With 8:02 remaining, this game was tied at 55-55 when Nick Sherod led the Spiders (23-7, 13-4 A-10) on a 25-8 run to put Davidson away. Sherod hit 4 three point FGs and a deuce to finish with 19 points to lead the Spiders scoring. Blake Francis gave able assistance. He scored 18 points, including 6 during the deciding final minutes. Richmond's defense held the hot shooting Wildcats to only 27% from 3FG (7-26). The Spiders also controlled the boards winning the battle 36-25. UR shot 49% from the field which included 42% from 3 point range. The win clinched Richmond a double bye in the A-10 Tournament and protected the Spiders position on the NCAA Tournament At-Large bid bubble.
The Patriot League's Fordham Rams come to Virginia to play the Richmond Spiders in UR's home opener. Both teams were defeated in week one by BCS/FBS opponents. Each had too many inconsistencies to pull an upset over their higher tiered opponents. Richmond coach Russ Huesman and Fordham coach John Conlin will both be looking for significant improvement in their squad's play. Surprisingly Richmond is an incredible 25+ point favorite.
Richmond (1-5) was probably the best team the Hoyas have played so far this season. The Spiders gave Georgetown (4-0) all they wanted in a hard fought 82-76 victory at the Robins Center. Demonte' Buckingham and Grant Golden led Richmond. Buckingham score 28 points on 9-12 from the field and 9-11 FT. Golden put in 24 points and had 10 RB for his first Spiders "double double." The struggling Spiders played their best game of the season so far at home in front of a raucous crowd.
The red hot St. Louis Billikens held Richmond to 23% from the field in this convincing A-10 win on the Spiders home court. The Spiders trailed by only 4 at the half 23-19 despite shooting only 21% from the field. However and almost 11 minute field goal drought in the second half allowed the Billikens to build a 17 point lead that Richmond could not overcome. St. Louis won despite shooting only 42% themselves and having 19 turnovers.
