RAPID CITY, SD (Feb. 10) - Michal Stinil scored 24 seconds into overtime to help Wichita skate past Rapid City, 3-2, on Thursday morning at The Monument. Logan Fredericks and Garrett Schmitz each scored for the Thunder. Jake Theut claimed the win, making 32 saves. Fredericks got the Thunder on the board with six minutes left in the first. He intercepted a pass in the Rush zone, came down the left seam and beat Lukas Parik for his ninth of the season. In the second, Schmitz made it 2-0 as he redirected a shot from the blue line from van Riemsdyk for his fifth of the year. At 10:16, Fredericks was hauled down coming into the zone and was awarded a penalty shot. He came in on his strong side, but Parik cut the angle down, forced him across the front of the net and stopped the shot. Rapid City got back into the game in the third period as Stephen Baylis scored a pair of goals. His first came at 1:50 as he caught a pass coming in off the rush and beat Theut to make it 2-1. After a penalty expired on Cam Clarke, Baylis fired a shot from the left point at 14:44 that appeared to hit a Thunder player near the net and got past Theut. Time ran out and the two teams headed to overtime for the third time in the season-series. In the extra session, Clarke created a turnover at the Thunder line. He raced down the ice on a two-on-one, fed it across the slot to Stinil and he beat Parik for the game-winner. Wichita has won back-to-back games decided in overtime. Theut has wins in back-to-back starts. Fredericks has points in six-straight (2g, 5a). Stinil nets his first game-winner of his career, his first in overtime and extends his point-streak to four games (2g, 3a). van Riemsdyk finished with two helpers for the first time in his pro career. Dickman collected an assist, giving points in six-straight games (3g, 7a).
WICHITA, Kan. (Jan. 26) - Newfoundland scored three times in the first period and held down the Thunder offense in a 3-0 win on Wednesday night at INTRUST Bank Arena. Evan Buitenhuis made 39 saves in the losing effort. The Growlers didn't take long to jump out to a lead, scoring all three of their goals in the first. Ben Finkelstein scored at :21, intercepting a pass near the Thunder line and fired a shot past Buitenhuis for his third of the season. At 6:03, Newfoundland made it 2-0 with a shorthanded goal from Todd Skirving. Orrin Centazzo made it 3-0 at 17:07 when he walked off the right wall and fired a shot past Buitenhuis to the glove side for his 12th of the year. The Growlers were awarded six power plays, but the Thunder penalty kill held them off the board. Wichita was held to 19 shots on net, which ties a season-low for fewest shots on net in a game.
INDEPENDENCE, MO (Jan. 11) - Wichita scored twice in the second period and hung on for another 2-1 win against Kansas City on Tuesday night at Cable Dahmer Arena. Wichita has won back-to-back contests, 2-1, against Kansas City to close a five-game series against the Mavericks. Cam Clarke and Garrett Schmitz provided the offense and Jake Theut was outstanding in net, stopping 39 shots he faced. After a scoreless first, Clarke put the Thunder on the board with a highlight reel goal at 3:55 of the second. He skated up the right wing, juked around a defender at the right faceoff dot, came across the slot and put home a backhand for his second of the season. At 6:18, Jay Dickman found Schmitz across the slot and he buried a one-timer to make it 2-0. The Mavericks got back into the game at 10:17 of the third. Kansas City won a faceoff to the left of Theut. Justin Woods fed a pass across to Marcus Crawford and he fired a wrist shot through Theut on the power play for his sixth of the season. Carter Johnson and Brayden Watts did a terrific job of holding the puck in the offensive zone in the final minute of the game. Kansas City had one chance with 18 seconds left, but Theut made a long save. Dickman almost found an empty-net from the right wall in his own zone. The final horn sounded and the Thunder claimed the win. Six different players recorded points. Clarke has points in three-straight games. Schmitz has goals in back-to-back outings. David Thomson has assists in back-to-back contests. Dickman and Stefan Fournier collected assists in their first games back with the team.
INDEPENDENCE, MO (Dec. 31) - Darik Angeli scored back-to-back goals, including the game-tying and game-winning markers to help Kansas City knock off Wichita in overtime on New Year's Eve, 4-3, at Cable Dahmer Arena. Carter Johnson had a goal and an assist to lead the way for the Thunder while Garrett Schmitz and Billy Exell each scored. Ryan Harrison gave the Mavericks a 1-0 lead just 1:44 into the first. At 12:42, Exell tied the contest with a wrist shot from the left circle. Ben Johnson gave Kansas City a 2-1 advantage at 17:35. Carter Johnson tied it once again at 17:48 as he caught a pass through the slot and beat Angus Redmond. Schmitz gave Wichita is first lead of the contest with a power play goal at 10:39 of the second. He blasted a shot from the deep slot past Redmond for his first of the season. Angeli tied the game at 16:08 of the third. He put home a rebound after Jake Theut stopped Nick Pastujov. For the first time in the season-series, the two teams would head to overtime. Both teams had some good chances in the extra period, combining for seven shots. On one end, Dalton Skelly was stopped by Redmond and that led to the game-winner. Lane Scheidl caught a pass near the slot and his rebound slid under Theut from the goal line back into the crease. Angeli found the loose puck and scored his 11th of the year to give the Mavericks the win. Johnson collected his 10th of the year. Watts added his 20th helper of the season and extended his point-streak to five games. Skelly, Stinil, Fredericks and Hausinger all added assists. WICHITA, Kan. (Dec. 27) - Jack Doremus scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third period and Tulsa held off Wichita on Monday night, winning 3-2 at INTRUST Bank Arena. Sean Allen and Dalton Skelly each recorded goals for the Thunder. Evan Buitenhuis stopped 43 shots in the losing effort. Eddie Matsushima got the Oilers on the board first at 5:33 of the opening frame. He walked off the wall, received a pass from Carson Denomie and beat Buitenhuis to make it 1-0. Wichita didn't waste any time to get the game even early in the second. Allen scored his first of the season 13 seconds in to make it 1-1. He fired a shot from the left point that got past Daniel Mannella, Tulsa took a 34-18 shot advantage into the third period. Duggie Lagrone gave the Oilers a 2-1 advantage at 3:07 of the third. Alex Kromm created a turnover in the neutral zone and Lagrone put home a rebound off a chance from Carson Denomie. Skelly tied it just over a minute later with a shot from the slot with assists to Garrett Schmitz and Brady Fleurent. At 8:28, Jack Doremus gave Tulsa a 3-2 lead. He stole the puck from a Thunder defenseman and snuck home a backhand past Buitenhuis. With less than a minute left, Brayden Watts got in all alone on Mannella, but fired a wrist shot wide. Buitenhuis was lifted for the extra attacker just after his opportunity. Mannella stopped two more chances in the final seconds and gave the Oilers a 3-2 win. With the loss, the Thunder's winless skid hits 10 games. Watts has five points in his last three games. Skelly recorded his first ECHL goal of his career. Cam Clarke appeared in his 100th pro game of his career. Carter Johnson has points in three-straight (4 assists).
WICHITA, Kan. (Nov. 27) - Wichita and Rapid City played a high-scoring affair on Saturday night with the Thunder holding off the Rush, 6-4, at INTRUST Bank Arena. Logan Fredericks recorded his first ECHL goal that ended up being the game-winner and Brayden Watts tucked in an empty-netter to seal the game with 19 second remaining. Wichita hopped out to a two-goal lead in the first period. Matteo Gennaro gave the Thunder a 1-0 advantage at 4:45 on the power play. He made a terrific move along the goal line and beat David Tendeck for his seventh of the year. At 9:44, Jay Dickman made it 2-0 when he found a rebound off a shot from Carter Johnson that hit the cross bar and Dickman banged it home for his fifth of the year. Rapid City cut the lead to 2-1 when Max Coatta put home a rebound at 13:04 on the power play. In the second, Logan Nelson tied the game as he tipped in a shot from the blue line from Derek Perl at 4:08 and evened things at two. Alec Butcher gave Rapid City their first lead at 11:34 with his fifth of the year. Dean Stewart tied the game with his third of the season. He blasted one-timer from the right circle on the power play at 18:18. Peter Crinella gave the Thunder the lead for good at 5:03 of the third as he found a rebound near the crease with assists to Dickman and Peters. At 9:30, Fredericks made it 5-3 when he put home a pass from Brady Fleurent. The Rush answered quickly as Stephen Baylis scored just 20 seconds later to cut the lead to 5-4. Rapid City pulled David Tendeck and had an offensive zone faceoff with just under a minute left. Watts won a race for a loose puck after it was cleared from the Thunder end and he swept it into the empty goal for his fourth of the year to make it 6-4. Evan Buitenhuis has wins in six of his last seven starts. His only blemish was an overtime loss this past Wednesday night against the Rush. He also started his 14th consecutive game for the Thunder. Dickman, Watts, Gennaro and Crinella each had a goal and an assist. Tim Soderlund had two helpers. Dickman extended his point-streak to seven games. Gennaro and Stewart have goals in back-to-back contests.
INDEPENDENCE, MO (Nov. 9) - Ryan Harrison scored twice and Andrew Shortridge held the Thunder offense at bay in a 2-0 win for Kansas City on Tuesday night at Cable Dahmer Arena. Kansas City benefited from back-to-back five-on-three power plays in the third period to give the Mavericks some breathing room. Shortridge stopped all 27 shots he faced in the winning effort. The first period was fast-paced and saw Kansas City outshoot the Thunder 11-8. Wichita carried over a power play into the second when Loren Ulett was sent off for a cross check. Early in the second, Harrison gave the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. He skated up the right wing and snapped a shot past the blocker of Evan Buitenhuis. Andrew Shewfelt nearly tied it on a breakaway, but Shortridge made a tough leg-pad save to keep it a 1-0 contest. Wichita was forced to kill off back-to-back two-man advantage opportunities and the Mavericks finally cashed in. Sean Allen was called for high sticking at 8:57. Jay Dickman was then assessed a delay of game for closing his hand on the puck at 9:39. Wichita was about to kill off both power plays, but Carson Vance was sent off for a trip. Kasey Kulczycki was also called for a bench minor, giving the Mavericks another chance with a five-on-three. Harrison put home a rebound at 13:06 to make it 2-0. The Thunder pulled Buitenhuis with just over two minutes left and had some good pressure on Shortridge. He kicked aside four quality chances and held on for the win.
FORT WAYNE, IN (June 14) – Matthew Boudens scored 1:25 into overtime to give Fort Wayne a 4-3 win over Wichita in Game 5 on Monday night at Memorial Coliseum. Matteo Gennaro, Bobby McMann and Jay Dickman provided the offense while Alex Peters had two assists. Fort Wayne got on the board first just 2:12 into the game. Oliver Cooper skated behind the net and went for a wrap-around attempt. Evan Buitenhuis had his stick get caught in the traffic and Cooper beat him through the five hole to make it 1-0. McMann tied the game at 11:06 as he put home a rebound for his first of the postseason. In the second, Mathieu Brodeur gave Fort Wayne a 2-1 advantage at 7:24. The Komets won a faceoff and he fired a shot through traffic for his first of the series. Just 25 seconds later, Gennaro tied the game with his fourth of the postseason. He stole a puck near the Fort Wayne net and popped a shot through Dylan Ferguson to make it 2-2. The Komets regained the lead at 19:15 after Anthony Nellis scored a controversial goal for his third of the playoffs. He took the puck around the edge of the left circle, cut to the net and beat Buitenhuis as he ran him over in the crease. The goal was allowed to stand and no penalty was called on Nellis. Wichita tied the game again as Dickman registered his first of the series at 9:53 of the third. He caught a long outlet pass from Peters, took a shot and put home his own rebound to make it 3-3. The Komets appeared to take a 4-3 lead at 9:09 as Brodeur took a shot from the left point that beat Buitenhuis. The officials looked over the replay and determined that Nellis caught the left leg of Buitenhuis and the goal was disallowed. The Komets had one last opportunity at the end of regulation as Mathieu Gagnon was called for a cross check on Brandon Hawkins. The penalty carried over into overtime as the Thunder got through the first 1:07 of the man advantage. In overtime, Wichita was able to kill off the final 53 seconds of the power play and Gagnon came back on the ice. At 1:25, Boudens beat a Thunder defenseman in front of the crease and put home a backhand to give the Komets a 4-3 win.
