Will we see the real Alexis? A lot has happened since Alexis Sanchez last played for United, back in November, but the Chilean looks hellbent on making his move to Manchester work. A year after tickling the ivories in that unveiling video. Sanchez has only scored four goals in a red shirt and knows he will have to drastically raise his game to have any chance of ousting the in-form Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial or Jesse Lingard. But the 30-year-old is looking in the mood ahead of potentially returning to the match-day squad on Wednesday. "I think he's looking forward to it. It certainly looked like it [on Saturday] in the session. He scored quite a few nice goals, so that was encouraging," Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told reporters. Banishing bad memories United head to Newcastle full of confidence but the players won't need any reminding about what happened the last time they rocked up at St James' Park in February. It would become a familiar theme in games United were expected to win in 2018 so this is a chance for Solskjaer to again make his mark. Who plays in defence? Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof seem certain to start this one but Solskjaer has a decision to make at left-sided centre-back and may yet decide to rotate his right-backs again. Eric Bailly will miss the next three games following his senseless red card against Bournemouth and Phil Jones will surely come back in to allow Lindelof to play on his natural right side and bring the ball out. Ashley Young, meanwhile, has played in two of Solskjaer's first three games but Diogo Dalot was left out of the squad altogether last time out and could be in line for a recall. Paul Pogba It was in this fixture last season where an ill Paul Pogba struggled to make his mark before being hooked midway through the second-half, but there is no stopping the Frenchman under Solskjaer. Pogba has been directly involved in more than half of the 12 goals United have scored since Solskjaer was appointed as the club's interim manager and Isaac Hayden and Mo Diame have a job on their hands to stop him making those dangerous late runs into the box. The clean sheet hunt goes on Solskjaer will have been blown away by some of the football his side have played in the last two weeks but there will be one nig
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have to make at least one change when Manchester United face Newcastle in the Premier League, and could be forced to make another as he goes in search of a fourth consecutive win. Eric Bailly's red card in United's victory over Bournemouth means Solskjaer will have to bring in a new defender, and Marcus Rashford could be available despite limping off against the Cherries. Solskjaer will also be boosted by the return of Alexis Sanchez, and will hope the Chilean can display a similar improvement in form to Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku. But whether Sanchez is used from the start is a decision that will probably depend on Rashford's fitness, while Lukaku will also hope to feature after a goalscoring cameo on Sunday. In defence, Ashley Young and Luke Shaw will continue at full-back, although Diogo Dalot will be pushing for a return after being dropped for the Bournemouth win. Victor Lindelof has been one of the stand-out players under Solskjaer and Phil Jones is the prime candidate to replace the suspended Bailly alongside him. Should Jones not be available for whatever reason, Solskjaer said he would use Matteo Darmian as a make-shift central defender as Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo are still not ready to return. In front of the defence, Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera have quickly formed an effective partnership in Solskajer's new-look formation. But after three games in eight days before the trip to the North East, the caretaker manager may look to one of Fred, Andreas Pereira or Marouane Fellaini to step in. Paul Pogba is in imperious form so it would be counter-productive to drop him, so if Sanchez was to start he would likely come in for Jesse Lingard or Anthony Martial. But after eight games out with a hamstring problem, it would surely be more beneficial to utilise Sanchez from the bench - just as Lukaku was used against Bournemouth. And Solskjaer's final decision is whether to risk Rashford in attack. The striker has started the last three games, but the return of Lukaku and his late goal against Bournemouth means the Belgian should come in for Rashford against Newcastle to see how he will fit into Solskjaer's side. With United looking so dangerous since Jose Mourinho's departure, Solksjaer should avoid making wholesale changes until the FA Cup game against Reading at the weekend. Predicted Man Utd starting XI: De Gea; Young, Jones, Lindelof, Shaw; Matic, Herrera; Lingard, Pogba, Martial; Lukaku. More Manchester United top stories
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's always had a special connection with United's youngsters. When the Norwegian was taking his first steps on the coaching ladder with the club's reserves, working alongside Warren Joyce, he was never afraid to tap into his own experience to guide his players. Solskjaer would often stop sessions to explain how he navigated a specific in-game scenario during his playing days. The players, who grew up watching the Norwegian on television, loved it. "Like something out of the Karate Kid" was how Mick Clegg, United's former power and development coach, put it. Solskjaer's always set out to fill his squads with young, hungry players and Sir Matt Busby's famous quote - 'If you're good enough, you're old enough' - has stuck with him throughout his coaching career. During the most turbulent period of his reign, Mourinho relied on players with vast Premier League experience. So much so that old favourite Scott McTominay rarely got a look in in 2018-19. Solskjaer has not needed long to give the club's youngsters hope again and believes there are 'top talents' in the under-18s who are already knocking on the door after being fed regular updates from Nicky Butt, Ricky Sbragia and Neil Ryan. Already, United's interim manager is sending the right message to the academy ahead of giving further minutes to youngsters in the coming months. "I think it's something that fans will demand, the club will demand, the owners and the board will demand and the manager as well," Butt told United's match-day programme before the win against Bournemouth. "The academy is the lifeblood of the club and the home-bred players are the ones that help the superstars all around the world embed themselves into our culture and become Manchester United people. "I think that's the most important thing." James Garner was among those who travelled with the squad to Cardiff for a league game, for the first time, while Angel Gomes got some minutes in the Boxing Day win against Huddersfield. Interestingly, those players who came through the academy - Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford- have been among United's star performers under Solskjaer. Players who remember what Solskjaer did for United as a player. Unsurprisingly, Pogba's resurgence has grabbed the headlines, given how he started just one of Mourinho's final five games in charge, b
And the Bluebirds boss says he even told his players ‘not to breathe’ on Manchester United's stars in their recent 5-1 defeat at Old Trafford. The Spurs clash will see Warnock’s defence pitted against the Premier League’s joint-top scorer Harry Kane. Kane was cautioned for simulation against Wolves in Spurs’ recent 3-1 loss at Wembley. And Warnock has warned his side to expect the same when they host Kane and Co. at the Cardiff City Stadium. **PREDICT FIVE RESULTS AND WIN £25,000 - FREE TO PLAY HERE** “It's so difficult to see diving, you can't blame referees,” he said. “I say to my players about the top players 'try not to breathe on them'. “I said that before the Manchester United game, if they get in the box ‘Don't breathe on them at all’ because they'll be down. That's how it is nowadays.” Diving has come under the microscope once again after three high-profile incidents over the festive period. As well as Kane seeing yellow for his antics, Liverpool's Mohamed Salah won soft penalties against Newcastle and Arsenal. Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg has urged officials to clamp down by dishing out more severe punishments and says the current rules are doing nothing to stamp it out. “If referee Michael Oliver had decided Salah dived against Arsenal, Salah would have received no punishment other than a caution,” he said. “But if the panel decided retrospectively that he dived, he would receive a ban. It’s flawed. The only way to kill diving is if the FA are strong. “People have said Salah did not dive against Newcastle on Boxing Day, so are we saying that contact was enough to knock him down? “What will happen when video technology comes in? Will they see that hand on his left arm and decide it is a spot-kick? “If a player has a chance of scoring, hitting the deck is not in his head. Look back at Sergio Aguero’s goal against QPR to win the title for Manchester City in 2012. “How many chances did he have to go down? He didn’t because all he wanted to do was score. “Salah was not likely to score from either of the positions he was in against Newcastle or Arsenal, and neither was Kane. “These are the incidents the FA should be trying to stamp out.”
Schmeichel saw the chopper come down and burst into flames outside the King Power Stadium after their game with West Ham on October 27. Five people were on board and there were no survivors. Schmeichel enjoyed an extremely close relationship with Srivaddhanaprabha, who led Leicester to a shock Premier League title in 2015/16. And the Dane says he can still remember every ‘horrifying’ detail of the incident in an emotional interview with Sky Sports. “Unfortunately, [I remember] everything. Every little detail,” he said. “I had family over from Denmark and I gave them a little look around the stadium and the pitch - the helicopter was always a big attraction. “We waved him off, waved him goodbye, and we kind of just watched him go up. “I’d seen him do it hundreds of times - it was a kind of ritual thing in the end. “You could just tell something was wrong, because it doesn't normally stand still like that. And what unfolded, unfolded. “I ran straight out of the tunnel and round to that side of the stadium. People over that side of the stadium hadn't seen what had gone on. “So I came sprinting out, shouting for people to call the police, one of our security guards saw me, ran after me. “We managed to get close - our security guard got closer than I did, and he [the security guard] tried to get in and do something. “But it was very evident from the heat that there was nothing anyone would be able to do. “And yeah - it was horrifying, horrible, to be that helpless.” Schmeichel credits Srivaddhanaprabha for his success and for turning his career around. Before moving to Leicester, the 32-year-old had failed to follow in his father Peter’s footsteps by breaking into the first team at Manchester City on a regular basis and had loan spells at clubs such as Darlington, Bury and Falkirk. “If you look back at my career, I've had to constantly prove myself and be compared to others,' Schmeichel added. “Constantly having to prove I am good enough. Then came a guy who said he believed in me from the first minute. “He said he'd seen me play and just gave me the platform. “I’ve been here nearly eight years now and that says a lot about the stability here and the belief he had in me. Having gone from nine clubs to just being at one club, I was searching for someone who believed in me - he and his family did. “It's very easy to be caught up in this world of money, fame and fortune. “He is a guy who has done all that and doesn't care about it. He only cares about helping people. “I think it just goes to show the impact he had and the kind of person he was. “He didn't need to buy a football club. A football club’s not a good business investment. “They lose money like you would;t believe. “He had a passion for the club, for Leicester, all that he did for the city - the hospitals, the donations. All these kind of things. “It was ownership done properly. If you're a fan of any club, that's the type of owner you want, the type of owner you dream of having.”
Hazard has constantly been linked with Real Madrid and hinted a move could be on the cards in the summer. Chelsea are trying to convince him to sign a new deal at the club but talks have stalled. **PREDICT FIVE RESULTS AND WIN £25,000 - FREE TO PLAY HERE** And now Hazard has claimed he will decide on his future in the summer after saying he wants to be a club legend. Asked whether that was a hint he will snub a move to Real Madrid and sign a new contract, Hazard said: "To be fair, I'm just focused on the pitch, and we'll see at the end of the season." Hazard, 27, has been sensational for Chelsea this term, scoring with 12 goals so far including two against Watford on Boxing Day. Hazard was one of the stars of the World Cup and has carried that form into Premier League action under Maurizio Sarri. "I'm scoring more goals, I don't feel I'm playing better, I'm just scoring more goals," he said. "I don't know why, maybe I'm just nearer to the goal. My position is winger. I feel better as a winger, but [against Watford] I did well as a striker, and against Brighton I did well as a striker. "The manager chooses where to put me on the pitch and then I try to do my best." Hazard is on Madrid’s radar though after their poor start to the season. Cristiano Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane left in the summer and it’s chaos since. Julien Lopetegui was sacked early on and replaced by Santiago Solari and they have crept up to fourth. But Hazard is seen as an option for them in January should Florentino Perez get his cheque book out. Hazard though has admitted he wants to become a club legend at Stamford Bridge after scoring his 100th and 101st goals for the club this week. ”It means a lot, especially because we also won," Hazard said, when speaking to Sky Sports about his milestone. "Scoring 101 goals with this amazing club is something I will never forget. “But now I think the fans, the staff, myself, the players, we want more. "I want to score more for this club and then try to be a legend like [Frank] Lampard, [John] Terry, [Didier] Drogba, I try to do my best.”
Ozil's future at the Emirates Stadium is up in the air after being left out of the squad in recent matches. The German was trusted with a starting spot against Brighton in an attacking formation that included Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. But after Jurgen Locadia cancelled out Aubameyang’s opening goal, Ozil did not re-enter the field for the second half. Emery was asked if the midfielder had an injury problem but he insisted the decision was tactical. “No, it's only tactical,” he said. “Because we changed from 4-4-2 and this is only a tactical decision. “Sometimes I change it tactically when I need something to change.” Arsenal crept above Chelsea into fourth place in the table with the draw, but that will change if the Blues pick up at least a point in the late kick-off against Watford. However, Emery was not happy with the two points that his side dropped. "We are disappointed but the first half is they key in the match,” he added. “We had two chances to score and the goalkeeper saved very well from Aubameyang. “We didn't concede many chances but they scored from one." "They are a very organised team. I think it's difficult to win here. “We wanted to control the match and in the first half we did this, but the second half we cannot do that. We are in our process, we want to be in the top four but we are continuing and improving."
Morata should be fit for Chelsea's Premier League trip to Watford on Boxing Day. But Express Sport expects him to start on the bench for the late kick-off at Vicarage Road. **PREDICT FIVE RESULTS AND WIN £25,000 - FREE TO PLAY HERE** The Spain striker has been struggling with a knee problem, but is back in full training and Blues boss Maurizio Sarri is hopeful he will be ready to take on the Hornets. "In this moment we have to think about us; only about our team," said Sarri. "The (Watford) match is difficult, we know very well. We have to study very well these kinds of opponents. "I think now the most important thing is our reaction after the match. "In the match the reaction was not in the right way. "Now we have to think about the reaction after the match, just in order to prepare in the right way the next match." Asked if Morata would be ready to face Watford, Sarri added: "I think so, I think he will be able to play." Andreas Christensen may miss out again with a hamstring injury. Sarri will show his Chelsea players a video nasty of their defeat to Leicester in a bid to eradicate a creeping error count. Chelsea lost 1-0 to Leicester in Saturday's Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge, leaving the fourth-placed Blues 11 points behind leaders Liverpool. "Of course, we will prepare a video about the match," said Sarri. "For every match we prepare a video after the match. We will prepare individual videos, the individual mistakes. "I want to speak with the group first of all, then I want to speak with three, four, five players. I don't know how many at the moment. "Of course we have to do everything just in order to avoid the same problem in the future." Asked if he had even less interest in Christmas now than before the Leicester defeat, Sarri added: "Yes. Of course, now I am interested in the 26th, not the 25th." Provisional squad: Kepa, Caballero, Rudiger, Alonso, Fabregas, Jorginho, Kante, Barkley, Hazard, Pedro, Loftus-Cheek, Kovacic, Giroud, Zappacosta, Willian, Cahill, Christensen, Azpilicueta, Morata, Luiz, Emerson Palmieri, Ampadu, Hudson-Odoi.
