April 30th, 1997 – After a terrific regular season that saw them finish first in the WHL with a 47-21-1 record, the Lethbridge Hurricanes entered the playoffs wanting to win it all, and that’s what they did. A first round sweep of the Prince Albert Raiders set up second round match up with the Moose Jaw Warriors. The Hurricanes and Warriors split the first four games, but the ‘Canes earned a 5-1 victory in Game 5 before winning the series with a 5-4 win in Moose Jaw. The ‘Canes then faced the Red Deer Rebels, dispatching them in five games to set up a WHL Finals date with the Seattle Thunderbirds. After outscoring the T-birds 14-4 in the first three games, the ‘Canes completed the sweep on April 30th with a 5-1 win in Seattle. Mike Josephson scored the eventual game winning goal 4:35 into the second period while Matt Demarski, Travis Brigley, Mark Smith and Darren Shakotko scored the others in the victory earning the Hurricanes their first, and only, WHL Championship.
March 18th, 2016 – Going into their final home game of the 2015-2016 regular season, the Lethbridge Hurricanes needed a victory to secure the team’s first division championship in 19 years. The ‘Canes eventually won the game 9-3 over the Medicine Hat Tigers to win the Central Division championship, but it was somewhat overshadowed. Already up 7-3 with just over four minutes to go, the unthinkable happened. With the Tigers net empty, the puck was dumped in by Medicine Hat and Hurricanes goaltender Stuart Skinner stopped the puck behind his net, looked down ice and sent a shot that rolled its way the distance of the ice and straight into the Tigers empty net. It marked the first time that a ‘Canes goaltender had ever scored a goal and just the seventh time in the history of the Western Hockey League that a netminder had accomplished the feat. The goal went viral on the internet and Twitter being picked up and played on TSN and Sportsnet as well as news outlets in England and Australia. Even the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon played the goal. The goal was also named the 2015-2016 Fan Choice Awards Play of the Year at the WHL Awards.
November 30th, 2007 – The Teddy Bear Toss has become an annual holiday tradition with teams in the Canadian Hockey League and the Lethbridge Hurricanes are no different. The 12th Annual Canadian Tire Teddy Bear Toss was a record-setting night for Lethbridge. A packed house of 5,202 fans launched 21,905 stuffed animals onto the ENMAX Centre ice when Colton Sceviour scored 2:24 into the first period, setting a new world record; the Hurricanes went on to win the hockey game 8-2 over the Saskatoon Blades. The record was short-lived, however, as the Calgary Hitmen broke the record two days later.
