Elijah McGuire ran for 223 yards while Al Riles caught eight passes for 139 yards to lead Louisiana-Lafayette to a 28-23 Sun Belt Conference football win over the University of South Alabama at Cajun Field on Saturday.
The No. 6 seed Georgia Southern continued its stellar run at the 2016 Sun Belt Conference Baseball Championship with a 4-0 win against No. 2 seed South Alabama on Saturday to advance to its first-ever baseball tournament championship game. Georgia Southern (36-23) advances to the tournament’s winner-take-all championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT on ESPN3. The Eagles await their opponent as No. 1 seed UL Lafayette and No. 8 seed Arkansas State play at 12:30 p.m. CT in the other semifinal with an “if necessary” game to follow should the Red Wolves prevail in the first game. Both starters were sharp during their outings and both teams played stellar defense behind their hurlers in support. Georgia Southern freshman Brian Eichorn (5-2) threw 7 1/3 shutout innings with four strikeouts to lead the Eagles to the semifinal win. Sophomore Connor Simmons (2/3 IP) and freshman Chase Cohen closed out the game for Eichorn as each notched a strikeout over the final two frames. South Alabama senior Austin Bembnowski threw 7 1/3 scoreless innings and scattered six hits with four strikeouts.
No. 2 seed South Alabama advanced to the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Baseball Championship with a 3-0 win against No. 7 seed UT Arlington on Friday afternoon at Bobcat Ballpark. South Alabama junior Randy Bell threw a complete game, three-hitter on just 89 pitches and added two strikeouts. Bell did not allow a runner past second until the ninth inning, and allowed just one to advance past first heading into the frame. The Jaguars (40-19) turned three double plays in support of their starter. South Alabama advanced to the semifinals with the win and will face No. 6 seed Georgia Southern. By virtue of advancing from the loser’s bracket, the Jaguars must win two games against Georgia Southern to advance to the championship game. The first game is set for a 9 a.m. CT first pitch on Saturday with the “if necessary” game scheduled for 4 p.m. CT.
Sophomore Cheyanne Lyon laced a two-out, two-RBI double in the first inning to lead the No. 8 seed UL Monroe Warhawks past the No. 5 seed Georgia Southern Eagles in the first round of the 2016 Sun Belt Conference Softball Championship. The game was the first of two single elimination games of the tournament. UL Monroe (24-32) advances to face No. 4 seed Georgia State at 3 p.m. CT on Wednesday. The Eagles finished their season with a 30-27 overall record.
DeMondre Harvey had a career-high 21 points and UL Monroe advanced to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament final with an 82-71 victory over Texas-Arlington on Saturday. The second-seeded Warhawks (20-12) conceded the first 12 points of the game but responded with a 27-6 run and led the rest of the way. UL Monroe faces top-seeded Little Rock (28-4) on Sunday. Harvey was 9 of 9 from the floor with seven rebounds. Majok Deng had 18 points and Justin Roberson added 16 and eight assists for Louisiana-Monroe, which shot 50 percent from the floor, and 48 percent on 13-of-27 shooting from long range.
UT Arlington moved into the Sun Belt Championship semifinals by rallying past Texas State 72-63 Friday night at Lakefront Arena. The third-seeded Mavericks (23-9) will face No. 2 ULM (19-12) on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The Warhawks have yet to play in the league tournament after earning byes for the first two rounds. UTA played from behind for much of the contest against the No. 7 Bobcats. The Mavs wouldn't take their first lead until 8:01 remained, as Erick Neal hit two free throws for a 54-53 edge. Neal was instrumental down the stretch by getting to the rim and finding open teammates. The all-conference point guard finished with 12 points, 11 rebounds and six assists.
