Top 30 Moments - #2 Hurricanes Win Championship

April 30th, 1997 – After a terrific regular season that saw them finish first in the WHL with a 47-21-1 record, the Lethbridge Hurricanes entered the playoffs wanting to win it all, and that’s what they did. A first round sweep of the Prince Albert Raiders set up second round match up with the Moose Jaw Warriors. The Hurricanes and Warriors split the first four games, but the ‘Canes earned a 5-1 victory in Game 5 before winning the series with a 5-4 win in Moose Jaw. The ‘Canes then faced the Red Deer Rebels, dispatching them in five games to set up a WHL Finals date with the Seattle Thunderbirds. After outscoring the T-birds 14-4 in the first three games, the ‘Canes completed the sweep on April 30th with a 5-1 win in Seattle. Mike Josephson scored the eventual game winning goal 4:35 into the second period while Matt Demarski, Travis Brigley, Mark Smith and Darren Shakotko scored the others in the victory earning the Hurricanes their first, and only, WHL Championship.
