FORT WAYNE, IN (June 14) โ Matthew Boudens scored 1:25 into overtime to give Fort Wayne a 4-3 win over Wichita in Game 5 on Monday night at Memorial Coliseum. Matteo Gennaro, Bobby McMann and Jay Dickman provided the offense while Alex Peters had two assists. Fort Wayne got on the board first just 2:12 into the game. Oliver Cooper skated behind the net and went for a wrap-around attempt. Evan Buitenhuis had his stick get caught in the traffic and Cooper beat him through the five hole to make it 1-0. McMann tied the game at 11:06 as he put home a rebound for his first of the postseason. In the second, Mathieu Brodeur gave Fort Wayne a 2-1 advantage at 7:24. The Komets won a faceoff and he fired a shot through traffic for his first of the series. Just 25 seconds later, Gennaro tied the game with his fourth of the postseason. He stole a puck near the Fort Wayne net and popped a shot through Dylan Ferguson to make it 2-2. The Komets regained the lead at 19:15 after Anthony Nellis scored a controversial goal for his third of the playoffs. He took the puck around the edge of the left circle, cut to the net and beat Buitenhuis as he ran him over in the crease. The goal was allowed to stand and no penalty was called on Nellis. Wichita tied the game again as Dickman registered his first of the series at 9:53 of the third. He caught a long outlet pass from Peters, took a shot and put home his own rebound to make it 3-3. The Komets appeared to take a 4-3 lead at 9:09 as Brodeur took a shot from the left point that beat Buitenhuis. The officials looked over the replay and determined that Nellis caught the left leg of Buitenhuis and the goal was disallowed. The Komets had one last opportunity at the end of regulation as Mathieu Gagnon was called for a cross check on Brandon Hawkins. The penalty carried over into overtime as the Thunder got through the first 1:07 of the man advantage. In overtime, Wichita was able to kill off the final 53 seconds of the power play and Gagnon came back on the ice. At 1:25, Boudens beat a Thunder defenseman in front of the crease and put home a backhand to give the Komets a 4-3 win.

INDEPENDENCE, MO (Apr. 11) โ Wichita played its final game on the road this season and closed its season-series against Kansas City, losing 4-3 on Saturday night at Cable Dahmer Arena. Spencer Blackwell led the way with two goals while Matt Crasa connected for his 10th of the year. Connor Hasley suffered the loss, stopping 32 shots. The Mavericks dominated the opening frame in the shot department, leading 12-2 after the first. Tyler Schleppe opened the scoring at 18:09. Marcus Crawford won a battle below the goal line, fed a pass to the net-front and Schleppe put it through Hasley. Just 24 seconds into the second, Crasa tied the game. Kyle Jeffers slipped a pass to him in transition and he beat Dylan Wells from the left circle. Casey Carreau re-gained the lead at 2:19. He stole a pass near the left circle, found some room and beat Hasley for his 23rd of the year. Blackwell tied the game at 16:07 with his first of the night. Hasley made a beautiful save on one end after a turnover near the slot. Oliver Tarr went the other way, dropped a pass to Blackwell near the left faceoff dot and he beat Wells to make it 2-2. At 19:36, Jackson Jutting connected on a power play to make it 3-2. He found a void in the high slot and wired a shot past Hasley through traffic. Wichita tied the game at three with four seconds left in the frame. Cam Mitchell won a faceoff back to Blackwell and he fired it off the left post past Wells for his 12th of the season. David Cotton recorded the eventual game-winner just 26 seconds into the third. Wichita turned it over below the goal line. Carreau fired a pass into the blue paint. Cotton found a rebound and slipped it home for his 27th of the year. Wichita pulled Hasley with just under two minutes to go in the contest, but couldn't get the game tied and lost 4-3. Blackwell netted his second multi-goal game of the season. Crasa has points in back-to-back contests and became the seventh player with at least 10 goals. Jeffers has points in three-straight and points in six of his last seven outings. Wichita went 0-for-2 on the power play. Kansas City was 1-for-2 on the man advantage.

Kyle Jeffers and Peter Bates found the net in the losing effort. Roddy Ross suffered the loss, stopping 37 shots. Just 40 seconds into the game, Casey Carreau connected to make it 1-0. David Cotton stole the puck in the neutral zone, skated down on a two-on-one, fed it over to Carreau and he buried it for his 22nd of the year. At 10:38, Jackson Jutting redirected a point shot from James Marooney to make it 2-0. Wichita appeared to cut the lead to one with five minutes to go in the opening frame. During a net-front scramble, Spencer Blackwell slid home a loose puck. The officials got together to review the play. After looking at the video, the goal was waived off. In the second, Jeffers tallied his 10th of the year to put the Thunder on the board. Nick Nardecchia won a battle below the goal line and found Jeffers in the slot. After whiffing on the initial shot, he stayed with the play and beat Logan Terness. Tabor Heaslip scored with just nine seconds left in the second to make it 3-1. Jutting came around some traffic in the high slot and let a shot go towards the net. Heaslip redirected it past Ross and tallied his first goal as a pro. In the third, Lucas Sowder recorded his 14th of the year to make it 4-1. He intercepted a clearing attempt in the high slot and fired a shot past Ross. At 15:45, Bates connected for his 21st of the season to cut the lead to 4-2. He stole the puck near the Wichita line, skated down on a shorthanded breakaway and beat Terness through the five-hole. Ross was lifted for the extra attacker with just over two minutes remaining. Thomas Farrell fired a shot from the right corner and found an empty net to make it 5-2. Bates has goals in three straight. Jeffers has three points in his last two outings. Nardecchia recorded his first point since February 25. Wichita went 0-for-3 on the power play. Kansas City was 0-for-3 on the man advantage.

Both goalies settled in through the first 36 minutes of the game. Jack LaFontaine was tested with more grade-A chances, including a breakaway chance by Peter Bates. At 16:07 of the second, Bobo Carpenter broke the ice to give Kansas City a 1-0 lead. Lucas Sowder made a nice play coming down the left wing and fed a pass across the crease to Carpenter and he made it 1-0. In the third, the Mavericks put the game out of reach with two goals in 38 seconds. David Cotton fired a one-timer from the right circle at 5:29, collecting his 23rd of the season to make it 2-0. Sowder tallied his 13th of the campaign at 6:07 to make it 3-0. He charged down the right wing, had a step on a Thunder defender and beat Hasley to close the scoring. The Thunder losing skid hits five with the loss on Saturday night. LaFontaine earned his fourth shutout of the season and third against Wichita. Wichita went 0-for-1 on the power play. Kansas City didn't have a chance on the man advantage.
