playing days are over. Whether he'll have to wait to formally enter the Hall of Fame, which is itself a requirement for jersey retirement with this franchise, we'll wait and see. (I think we can all agree it would be safe for the Lakers to raise his number before the HOF actually performs the ceremony - he seems like a pretty safe bet for admission...) An Extension for Anthony Davis and the Lakers this offseason? Plus, the Lakers-Nuggets Feud Grows!
With most of the big free agent work done, attention can turn to other important issues central to the team's future. Like what's coming for Anthony Davis. The Lakers star is eligible for a new contract extension before the season, one that could add another three years and nearly $168 million to his contract. ESPN's Dave McMenamin reports the Lakers are likely to come to some sort of arrangement with A.D. before the season starts - details TBD. Obviously those details matter, but bigger picture, it raises all kinds of questions about not only the Lakers and their future (this would be the first deal taking Davis well beyond the LeBron James Timeline, Davis will be well into his 30s, and so on) but the way contracts like this will be handled across the league. With the new CBA, will teams automatically give out these extensions/max contracts to star players? Is this something the Lakers should automatically do? Would they be better off letting that deal play out? How much risk is there in giving an injury prone guy like that so much money going into his 30s? How much risk is there not giving him that contract extension? Meanwhile, the Denver Nuggets continue demonstrating how much they relished beating the Lakers en route to the first title in that franchise's history. It mattered. A lot. They talked about it after they won. At the parade. In subsequent interviews, and so on. This week now-former Nugget Bruce Brown noted how intense and locked in Denver was in that series, and that they never felt threatened in any of the games despite close scores. So do we have a genuine rivalry at this point? Both teams ought to be very good next year, which will make those games meaningful. Certainly a third postseason go-round is possible. It's easy to hope for, because the Lakers have been without any real rivalries for a few years, now. They were, obviously, really bad for a long stretch, and even when LeBron and Davis arrived, the all-or-nothing yo-yo they've been on has made it hard to establish those sorts of rivalries. In August, the Lakers can give Anthony Davis a three-year extension worth $167 million. The decision of whether to give it to him, or risk him potentially opting out of his deal after next season and walking as a free agent, is a tricky one. On the one hand, the Lakers will be hard pressed to find a player better than him, even while factoring in additional age and mileage. Frustrating as he occasionally is, Davis is still in the NBA's elite tier, and those guys are really, really hard to find. On the other hand, paying Davis over $55 million a year, pushing that past a realistic timeline for LeBron James, would make any GM nervous. Would it be better for the Lakers to end the Davis Era at the same time the LeBron Era closes? There's risk everywhere, no question. So what's the right play, here?
