Why Ricciardo’s Driving Style Isn’t Working
Why Ricciardo’s Driving Style Isn’t Working

Danny Ric has been struggling this year - on pace, consistency and overall results. And its not helped by his teammate Lando outperforming that car this season. At the moment, Lando has 48 points, to Daniels 11 - so Lando has brought in 82% of McLarens points this season. Then there is qualifying pace - on average, Lando is 6 tenths quicker - in the same car. (0.596) So I looked into what’s going on, but to understand that - we need to understand Ricciardo’s driving style. Because it will explain why he was so quick at Red Bull, but not at McLaren. — Quickly though, I need to mention that Danny has had some great results. With several podiums and even a win back in Monza. But what we’re looking at is one of the drivers with the worst records compared to their teammate - who is obviously working with the same tools. So really, it's the gap to Lando that is interesting here. — So what is Danny’s driving style like? Well, I have broken down a number of driving styles on this channel - and really, they are subtle points that allow the driver to get the car through the corner quickly. For example, Hamilton is incredible on the brakes. He is able to get the car stopped well, without losing time on exit. Vettel takes a more vee’d off line to rotate the car mid-corner, similar to Schumacher. But all of these driving styles tie in closely with the car they are driving. For example, Alonso back in 2005 and 2005 was driving a Renault with a really strong rear end and using tyres that were rock hard. So he induced understeer on the way into the corner, which heated the tyres and gave him the grip to pivot the car mid-corner and fire it out on exit. But he isn’t using that style at Alpine for example, as it would chew up the tyres and he would be pretty slow. — But, having said that - Danny was at his peak at Red Bull between 2014 and 2018. So let's look at his style then. The Red Bull was incredible aerodynamically, with more raw downforce than other teams (on the whole). But the Renault engine wasn’t great, so they were comparatively quick in the corners, but slower on the straights. ➤Follow Driver61 on: ➤ Instagram- @official_driver61 - https://bit.ly/D61Insta ➤TikTok - @official_driver61 - https://bit.ly/D61TikTok ➤ Follow Scott on: ➤ Twitter - https://twitter.com/scottkmansell ➤ Instagram - @official_driver61 - https://bit.ly/D61Insta #F1 #Ricciardo #McLaren

Russell Lucky or is Hamilton Slow? | F1 Lap Analysis

Join our F1 Mailing List! 👉 https://driver61.beehiiv.com/subscribe We get our data from F1 Tempo - go check them out! https://www.f1-tempo.com/ Hamilton and Russell - they haven’t been having the best season - but one has been pulling out a lead in the points. And whilst both have been having issues with the car - they have both battled it differently. So who is on top after five races? Who is getting more out of that Mercedes? The points say that Russell is on top - but do the lap times agree? We’ve gone over every lap, of every race and we want to show you what’s going on - in the data. So let’s get into it. — So first, Bahrain. To give some context, Mercedes were the third fastest car - with Red Bull and Ferrari being a way in front. Mercedes were apparently running the cars ‘over-winged’, meaning more downforce (and drag) than they actually wanted, and that was supposedly down to lack of parts. But both cars were immediately having bouncing problems, porpoising, on the straights, so had to run the ride heigh of their car, higher - which according to Toto cost them about half a second a lap. And that’s about where they were in quali pace. But here is how it all shook out in the race - these are the lap times of Lewis and George - compared to the pace setters, Max and Charles. You can see the Mercs were around half a second back on pace, across the entire Grand Prix - but actually didn’t see the same kind of tyre drop off that the front two teams did. Look at the end of each stint - here. Now according to Mercedes - the pace in the simulator is good. But, that’s still the simulator and doesnt account for the porpoising - and therefore the performance loss with the bouncing - and the increase in ride height they had to make to fix it. But fair play - they finished P3 and P4 after some dodgy pace (yes it’s down to both Red Bulls DNF-ing) - but they did maximise their results in Bahrain. And by all accounts - the pace between Lewis and George was very, very similar. George was less than a couple of seconds behind Lewis for the second half of the race, so he may have been faster - but we don’t know. ➤Follow Driver61 on: ➤ Instagram- @official_driver61 - https://bit.ly/D61Insta ➤TikTok - @official_driver61 - https://bit.ly/D61TikTok ➤ Follow Scott on: ➤ Twitter - https://twitter.com/scottkmansell ➤ Instagram - @official_driver61 - https://bit.ly/D61Insta ➤ Follow Callum on: ➤ TikTok - @callumraces https://tiktok.com/@callumraces ➤ Twitter - @callum_mcintyre https://twitter.com/@callum_mcintyre ➤ Instagram - @mcintyre.jpg https://www.instagram.com/mcintyre.jpg/ #Hamilton #Russell #Formula1

Awful pace, a car that was apparently ‘very very difficult to drive’ and a P14 and P15 for the two drivers. And that would have been P18 and 19 if the three Red Bull engines had held together. But they’ve had one hell of a resurgence, with Lando getting a podium in Imola and some strong results in Australia. So what have they changed for the Emilia Romagna GP? And where are they going from here? Well, this story with the McLaren starts in Bahrain - where we were all wondering if the McLarens were going to be the backmarkers for this year. They only beat Latifi and Hulk (in a car he had never driven before) - and yes the Red Bulls and Gasly who all DNF’d. If you look at Qualifying, their delta to the fastest cars in Qualifying was about a second and a half. Then, looking at race pace - the delta was a little bigger. Now, this is harder to tell in the race, with traffic, degrading tyres and the list goes on. But you can see that the McLaren is consistently a way off the pace. Lando said - ‘We don’t really have a good enough car to do better’ and explained that he had to push really hard just to keep up at the beginning, only then to deg the tyres and fall off the pack altogether. ➤Follow Driver61 on: ➤ Instagram- @official_driver61 - https://bit.ly/D61Insta ➤TikTok - @official_driver61 - https://bit.ly/D61TikTok ➤ Follow Scott on: ➤ Twitter - https://twitter.com/scottkmansell ➤ Instagram - @official_driver61 - https://bit.ly/D61Insta #Formula1 #McLaren #Driver61

The Weakness Ferrari Revealed in Imola
The Weakness Ferrari Revealed in Imola

Join our F1 Mailing List for a chance to win $1000! 👉 https://driver61.beehiiv.com/subscribe 🔧 Thanks to Scarbs for joining us once again! Go follow him on Twitter for F1 Tech news! 👉 https://twitter.com/ScarbsTech That was a difficult weekend for Ferrari. Sainz out of the race on lap one and Leclerc in the barrier and recovering to only 6th position. So, what exactly happened to both drivers and what does it mean in the title fight? First up Sainz. He had his off in qualifying, ending up in the wall in Rivazza in Q2. He tried to carry a bit too much speed into the corner, having turned in on the kerb, which was likely a little damp, and the rear of his car didn’t want to stick. This was another mistake by Sainz, which cannot have done his confidence much good. Being able to predict what a car will do is so important to a driver, and when it doesn’t grip when you expect it to, it makes you drive a little bit below the limit, and therefore slower. Now, I’m not 100% on whether this spin was due to the kerb being damp or Carlos not predicting the balance of the Ferrari properly - either way the result was the same. Sainz then went on to have a good drive in the sprint, getting back up to 4th. However, his start for the Sunday race wasn’t great, getting overtaken by Norris and then being in a position where he was wheel to wheel with Ricciardo. Riccardo was ahead going down to turn one, but Sainz was much more confident on the brakes - which you can often be when you’re on the outside (this is where a little lockup or a bit too much speed won’t cause too much of an issue, like it might if you’re on the inside of another car). ➤Follow Driver61 on: ➤ Instagram- @official_driver61 - https://bit.ly/D61Insta ➤TikTok - @official_driver61 - https://bit.ly/D61TikTok ➤ Follow Scott on: ➤ Twitter - https://twitter.com/scottkmansell ➤ Instagram - @official_driver61 - https://bit.ly/D61Insta #Formula1 #ImolaGP #Driver61

Ferrari's Hidden Advantage
Ferrari's Hidden Advantage

Join our F1 Mailing List! 👉 https://driver61.beehiiv.com/subscribe Ferrari have a MASSIVE advantage this season, and it’s not just that their car is fast. They seem pretty untouchable. They’re quick on the straights, and through the slow corners and, over a lap, nobody can touch them. They seem to have solved the Porpoising issues, been able to adapt their car for the three (very different) circuits we’ve had so far, and been quick on every tyre they’ve run. But on top of that, they have been leveraging a couple of key advantages (and doing it very well). Let's get into it. 🔧 Thanks to Scarbs for joining us once again! Go follow him on Twitter for F1 Tech news! https://twitter.com/ScarbsTech The first thing to bear in mind is that Ferrari rocked up to the first test with a strong car. A very defined concept that they have been running ever since, they have made very few changes to it. And those little changes have all been for track-specific reasons. Whereas if you look at Mercedes, Red Bull (or any of the other teams for that matter), they have been making component upgrades, vast setup changes and different concepts on each of their cars. If you look back at Lewis and George’s cars in Jeddah, the cars were set up very differently. (And Lewis made sure we knew it) Whereas Ferrari have stuck to its original plan, and it paid off. They have been learning their car inside out, gaining valuable experience with it - without the disruption of big setup or performance changes. What was the Weird Light under Mercedes' Car? Australian GP
What was the Weird Light under Mercedes' Car? Australian GP

Join our F1 Mailing List! 👉 https://driver61.beehiiv.com/subscribe Don’t know if you were too awake for the Australian GP, but if you were - you would have spotted this bright light below Lewis Hamilton’s car. And it’s interesting stuff - really showing that Mercedes are still trying to fully understand their car. It’s well known that Mercedes are still trying to get down to the weight limit - with many people estimating that they are nearly 10 kilograms overweight. They even went over the car and chose areas to cut back on paint, saving them about 350 kilograms. So why did they then bolt on this shiny sensor that weighs about 1.5 kilos? Is it worth taking Lewis’ car further overweight? Lewis said this just after Qualifying - “I’ve got something on my car which makes the car a little heavier… hopefully, it will enable the team to gather more information from the race tomorrow” So what are they trying to measure? And will it pay off? From what we know, Mercedes have a couple of main issues. Porpoising (which we’ll get to), weight and drag. Starting with drag, Toto has admitted that you can go cutting back wing angles and other downforce (but also drag) producing elements - but that leaves them with less downforce than other teams. Not ideal. They can recoup this, but only by dropping the ride height - which then sparks off their porpoising issues. So that is the problem, they need to figure out their porpoising issues to then increase downforce and cut back on drag. So it’s an issue that compounds. The car bounces and the drivers struggle to drive on the limit and the balance is all over the place - so you raise the car up but that comes with its own performance penalty. You decrease downforce from the floor - so have to compensate with draggy downforce from the wings. You can actually see it, look at the front wing of Charles, then Lewis. And it’s the same for the rear wing. The difference is pretty huge. ➤ Join our Driver61 Community Discord! - https://discord.gg/driver61 ➤ Subscribe for more incredible motorsport: https://goo.gl/AbD2f9 ➤Follow us on: ➤ Instagram- @official_driver61 - https://bit.ly/D61Insta ➤TikTok - @official_driver61 - https://bit.ly/D61TikTok ➤ iPad Drawing sponsored by Concepts, you can get an exclusive free trial here! - https://concepts.app/driver61 AG1 by Athletic Greens is a comprehensive, all-in-one greens powder engineered to fill the nutritional gaps in your diet and support your body’s nutritional needs across four pillars of health: Gut health, Immune support, Energy and Recovery! Why Max's Red Bull Caught Fire in Australia
Why Max's Red Bull Caught Fire in Australia

Thanks to Scarbs once again for joining us! Follow him on Twitter - seriously, do it. https://twitter.com/ScarbsTech So Max has been robbed 38 points in three races, with two DNFs due to engine issues. And it’s not just max, in Bahrain Checo had an engine-induced Sbinala and Gasly’s car also got pretty toasty. So are all of these issues linked? Or is the Australia DNF a new issue? 2022 Australian Grand Prix Let’s get into it. ➤ Follow Scott on Twitter - https://twitter.com/scottkmansell ➤ Instagram - @official_driver61 - https://bit.ly/D61Insta ➤TikTok - @official_driver61 - https://bit.ly/D61TikTok First then, the issue in Bahrain was said to be a Fuel Lock, that was brought on by the late Safety car. Now, if you’ve worked on older cars you will know why this happens. It’s essentially where vapour (either fuel vapour or air) get trapped in the fuel system. And very often this can completely block the fuel lines - which caused Max and Checo’s engines to stop during the Bahrain Grand Prix. We expect to be down to the E10 fuel in these new cars - rather than a leaky pipe which typically what causes the same issue on older cars. And the E10 fuel really seems to be creating some issues for Red Bull powertrains. But really, it should be something they could fix pretty quickly - and when Max won in Saudi - we thought they had. ➤ Join our Driver61 Community Discord! - https://discord.gg/driver61 ➤ Subscribe for more incredible motorsport: https://goo.gl/AbD2f9 ➤ Subscribe to our Spanish Channel! After the race, Leclerc said: “It is hard racing, as we have seen with Max in the past. But I’m also an aggressive driver in the way I fight with others.” This will have been a strong message to Verstappen, so let’s look at it from each driver’s perspective. By lap 17, Verstappen had caught Leclerc and made a strong move going down the pit straight - helped by the straight-line speed of the Red Bull. Leclerc defended pretty heavily, as much as he really could on the wide Bahrain circuit. I think here, he would have wanted to keep Max on the inside, off the racing line and in all of the dust and dirt. This way, Leclerc had a much better line through turn 1, cleaner - and grippier - tyres and DRS in the next section of track. He actually said that he wasn’t trying to be too late on the brakes into turn 1, as the DRS detection line was in the braking zone. As we know, this line which enables DRS in the next section if a driver is behind another when crossing it, so Leclerc was being pretty clever here, saying: “I expected it (the overtake) and actually I wanted it. Because I knew that if he wasn’t overtaking me there, he would overtake me on the run to Turn 4 with the DRS. “So I was on purpose braking very early into Turn 1 to be just behind in the DRS detection and to get it on the run to Turn 4 to get him back. It always worked out. ➤ Join our Driver61 Community Discord! - https://discord.gg/YCqFxF27VS ➤ Subscribe for more incredible motorsport: https://goo.gl/AbD2f9 ➤Follow us on: ➤ Instagram- @official_driver61 - https://bit.ly/D61Insta ➤TikTok - @official_driver61 - https://bit.ly/D61TikTok ➤ iPad Drawing sponsored by Concepts, you can get an exclusive free trial here! - https://concepts.app/driver61 📺 F1 Driver’s Technique Explained ➤ Senna’s bizarre technique: https://bit.ly/3lORK59 ➤ How Schumacher’s style won 7 championships: https://bit.ly/3527cVz ➤ Alonso’s strange steering: https://bit.ly/2Z7a93v ➤ How Verstappen will be F1 champion: https://bit.ly/3jK6L6n ➤ How Verstappen is so fast in the wet: https://bit.ly/32WMVhr 📺 F1 Engineering ➤ How F1 brakes work: https://bit.ly/3h0Whh0 ➤ How an F1 clutch works: https://bit.ly/3i0oDJM ➤ What’s inside an F1 gearbox: https://bit.ly/2DzMqRW ➤ How F1 teams change four tyres in two seconds: https://bit.ly/2QVpkIl 🏎️ Track & Racing Driver! ➤ Get a free report on your track driving: http://bit.ly/2LmYNBA ➤ Get faster on track with our FREE 25-part tutorial series:http://bit.ly/2PypIMK ➤ Our real-world training programmes: http://bit.ly/2ktjtgV 🏁 Sim Racers! ➤ My sim wheel: https://bit.ly/354BBlY ➤ My sim pedals: https://bit.ly/3eJckQo ➤ Our sim racing course: https://bit.ly/34WuV7p ➤ Get a free report on your track driving: http://bit.ly/2LmYNBA ➤ Driver61 Sim Racing Channel: http://bit.ly/2BMdk4B #F1 #Leclerc #BahrainGP
