Has the LeBron James/Anthony Davis Window Closed for the Lakers?
The Lakers had a lousy weekend. Saturday's game was marred by an eye injury to Anthony Davis, one that has him listed as questionable for tonight's game at home vs. Atlanta. Meanwhile, the Lakers lost to Golden State, and the entire league suffered thanks to some horrible delays in replay work and a malfunctioning shot clock. I really was an ugly evening, all around. Now, though, the Lakers find themselves in 10th place in the West, with some chance still to move up (at least to nine, if they can win some games, since they still have one more against the Warriors), and if it's going to happen, it'll be over the next stretch of games, all but a couple of which are against not just middling teams, but genuinely bad ones. Again, starting tonight with Atlanta. The Lakers need to win these games not just because of seeding, but because nearly 70 games in, we're still not at a place where the Lakers can say they've ripped off eight wins in a row, or 10 of 12, or something that indicates a level of sustained excellence, and teams that can't do that don't win championships. Of course, some wonder if that championship window has already been closed. Has the title era for LeBron and AD already passed? Was last year their last best shot? Did it close with the Westbrook deal? Are the Lakers in position to make the kind of improvements that are so clearly needed in order to rise to the level of the Denvers of the world? Lakers Need Better Anthony Davis vs. Thunder After Passive Night vs. Nuggets. And Better Darvin Ham.
Saturday's loss to Denver was a frustrating one for Lakers fans (and Lakers players, and Lakers coaches) because it followed a pattern that has been well-established in games between LA and Denver - namely one where the Lakers play well, stay close, and then get totally outclassed in the final five minutes of the game. It's super annoying! But with the Lakers staring down another six consecutive games against playoff caliber opponents (including the high seeded and/or red hot variety) it's important to think of any positives they can pull, because they're going to need the good stuff to continue in order to find the level of success required to navigate these games, starting tonight against Oklahoma City at the Crypt. Now the Lakers actually match up reasonably well against the Thunder, especially when everyone is healthy. So despite the fact that the Thunder currently lead the conference by percentage points over Minnesota, this is a winnable game. Not a gimme by any stretch, but winnable. Especially if Anthony Davis is more aggressive offensively than he was against the Nuggets. This, of course, if the Lakers can navigate some of the questionable decisions Darvin Ham has made of late. We review some in the Denver game. Did the common criticisms (sitting D'Angelo Russell for most of the 4th, slow timeout trigger, etc.) have a little more logic behind them with a day or so to marinate? Lakers-Clippers Preview: Paul George: Out. Anthony Davis (Probably) In. Plus, Bronny/LeBron's Future
The Lakers face a critical game tonight against the Clippers, and it comes at a time when the vibes again have turned ominous and the team needs to change the conversation almost as much as it needs wins for practical reasons. The schedule over the next few weeks (and through the end of the year, really) is brutal. Teams are starting to elevate their play, and based on what we've seen so far since the ASB, the Lakers aren't prepared to keep up. But as we've learned throughout the year, sometimes a team is just 48 minutes away from changing the mood considerably. The Lakers will get a crack at a Clippers team playing without Paul George, and that quietly is suffering through a down patch of their own. The Lakers should have Anthony Davis (though he skipped practice Tuesday with an upper respiratory issue, he's probable for tonight) and Cam Reddish, who adds size to the wing against a team where that sort of thing is very, very useful. Can Davis avoid the early foul trouble that's plagued him of late? Can the Lakers keep Ivica Zubac off the glass? These are key questions. As is the one about the lack of production of late from the supporting cast. The Lakers need more. Much more, from some (think Spencer Dinwiddie). Overall, a disappointing group needs to find its stride quickly. This, likely is the team the Lakers will have going forward, aside from the hopeful return of Christian Wood over the next week or two. Finally, Bronny James was dropped from ESPN's Mock Draft for this summer. No surprise, given the context, but still noteworthy and something that prompted a response from his pop. What to make of it? And what does any of this have to do with LeBron's future in LA, which according to reports James might want to extend longer than folks expected? LeBron James (ankle) Out Tonight vs. Warriors, Plus 4 Reasons to Be Optimistic for the Stretch Run
The Lakers kick off the second half of the season tonight in San Francisco against the Warriors, and they'll do it without LeBron James. He was downgraded to "out" on Wednesday with a bum ankle, well ahead of tonight's tip. It was something that LeBron himself foreshadowed at the All Star Game, noting that his treatment is ongoing and could keep him out. Could has become will. Does this mean he'll be available for Friday's game vs. San Antonio? We'll find out soon enough. It's an injury the Lakers reportedly don't think is super serious, but hope the treatment will let James finish the season strong. In the meantime, it should be a barnburner against a revitalized Warriors team that has turned things around, and certainly remembers how they lost an epic nationally televised battle with the Lakers only a couple weeks back. Even without James in the lineup, the Lakers do kick off the stretch run with reasons to be optimistic about their chances to make a little noise going forward. There are no guarantees, health will be paramount and so on and so on ... but look under the hood a little and you can see the Lakers have some stuff going for them. The Lakers kicked off a challenging road trip on Saturday in Cleveland, and wouldn't you know it? The Cavs got healthy just in time for LA's arrival. This is a good team when everyone's available, ramping up the degree of difficulty. Especially given that the team was missing Jared Vanderbilt, Gabe Vincent, Rui Hachimura and Cam Reddish. And the Lakers responded well, even on a night when LeBron James wasn't sharp. 22 points, but on 8-23 shooting, including 1-9 from the 3-point line. So instead of relying on James, which is what the Lakers had done for most of the season for damn near everything, they got big performances from everyone else. Anthony Davis? Massive. 32/13, with two steals and three blocks. Austin Reaves led the team with 10 dimes, and chipped in 15 points. Max Christie had easily his best game of the season, and was particularly influential on the defensive end. Christian Wood and Jaxson Hayes contributed. Taurean Prince found ways to chip in that weren't about perimeter shooting. It was a great team effort, and now the Lakers have won 7 of 9 and have a chance to make this a very good road trip. (And at the least, make it a trip that avoids disaster.)
